Spelling!

I appreciate some people have dyslexia, SEN etc etc and this is not a dig at people with those problems but for the love of god, why can the majority of people not spell?!
It's not he's when you want to say his.
It's not discusting, it's disgusting.
If it belongs to them, it's their's, not there's
It's know if you know something and no if you're saying no to something.
It drives me fucking potty! We all have our strengths and weaknesses but these mistakes are constant on these threads.

I’ve just read a thread which is full of ‘gunna’. I’m gunna say this and I’m gunna do that. How do you even get that past autocorrect? My phone changed it about four times before accepting what’s what I wanted to write.

Piglet89 · 16/04/2020 11:54

@Blueuggboots you just can’t make a spelling error in a post complaining about others’ spelling and have them take you seriously.

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2020 12:03

And this ^^ smacks very much of "Oh you're alright, it's all the others".

People with dyslexia, SEN and EAL see these posts regularly on Mumsnet and how do you think it might make them feel?

I live in a deprived area where many women and children are suffering from all sorts of awful things that I think MN could really help them with.

But when I've recommended MN in my local FB group ( where quite a high number have SPAG issues), I've often been told they would never post here for fear of being pulled up and/or ridiculed, even by the apparently 'well meaning' posters who claim to just want to 'educate them' Hmm

Haffiana · 16/04/2020 12:08

The one that still makes me giggle was someone writing that they were not going to 'cow tail' to someone else. It took me a good while to work out what word they were trying to use.

The other one that I find odd is when posters say 'I was visibly upset'. 'Visibly upset' is surely not a description you can use in the first person unless you preface it with 'I was looking in the mirror and...'

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/04/2020 12:15

@Haffiana I must knowBlush "cow tail"?

EC22 · 16/04/2020 12:16

Their’s.
Absolutely brillliant self own.

Thighmageddon · 16/04/2020 12:17

Omg kowtow. For some inexplicable reason I knew immediately what it was and will look a right twat if I'm wrong Grin

Haffiana · 16/04/2020 12:17

Cow tail = Kowtow... Grin

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/04/2020 12:18

Thanks! I had to Google what kowtow is😂

costco · 16/04/2020 12:19

It drives me utterly insane. And the one that is the worst, as someone mentioned above, is "I should of gone" rather than "should have gone". As you say, if you see it written correctly many times, surely at some point you would work it out and start writing it correctly. Or even just apply some rational thought to it.... Anyway. I'm a judgemental, pedantic cow. Moo.

4amWitchingHour · 16/04/2020 12:23

I had an ex who would always use "myself" or "yourself" instead of "me" or "you" - I absolutely hated it. I think he thought it made him sound more fancy. In reality it made him sound like a twat.

EyeShipMiceElf · 16/04/2020 12:26

I’ve said a few times lately in conversations, “It’s a moo point” à la Joey

No one, no one has said anything! They ever think a) I’m correct, or
b) I’m thick as mince but are too polite to say

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/04/2020 12:27

Sometimes I can't make head or tail of posts on here. The misspelled words (I don't mean typos) and poor punctuation and grammar mean that I struggle. I have ASD, so in my head there are rules about writing that must be followed. I know the rules; since others have enjoyed the same education as I have, I reckon they must also know the rules. I spend far too much time rewriting poorly written posts in my head. Sometimes I genuinely can't tell what the poster is getting at.
I know a lot of dyslexic people and they generally try the hardest to be clear and concise in their writing, so it can't be that.
Nobody is infallible but I really don't think that spellcheckers can be blamed for absurdities such as 'aswel', 'alot', 'incase', 'should of' or 'he was been annoying'.
There, their, they're.

Port1aCastis · 16/04/2020 12:29

Oh dearie me
A cock up in the OP makes this very funny Grin

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/04/2020 12:31

@EyeShipMiceElf maybe they think you are doing a silent T? If you really want to know whether they would say something try using the popular version. Mute point...

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/04/2020 12:33

I am not trying to whip up some fight, but can someone explain to me why when talking about basic SPAG there is always the mention of people who have issues with it being from poorer part of population? Isn't there national curriculum at schools which has to be adhered to so everyone learns the same? As you can see, I didn't grow up in UK...

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2020 12:39

Of course it can.

Dyslexic people aren't all the same Confused

Thankgoodness1 · 16/04/2020 12:39

I hope OP has gone to her SRR (Self Righteousness Room) to self-flagellate for her ‘their’s’ spelling fuck up. Tut tut....Shock

Thankgoodness1 · 16/04/2020 12:42

Cosmos45

“Mine at the moment is "myself" instead of me or I. I got an email saying "if you would like to speak to myself about it than we can arrange a call" and it made me irrationally angry..”

YAASSSSSSSSSS BITCHWine

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2020 12:42

Generations of some poorer people didn't particularly have a great education themselves, as they were often too busy working as children/caring for siblings while parents tried to work. That can make it very difficult to help your children with their education.

Blueuggboots · 16/04/2020 12:49

@Piglet89, absolutely, hence me getting my coat a few posts further on!!! 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
Hollyhobbi · 16/04/2020 12:58

My mother got a letter yesterday advised her of: 'an phone call appointment' next week.

Hollyhobbi · 16/04/2020 12:58

ADVISING!!!

Carouselfish · 16/04/2020 13:03

Bought and brought mix up is a Midlands prob. Sigh. But also 'sat' when it should be sitting. You cannot have sat after the word was. It is not 'I was sat' anymore than it would be 'I was ran'. That's so widespread now though it's really really hard to combat.

MikeUniformMike · 16/04/2020 13:12

Why do people suggest that OP sees a councillor to help with getting over a broken heart?
