'our health and social care workers are well paid for what they do'.

AIBU to think as care minister she needs to acquaint herself with the pay scales.

OP posts:
Interestedwoman · 15/04/2020 10:49

She didn't say that- you should either fact check or stop making things up. Other people in the thread should've fact checked too.

I'm not supporting her and don't know how much difference it makes, but if you put something in quotes you should quote it right.

How it actually went was she was asked:-

'Mr Morgan asked Ms Whately: "Next time there's a vote to lift the 1% cap on pay rises for health workers will you be voting for them to get more?"'

And replied:-

' "I will continue to support the Government in making sure that our health and social care workers are appropriately paid."'

As a Tory she's obviously not going to say a Tory policy is wrong- they hardly ever do, especially junior ones.

what this does is give them 'wiggle room.' Obviously we're going to be more broke than ever before after this Corona thing, but I expect they'll do something for health care workers as a public relations exercise. They might say they can't afford to do anything else, but lift the cap.

Get your facts right in future please.

Clavinova · 15/04/2020 10:58

Oh, yes - what she actually said is printed at the bottom of the link;

"What I want to see is our health and social care workers well paid for the work that they do."

NOT;
'our health and social care workers are well paid for what they do'.

MargotEmin · 15/04/2020 10:59

I have a niece who is not academically minded but is self motivated and hard working. She started working in a care home to tide herself over until deciding what she wants to do at college. It was gruelling, back breaking work.. lifting and moving elderly gentlemen sometimes 2 or 3 times her size, literally cleaning soiled bottoms after accidents. To her surprise she absolutely loved it and took pride in being the gritty girl on shift who would do the jobs none of the others wanted to. She even got an NVQ under her belt. She also loved the social element; the residents, the other carers, lots of camerarderie and good humour.

Sadly she has had to leave the sector as she just can't make a living out of it, not enough to stand on her own two feet anyway. It was all zero hour contracts, agencies cutting corners on her pay and conditions - she reckons the only carers who can make a living out of it long term tend to be the ones who have children so recieve top up benefits or are in a double income household.

She's a barmaid now, in a properly employed role where taxis are put on for the staff so no commuting costs. She would love to go back to social care but she's terrified of leaving the security of her bar job.

Tell me again that's it's well paid.

@gilead as others have just said and quoted she did not say that at all as I have said earlier in the thread. And even going back to watch it again you can't see the subtle difference in what was said???

Yes the answer she did give was politician waffle but she did not say they were well paid

user278654 · 15/04/2020 11:11

Have listened to it. It was a total car crash interview simple as that she needs to play it again on sounds and learn from her errors of judgment

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 15/04/2020 11:21

I used to manage a team of care workers and recruitment was a nightmare. The pay and conditions offered by the supermarkets were so much better, with less mandatory training and a lower emotional and physical burden.

How can we claim to value our old and vulnerable, if we don't value those caring for them?

1forsorrow · 15/04/2020 11:21

Personally I found the big smiles, grinning and sometimes laughing very inappropriate. That can't be blamed on Piers Morgan, she did it on Sky as well. I was watching it thinking, "What is she on, is she tipsy or what."

Runnerduck34 · 15/04/2020 11:26

I wonder if she'd do care work for the minimum wage?!?
Perhaps she should give it a go.

corythatwas · 15/04/2020 11:33

How could she be so reckless as to turn up to interview without even having checked some of the crucial death stats? And that's without even having to assume that she'd be …. errr…. kind of interested in it from a professional pov.

Also, in what usage of the English language does "I will continue to support the Government in making sure that our health and social care workers are appropriately paid" not mean "I have in the past supported and will in the future carry on supporting the Government in some kind of ongoing endeavour to make sure health and social care workers are appropriately paid"? And if there has not yet been any such endeavour, how does that not mean she is lying? The clue is in "continue".

