It looks like some kind of fuzzy triangle. Seems friendly!

Moth?

Mrsmorton · 15/04/2020 09:34

A humming bird bee or something named like that. They're cute.

Saisong · 15/04/2020 09:34

Bee fly. They are cute

TheNinjaWife · 15/04/2020 09:36

My guess would be some sort of moth? Humming-bird hawk moth would be my best guess. Hopefully an expert will be along soon. Smile

Mythica · 15/04/2020 09:37

Try a Google reverse image search.

RainbowDash101 · 15/04/2020 09:38

I think it’s a bee fly. We have had them in our garden as well. They collect nectar with the pointy thing. Harmless to us.

EvilPea · 15/04/2020 09:46

Another vote for Bee fly.

I don’t know where they’ve sprung from, but I’m sure they didn’t exist 10 years ago

Haggisfish · 15/04/2020 09:49

They did exist! It’s a bee fly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombylius_major

AdoptAdaptImprove · 15/04/2020 09:51

Definitely a bee fly. We saw the first one in our garden last year, and we’ve spotted them several times over the long weekend. Mind you, they might have been knocking around out there for years - we’re not usually home this much to notice!

Greenpop21 · 15/04/2020 09:53

UK?

Porcupineinwaiting · 15/04/2020 09:54

Bee fly. Good innit? Smile

💕 Thanks so much everyone! Nice to have a name for my new friend 😀 it’s either always hovering around me or there are a few of them.

Oh wow, so pleased for this thread 😁 we have loads of them and I’ve never seen them before. Their humming is so cute and they’re happy to come near me when I’m sat down enjoying the garden.

Love insects 😍

Ylfa · 15/04/2020 10:18

I’m in love too oily! 🥰 Mine give off very nice vibes 😀

Nanny0gg · 15/04/2020 10:19

They're still parasitic... :-(

TeddyIsaHe · 15/04/2020 10:21

Ooh I’ve had loads of these in the garden lately and wondered what they were.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 15/04/2020 10:22

Ha I’m so glad it’s not just me! I was actually delighted in the garden and said to husband ‘look at its proboscis’ and he looked at me like 👀

They’re so friendly aren’t they, I love their humming. I actually really love all insects which makes me the worst gardener ever because I can’t do weeding etc so I don’t disturb the woodlice 😁

BelleSausage · 15/04/2020 10:22

Bee fly! We have them too. Totally harmless.

NewYearNewTwatName · 15/04/2020 10:24

I love bee flies, they such a mismash.

EvilPea · 15/04/2020 12:54

I was going to say @Nanny0gg I have a vague recollection of them being parasitic to bee nests. Despite their cute fluffy appearance

MitziK · 15/04/2020 13:36

They flick their eggs into Bumblebee nests.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/04/2020 15:20

An abundance of beeflies is usually an indication that the bee population is in good nick

CocoCorona · 15/04/2020 15:23

Don’t know about the fly, but enjoy your strawberries when they’re ripe!

Ylfa · 16/04/2020 07:02

Thank you! 😋 🍓

Haha, I am similar, I apologise to all the insects I disturb and carefully relocate any snails or slugs I uncover when sweeping leaves etc.

I think it's a good thing though, the more wildlife there is the healthier the garden is, and apparently it doesn't reduce yields. I will find out how true that is in a few months, veg patch finally created.
