Please don't fly Chinese lanterns for the nhs

People are now talking about flying Chinese lanterns to show respect for the NHS each week.

Please don't do this. They start wildfires, they cause distress to animals, and they cause more litter. One horse was actually set on fire because of them and got severe burns to its face. Sad

Please don't do this. There is enough going on without causing fires and harm to wildlife. Clap all you want, sing etc just not this.

How are these still legalConfused

isabellerossignol · 14/04/2020 18:51

I wish these were banned. And balloon releases too, although obviously the Chinese lanterns are more problematic.

AvalancheKit · 14/04/2020 18:52

YANBU to want to ban what is in effect just litter.

But YABU to call them Chinese just because they come from Chi-naaaa

Honestly I didn't know what else to call them so that people would know what I was talking about.

Eh? People call them chinese lanterns because of the lantern festival in actual china, surely?

TheHumanSatsuma · 14/04/2020 18:57

I saw the original tweet on Twitter, utterly stupid.
It was tweeted by a company that makes them and is charging £6 each.

Blatant, irresponsible profiteering.
I agree, please don’t do it.
They cause damage to wildlife and, especially after this very dry weather, likely to cause a lot more work for emergency staff, Fire services around the country have asked people not to do this.

Whoever thought this marketing stunt up needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

HappyHammy · 14/04/2020 18:57

Please dont light them

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/04/2020 18:58

I thought that Chinese lanterns was the name for any lantern of this type, because the design originated in China, in the 3rd century BC, as a military signalling device, and became something that was used in festivals in China and in other countries - not because all such lanterns are currently only made in China, @AvalancheKit.

Sky lanterns

AvalancheKit · 14/04/2020 18:59

Oh ffs........

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/04/2020 19:01

muckycat · 14/04/2020 19:03

Bloody hell, is this the latest thing?! Why are these still available?

Please do not join in, the last thing our emergency services need is a load of extra fires to contend with. Farmers also could do without losing crops and livestock.

Potentially it could even mean burns victims for the NHS to treat. Great way of saying thank you!

PicsInRed · 14/04/2020 19:08

Ffs, really? No.

The post I saw about it had about 1.1k reactions to it, and almost all of those were angry faces. I hope that's indicative of the general population's thoughts on these by now.

TemoraryUsername · 14/04/2020 19:11

I've only seen people and posts saying please don't do it, so hopefully the message is getting through.

Setting a ball of fire loose to float somewhere you have no control over - what could possibly go wrong?!!

Seriously though - whatever the occasion please just don't set balls of fire loose. Buildings have been burnt down from these, livestock burnt and wildlife get caught in the rubbish left at the end of it.

I used to work in a hotel which did weddings on top of a hill - it was quite common for wedding parties to want to light and float these darn things. You should know that if nothing else, rarely is it the right ambient temperature/weather/humidity/gentle breeze in the uk for these things to actually do any more than to flop sadly to the ground just out of your property. All your romantic ideas of them floating across the sky - it just rarely happens.

SomethingOnce · 14/04/2020 19:11

Not just any litter, burning litter.

SquishySquirmy · 14/04/2020 19:12

I am shocked this even needs to be said!
😮

ChocolateDove · 14/04/2020 19:26

I hope so, but I know some don't have fb so figured posting it might be helpful.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 19:26

There's no good reason for these things to exist. Anyone fool enough to light one, and their manufactures and distributors, ought to be liable for any damage and injury caused by them. I'm not much into banning things, but I'd ban 'sky lanterns'.

Pelleas · 14/04/2020 19:27

I agree - and please don't substitute helium balloons because they're also ruinous for wildlife.

Fluffybutter · 14/04/2020 19:29

There was a thread on this earlier today about a company using this to tout for business

MinorArcana · 14/04/2020 19:32

YANBU, this sounds dangerous.

We’re sticking with the weekly clapping here.

Notenoughchocolateomg · 14/04/2020 19:40

Lmao at AvalancheKit god, what a horrendous man he is. On topic, I couldn't agree non-Chinese lanterns and releasing balloons needs to be made illegal.