If my dh were to go around telling everybody that he is supporting me in training for a charity Marathon and I have in fact no such intention of ever running a Marathon but am spending my leisure time watching Netflix, how would that not be lying? And how could he reasonably wriggle his way out of it by suggesting that I might actually take up training at some point in the future?

This government laughed and clapped when they voted down better pay for nurses. When it was revealed that nurses are having to resort to food banks they suggested in public that this was because they couldn't handle money. What have they done since that would make the Care Minister's claims of continuing to support them in ensuring appropriate pay true?

BeefyQueef · 15/04/2020 11:38

The mask slipped when she was laughing at the 4000 careworker deaths didn't it.

I mean we all knew the Tories wanted the poor to die, but they;ve managed to hide their glee about it until now.

Mistletorpor · 15/04/2020 11:40

This is just par for the course for Ms Whately. She is a parrot and will spout whatever the government policy is, depending on the way the wind is blowing this week. She’s an awful constituency MP too.

Jux · 15/04/2020 11:43

Inept.

fuckinghellthisshit · 15/04/2020 11:47

That interview was a fucking disgrace and I am raging. How dare she?

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 15/04/2020 11:54

Now I'm no fan of Piers.

However (( and it is grudging )) I'll give him this one.

Frozenfan2019 · 15/04/2020 11:57

How can we claim to value our old and vulnerable, if we don't value those caring for them?

Agree completely. This also applies to nursery carers, pre school teachers and teaching assistants (and to a lesser extent teachers whose pay is more reasonable but should be more imo) these jobs are crucial but the pay is shocking and expectations unreasonable.

Bluebellbike · 15/04/2020 11:58

I am a care worker in supported living.
I am on minimum wage. There is no payscale. The rate of pay increases only when the minimum wage goes up. Full -time pay is £16,087 per year.

As well as personal care and cooking of all meals the care staff are expected to arrange all social outings, review care plans, pay their bills, clean the house, do all laundry and shopping and ensure they receive the correct benefits.

Gilead · 15/04/2020 12:00

Interested Woman I watched the interview. Rewound and recorded what was said, unfortunately deleted when I had typed what she had said. And she did say it and I did get my facts right.

OP posts:
Seriouslyastounded · 15/04/2020 12:08

I can’t believe people are taking what you say as gospel, OP. This is typical of the left. Just jump in there spouting nonsense when they haven’t actually seen the interview.

SHE DIDN’T SAY THAT

I’m just typing it in capitals so it gets through because no doubt more posters will pile in saying how disgraceful it is.

timetest · 15/04/2020 12:09

She’s my MP. Sadly all a candidate has to do round here is wear a blue rosette. She’s woeful.

Frozenfan2019 · 15/04/2020 14:22

@seriouslyastounded you are getting very irate on at least two threads today. "The Left" is not some evil enemy with one mind, opinion and way of behaving. Plenty of us who are left wing read the news and follow politics,. plenty don't, it's the same on the right.

You completely destroy your argument by being so angry and aggressive. Do you really think you will convince anyone by portraying "the right" in the way you are doing?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 15/04/2020 14:27

It seems that she was thrown by not being able to see PM (normally a blessing) whilst he could see her. Thus she could not see the front page he was holding up, but you would expect her to do her homework and know what it said.

Sounds a bit of an ostrich: If I can't see you, you can't see me.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 15/04/2020 14:27

....and before any ostriches post, I know: You hold your head close to the ground to detect distant danger. But you do have tiny brains.

1forsorrow · 15/04/2020 15:26

It's a stage in child development isn't it? That's why they love peek a boo isn't it. If they can't see you then you aren't there. I'm sure someone can tell us what age it is, I think it is very much a baby thing and older children soon cotton on to the fact you are still there.

corythatwas · 15/04/2020 16:43

I am just totally thrown by the Care Minister being so totally uninterested in her job that she doesn't look up the latest figures of deaths in different categories before she sets of for an interview. She insisted on talking about the figures of 3 April- does she actually WANT to advertise that the government is 2 weeks behind in this crisis?
