My gut feel is no as it's uneccesary journey but....

The roads are quieter and i desperately need to learn to drive for career progression?

Still a no though? I think no but the thought just occurred to me

No, I suppose you could drive to the supermarket with your DP if you’re advanced enough learner but no more.
I saw on daily walks how quite a few cars were going over speed limit, probably hoping that the roads are empty so it’s might be even more dangerous in some places.

When you're learning just getting to grips with the mechanics of driving, manoeuvring, etc are really important. Practising on those essential journeys would still be beneficial

I don't see how. When you pass your test, you need to be able to do manoeuvres in normal driving conditions. Practising them on empty roads is of such limited value that I can't see how it could be justified right now.

No. Ffs.

SpanishFly · 15/04/2020 11:26

@TheLowry bending the rules to suit yourself is not ok. No journeys that are non essential. No ifs, no buts. I'm pretty sure there would be 100 reasons why your justifications dont make sense, but the obvious one is that a learner driver is more likely to bump the car or cause an accident, and therefore need emergency services of some form, or a tow truck. etc.

Driving in clear conditions is just as important as driving in traffic. Examiners won't usually have you doing a manoeuvre in very heavy traffic anyway.

Those who think learners are a higher risk, a counterargument is that your insurance will nearly always go up when you pass your test! The stats show that newly qualified drivers (allowed to drive alone) are higher risk than learners (driving only with supervision).

SarahAndQuack · 15/04/2020 12:19

That is true, but this isn't 'clear conditions'.

This is a pandemic.

There are very, very few cars on the roads.

It's not a sensible or useful time to try to learn to drive.

Totally depends on circumstances, dd has friends in the forces that have been suggested that they use the leave to get their licences if they haven't already, they are on standby to help out with logistics etc so being able to drive is important. Driving lessons can be taken in these circumstances and (some) test centres are open
