Would you be happy to send your primary aged dc back to school on 11th May?

Yes - YABU
No - YANBU

No - I have a few underlying health conditions that make me vulnerable. When new cases are negligible then I'll be happy to send him back but I think May is too soon and it will all kick off again.

It’s the date announced for schools reopening in France

this is not entirely true.

Latteaday123 · 16/04/2020 14:25

Every time I watch the news they always make a point of interviewing someone in hospital recovering from CV. They say things like "honestly, don't even go out and get that pint of milk, it's just not worth it". It then seems odd that on one hand we are given the message that it's super dangerous even to leave your house to get some shopping and then on the other hand it's fine to go back to work and put our children in school. Or perhaps im not understanding something.

SmileEachDay · 16/04/2020 14:25

No?

You mean that’s not the date for France or that’s not why The Sun has so enthusiastically jumped on that date?

Yes BUT only in the case of us returning to work... no point in sending DC when we are at home. There are no vulnerable people in our household and we are not in direct contact with anyone shielding either. So we would be able to test the water so to speak.

So do you think schools should open solely for childcare - no teaching needed?

HuntIdeas · 16/04/2020 14:41

If the government says it’s ok, of course I would. They’re the experts

FrippEnos · 16/04/2020 14:51

Because its not the whole story and it misses the part about a phased return, and no physical lessons till summer.

NB, I haven't read the scum so I haven't seen what twist that they put on this.

Ylvamoon · 16/04/2020 14:56

JemimaPuddleCat - that's one way of interpretation. Hmm

limpbizkit · 16/04/2020 14:58

Yep

SmileEachDay · 16/04/2020 15:37

Oh I see. Yes I know. I should’ve put quotes around “return”

showmewhatyougot · 16/04/2020 16:09

No way it will be over by then. There's no magical day this will disappear. It should only be done when the times right and safe for everyone.

user1000000000000000001 · 16/04/2020 16:11

My reception aged child is still in school near enough full time as it is. However I will be more nervous about it when there's a full school rather than 20 kids and 5 staff

JemimaPuddleCat · 16/04/2020 16:28

@Ylvamoon

So what is your suggestion? What about those still at home? Are they not entitled to the same level of education?

FailingMeansYouArePlaying · 16/04/2020 16:34

Nope

Ylvamoon · 16/04/2020 17:15

JemimaPuddleCat - it will be ad the parents discretion, obviously so you can decide on your own individual circumstances. My thoughts are that we will need to start somewhere, so why not start with families/ individuals that are not in the at risk group and see how things develop. Truth is nobody knows what is going to happen next. So everything is just speculation anyway. A way to pass the time, because the ones that make decisions are far to busy to spend time on MN.

Cecesea · 16/04/2020 17:20

Does it matter what anyone thinks? They are not reopening.

I say reopen the schools for the vast majority, continue to shield those who need to and don't penalise the vulnerable or hypocondriacs if they choose to continue self isolating.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 16/04/2020 17:30

Cecesea can you explain how you continue to shield extremely vulnerable parents whilst their children are expected to attend school. How do you open a school with 30% reduction in teachers - and still keep the 'social distancing' required in order to keep the teachers safe ?

Stellamboscha · 16/04/2020 17:35

hypocondriacs? You are clearly not a NHS worker are you. Most stupid comment I've read on here.

happyandsingle · 16/04/2020 17:40

Well it depends if teaching staff can come back. They have families some might be on the vulnerable list.
I dont think it's fair on the teaching staff tbh.

happyandsingle · 16/04/2020 17:41

I think it should be september for all nurseries/schools.

DysonFury · 16/04/2020 17:42

No but I am vulnerable and disabled and am loving lockdown (ask me again in three weeks Grin).

bokkleorandoove · 16/04/2020 17:47

No, I’ve been told that my county is about 3 weeks behind the national peak. Earliest, I would consider sending my 5 year old back is in June.
