That went out of date in December 2019?

It's Tuna Pasta Bake sauce in a jar, it doesn't contain any tuna it's basically creamy tomato sauce.

Smell it?

lgty · 15/04/2020 20:33

I don’t recommend using baking powder that’s 18 months out of date - cake ended up looking more like a biscuit and that was with a top and bottom and jam in the middle!!! 🥴

My husband had something out of a tin the other day with a best before date of 2005 Shock Personally I wouldn't have risked it. He says no risk. Tin sealed. He has thrown away a couple of tins bent out of shape and he always checks by taste and smell ext. Best before is different to use by Smile

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/04/2020 20:34

We ate a tin of pears expiry date 2015 and survived ok.

chocolatespiders · 15/04/2020 20:34

I had 2015 tinned sweetcorn yesterday and still here to tell the the tale!

wowbutter · 15/04/2020 20:35

I used a home pride one that went out of date in January 2019 and it was absolutely fine.

MrsSnitchnose · 15/04/2020 20:38

Meh, tinned and jarred stuff last practically forever anyway as long as they're not damaged. Give it a sniff, I'm sure it's fine

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/04/2020 20:39

I don't think it would even occur to me to check the best before date on a tin. I'd notice if the tin was dented or rusty, but that's about it. As far as I'm concerned time stands still for the contents once that tin is sealed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/04/2020 20:40

Ditto for jars, minus the bit about being dented or rusty! Grin

Genderwitched · 15/04/2020 20:40

We’ve been eating from the Brexit cupboard, a couple of jars a week for weeks, a good deal of it is a year to six months out of date, we’re fine! I don’t think I’m a very good prepper and forgot about rotating tins.

alibongo5 · 15/04/2020 20:44

We found an open bottle of Baileys from 2005. It was solid so even I decided that was too old!

Aesopfable · 15/04/2020 20:44

I am sure tins bst before dates have drastically shortened. Didn’t they used to last at least a decade?

nauticant · 15/04/2020 20:47

The way to tell if tinned tomatoes have gone off is to puncture the top of the tin and if the internal pressure doesn't paint your ceiling with tomato juice you should be fine (so long as they pass the smell test).

I know from experience that washing the ceiling is a pain the arse though.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/04/2020 20:49

Out of date tuna? 2018? I might leave it for the cat

Pickles89 · 15/04/2020 20:51

It'll be fine. I'm normally fussy about that kind of thing but since the virus and wanting to shop as little as possible I've been eating tins from the back of the cupboard, a couple of years out of date some of them, and nothing's happened. I just blast them for 4 minutes instead of 2 in the microwave in the hopes that that reduces any bacteria.

Lollygaggles · 15/04/2020 20:51

When we were little, Mum kept tins in the pantry. We often found stuff that was years and years old and if it didn't smell rank we ate it. Grin All lived to tell the tale!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/04/2020 21:01

I came onto this thread expecting some twat to be all

"What? You use jarred sauce? Why on earth would you buy a jar? Far too much sugar, I like to make my own from my own home grown tomatoes, sweat glands and lentils. You cretin"

You fuckers disappoint. I wanted a bun fight I tell you.

ContessaferJones · 15/04/2020 21:03

I ate cooked beetroot (in a sealed packet) that had a best before of September 2019. It was jolly nice thank you!

BreatheAndFocus · 15/04/2020 21:06

My first thought was botulism 😆

But I wouldn’t risk it anyway - even if the risk was tiny. I’m the opposite. I’m being more careful with food not less. I don’t want food poisoning necessitating a trip to the doctors/hospital at the moment.

And all those people saying they ate baked beans that were Best Before 2005 or whatever and survived - yes, but the people who ate the same beans but didnt survive wouldn’t be able to post to warn us, would they? 😱

Peregrina · 15/04/2020 21:22

Some things like dried herbs which are well out of date taste of nothing at all. It's just like adding a sprinkle of sawdust to your food.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 15/04/2020 21:22

We watched Inside the Factory and it's perfectly safe to eat tinned and jar food that's beyond best before.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 15/04/2020 21:23

But not dented tins - that's a no no

eeeyoresmiles · 15/04/2020 21:29

Dented out of date ones area no no? Or dented but well in date?

Smithtylater · 15/04/2020 21:59

Just a little sidenote...aldi tuna pasta bake in the jar is amazing.

Peregrina · 15/04/2020 22:04

I thought dented tins as long as the seal wasn't broken and they weren't rusting were OK? I am not 100% sure. The ones which definitely aren't are those bulging out.
