My gut feel is no as it's uneccesary journey but....

The roads are quieter and i desperately need to learn to drive for career progression?

Still a no though? I think no but the thought just occurred to me

OP posts:
kingofkings · 14/04/2020 22:53

Definitely no

jojobar · 14/04/2020 22:54

Following on from the 'you're only allowed out for an hour of exercise' (nonsense but LOADS of people are convinced it's true) there are also people putting about the idea that if you're on a non essential journey you're not covered by insurance.

This is not true?

jojobar · 14/04/2020 22:55

Sorry that should have been an exclamation mark not a bloody question mark Blush

Nay.
Not essential
2 people from different households mixing then going home to their respective families. If God forbid there was an accident could be another car so 4 people ± maybe police x 2 + Ambulance at least x 2 at least 8 people at risk going yo families. Just wait.

Procrastination4 · 14/04/2020 22:56

Apart from the fact that the “journeys” would be unessential, how would social distancing work in a car? The risk of contracting the virus is far, far too high and I’m sure no reputable instructor is offering driving lessons in the current climate.

LovingLola · 14/04/2020 22:57

It said in the paper today that insurance could refuse to pay for non essential travel during lockdown, so if you do go out be very careful

Can you provide a link please.

Hunnybears · 14/04/2020 23:03

agree with everyone else and a big fat no. Also worth noting that whilst it might be ideal to practice on a quiet road, that’s not real driving.

Real driving is having to concentrate on what your doing and everyone else in your vicinity. Anticipating what they may do etc... it’s a world away from driving on empty roads so probably won’t be a huge benefit

RichPetunia · 14/04/2020 23:04

No, but I have seen one or two out and about.

Enough4me · 14/04/2020 23:05

No

oknowimscared · 14/04/2020 23:16

Obviously it’s a no. Round here the roads are quiet, but of the cars that are out and about, a lot of them are driving like total idiots. Combine that with a lot more pedestrians having to step into the road to avoid other people walking the same routes - I’d like to know how many accidents there has been.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/04/2020 23:19

Do you have any driving experience OP?

In general the answer has to be no. However, if you've had lessons and need to keep your hand in then there wouldn't be any harm in you driving for any essential journeys with DP as your instructor.

LovingLola · 14/04/2020 23:22

@Furloughrefusedconfused
The same reporter for the same paper writes on April 10th that ABI refutes that statement.

safariboot · 14/04/2020 23:24

Professional lessons won't be available.

IMHO private practice is OK if the journey is necessary and you are already a good enough driver. And the supervising driver is from the same household of course.

In Birmingham I'd say I've seen less bad driving than usual, not more. But other areas and times of day may be different.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 14/04/2020 23:25

The country's in lockdown, so unless you're planning on driving around your living room, it's a NO. Stay at Home.

MillicentMartha · 14/04/2020 23:39

No. DS was due to do his driving test on Friday but it was cancelled by the centre and he’s had no lessons since mid March.

123movies · 14/04/2020 23:41

I suggest that if you have the opportunity to do it in a safe place, you can practice it without problems. For emergency it is necessary. I'm also afraid to do it, but since I don't have a car, I don't, so let's get excited to do it!

TheLowry · 14/04/2020 23:43

My DH is teaching our son's girlfriend who is staying with us during the lockdown. They drive locally within walking distance of the house, don't get out of the car so no contact with anyone. A lot less risky than going to a supermarket or a walk in the park.

DogInATent · 14/04/2020 23:47

There's at least one professional motorcycle instructor still providing lessons locally, although that's far more socially-distanced than being in the same car.

You could use the time to study for the theory test and get ahead on that part of things.

Cissyandflora · 14/04/2020 23:51

And it’s a nay from me

CoupeCourte · 14/04/2020 23:57

I'm in Victoria (Australia) where a learner driver getting a lesson from her mum got whacked with a $1600 fine. The police have since withdrawn it and have clarified that learner drivers can get lessons if combined with essential travel - so driving to the supermarket, for example.

CrocodilesCry · 15/04/2020 00:00

@TheLowry What is it exactly that makes it ok for your family to break the rules? It’s a non-essential journey and they could legitimately be fined if they are stopped by the police.

SnowsInWater · 15/04/2020 00:03

We are in NSW Australia and it would be allowed here. In the state of Victoria it isn't allowed. Check what the rules are where you are then make your own decision, MN is a truly horrible place at the moment with everyone so happy to jump down everyone's throat. I wonder if they are as nasty in real life when they can't hide behind a keyboard.

peachesandclean · 15/04/2020 00:10
