'our health and social care workers are well paid for what they do'.

AIBU to think as care minister she needs to acquaint herself with the pay scales.

She's a fucking idiot

TheTiaraManager · 15/04/2020 19:38

She came across as uncaring as well as having no idea what's going on

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 15/04/2020 19:46

Hm. If it's such a good wage for "what they do", will she be willing to have her pay reduced to match it then?

On the subject of them not being well informed, any of them, when they stand up in public or are interviewed on TV, that's what happens when you a) reduce the civil service and b) don't listen to the remaining civil servants and other public servants (like, you know, medical officers and scientists) trying to help you see sense.

I can't believe the lack of listening to civil servants is a coincidence, given that a certain adviser has slithered back into Number 10 this week - their disdain for the civil service oozes off them, even at a distance.

And since most of the ministers have little, if any, experience in the areas they're supposed to be representing, their lack of knowledge in those areas is hardly surprising. I'm not a fan of Piers Morgan by any means but I am finding at the moment he's one of the very few who is acting a bit like a journalist when faced with our so-called leaders by, you know, actually asking them questions. Of course it probably helps that he doesn't work for Pravda so his hands may well be less tied....

Loved the nematode worm comment. I might have to add it to my box of creative insultery!

RosesandIris · 15/04/2020 20:06

It should be mandatory for all MPs to spend at least one full week shadowing those who they claim to represent. How can they know anything about what they speak of when they have no direct experience.

changedmynameforlockdown · 15/04/2020 20:55

I studied with her - she has had a very privileged life and she has no insight into the real world, boarding school where her main interest was horse riding, then Westminster school, then Oxford (both following in her father's priviledged footsteps), then management consultancy, then politics. She certainly has never worked in minimum wage job and has no insight in how life is for the poorly paid.

I must say I was never fond if her, in case it's not clear

She's also not as young as she looks, she's 43, she just looks younger.

Devlesko · 15/04/2020 20:59

I'm wondering what else you expected from a Tory.
I've even heard suggestions that as Boris was so ill he'll see the value of the NHS and invest heavily.
Some people just don't seem to get the values of our different political parties.

Newyorkhereicome · 15/04/2020 21:18

She is someone who is so obviously out of her depth its almost painful to watch, she is completely clueless, regardless of your political stance I sure we can all agree that once this crisis is over we must ensure that morons like her are no longer elected to public office

Ilovemystarter · 15/04/2020 21:30

That interview was appalling. Her excuse for laughing was completely inadequate. She shouldn't have been laughing, giggling, sniggering, anyway - regardless of whether she could see the screen or not. An adult should be able to keep a straight face when talking about serious matters, regardless of any technical glitches.
I can barely believe that any party would be so desperate as to give a Ministerial post to someone so woefully incompetent and incapable and immature.

rwalker · 15/04/2020 21:38

The interview was a complete waste off a valuable opportunity to get and check facts.
Instead power mad piers just went off on one the woman couldn't even see what he was holding up then he accused her of laughing at it.
See was laughing at the situation He wouldn't let her see what he wanted her to comment on. Wouldn't let her talk shouted over her. He didn't ask a full question then shouted as soon as she opened her mouth .

ktp100 · 15/04/2020 21:42

How ignorant is that?!

I'll tell you how ignorant it is, it's a TORY MP level of ignorance!! These people don't know how we live, NOR DO THEY CARE.

Samtsirch · 15/04/2020 22:15

@Seriouslyastounded
“This is typical of the left “
🤣😂🤣
You poor poor thing.
No wonder you are.
🤣🤣🤣

JediJim · 16/04/2020 00:09

The interview was a car crash. Helen Whately came across poorly prepared, she could have atleast got her figures right as she surely knows what Piers Morgan is like.
She didn’t give a straight answer.
However, Piers Morgan came across as bullish and was very aggressive which probably threw her a little bit..
No wonder MPs avoid GMB if they know how PM will act.
As for PM quoting the Daily Mirror, would that be the same newspaper that published fake photos of British troops in Iraq that probably lead to more violence?
Oh and wasn’t that Piers Morgan who was responsible for that? Shame no one pulls him up on that on live tv..!! That would pull him down a peg or two ..!

Clavinova · 16/04/2020 09:34

Report on the vote referred to by Piers Morgan in the interview:

"On Wednesday [June 2017] , a Labour call to end the public sector pay cap was defeated in the House of Commons by 309 votes to 323."

"While 323 MPs voted against the amendment, a few in particular have been singled out for vitriol online."

"The Labour amendment said: “(MPs) respectfully regret that the Gracious Speech fails to end cuts to the police and the fire service; commend the response of the emergency services to the recent terrorist attacks and to the Grenfell Tower fire; call on the Government to recruit more police officers and fire-fighters; and further call on the Government to end the public sector pay cap and give the emergency and public services a fair pay rise.”

"[Heidi] Allen, who voted against the amendment, said that she couldn’t vote in favour because of “additional incorrect statements” it contained, particularly regarding the Grenfell Tower fire."

"Pls read the amendment- pretty obvs as says gov didn't recognise emergency services at Grenfell Tower tragedy! Totally untrue!"

"Allen described [Labour's] amendment as “too partisan”, and told the Huffington Post: “Public services includes the very highest paid chief executives, managers, Whitehall chiefs too."

“I cannot support a blanket pay rise to all of those."

“We need to focus on those public sector workers such as nurses, healthcare assistants and all those on the front line.”

"Tory MP Johnny Mercer described the vote as a political “game”.

“I think this is an attempt to vote down the Queen’s Speech to bring more instability when you need stability in the national interest,” he told the Plymouth Herald."

“I am interested in the results, and I will lobby hard to end the public sector pay cap. But we have got to get the Queen’s Speech through. I won’t vote with Labour.”

Mascotte · 16/04/2020 10:02

I loathe piers Morgan but someone has to try to hold these fuckwits to account.

Better than the usual sycophantic crap.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/04/2020 10:11

Why would anyone think the Tories had any grasp of real life? It wasn't so long ago that a Tory PM told a nurse she couldn't have a pay rise because there was no magic money tree.

Clavinova · 16/04/2020 10:24

GhostofFrankGrimes

You linked to June 2017.

March 2018:
"Unions to recommend 6.5% NHS pay rise."

"The pay deal for nurses, midwives, ambulance drivers, porters and other staff would put an end to a seven-year NHS wage cap."

"The Government offer announced by unions is for an increase of 3% in 2018-19, followed by rises of 2% in 2019-20 and 1% in 2020-21."

"The deal means every NHS worker will receive at least £8.93 an hour, 18p above the real living wage of £8.75, and take the lowest full-time pay rate to £17,460, an increase of £2,056."

news.sky.com/story/unions-to-recommend-6-5-nhs-pay-rise-11298838

That's not to say they don't deserve another pay rise or a bonus now.

1forsorrow · 16/04/2020 10:33

Better than the usual sycophantic crap. I think that is the crux of it, I don't know what has happened to the BBC, are they being bullied by the government or what. I don't like Piers Morgan, find him painful to watch and normally avoid but at the moment he seems the only one prepared to challenge govt ministers.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/04/2020 10:38

Clavinova, the Tories have treated public services appallingly they only act when their hand is forced. Lets not pretend pay rises are given out of the goodness of their hearts.
