AIBU to think people should not smoke/vape in queue?

So the queue at Supermarket is quite a long snaking queue but people are smoking and vaping and I have to stand there and just accept it? I complained to the store and every little did not help as they said it’s in the car park. I’m stood 2m away with someone’s second hand vape billowing across - surely smoking in the queue should be stopped?

This doesn't happen at Waitrose

It did last Thursday when a Sainsburys customer couldn’t get into Sainsburys and came to Waitrose!

It’s pretty rank but unfortunately smokers don’t realise that. PMSL at the comment ‘wear a mask’ - yeah right cos that’s gonna stop the smell isn’t it doh?

not being unreasonable - I dont like smoking anyway, the smell makes me retch but aside from that, especially now, you'd hope people could restrain themselves for half an hour or have one before joining the que. unfortunately, people will continue to do so as they are allowed to in an open space

Lots of supermarkets don't own their car park. It isn't their property to dictate what people can do on unfortunately. It's disgusting and people shouldn't do it obviously but complaining to the supermarket won't get you far

I’m not a smoker but I imagine smokers, like most people, are more anxious than usual these days and therefore more likely to feel the need for nicotine.

I don’t like the smell of smoke but one or two people smoking in a queue, a minimum of two metres away from me, is not going to make much difference to my life. I’d guess that most non-smokers are exposed to less second hand smoke than usual these days, unless they live with someone who smokes indoors.

OP, do you complain about the smell near factories then or In other areas with high levels of pollutants

YANBU smoking where it will get to other people is fucking selfish.
If you choose to fuck up your lungs, crack on. But go and stand away from people who like their air good and non toxic.

I vape, i exhale the same amount whether there is vape in it or not. (I just checked that).

You are breathing in, whatever it is I breath out - the difference is with a vape, you can see it, and it smells like sweeties.

Maybe this will make it clear that 2 metres is not NEARLY far enough away to be avoiding breathing in airbourne virus?

(Put down the pitchforks people, douse your torches, I am self isolating for 12 weeks as vulnerable and haven't left my house in 3 weeks, it isn't me vaping in your queue.)

YANBU - stuck in the queue, with nowhere to go (of course you can't go further away otherwise you lose your place), it's so selfish and smells absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the fact that it's not just when you're in the queue - cigarette smoke sticks in hair and clothes so when I got home the other day after having to stand behind someone who was smoking all the way down the queue, I could still smell the smoke on me! Absolutely horrible.

God no, it's extremely selfish to stand smoking or vaping when you know others have to stand there inhaling it. I think it's a bid ridiculous actually that they can't wait half an hour or so until they're away from people.

Yes it should be banned by the supermarkets as other public places have banned it, and you don't have a choice in avoiding it when you're shopping.

I do vape but it's a luxury for me not my right to waft clouds of smoke over other people. This really annoys me in general.

@Howfar12 I would choose not to live there probably - and if they are not directly blowing in my face when stood downwind then I could put up with factories.

@BabyDues00n88 not yet it’s not but surely as soon as they have made the slalom lanes part of the shopping experience then it stands to reason that this is where the ‘shop’ begins and thus no longer a public space - a bit like school playgrounds?

It’s hardly pearly clutching to state the fact that smoking and vaping is pretty fucking rank. It’s not illegal to smoke in those queues so there’s not a lot you can do OP - other than be glad you’ve got more sense than to chuck money at fags and vapes- it doesn’t come cheap

Totally agree! Smoking and vaping is gross but even worse in today's current environment

I think the point the OP is trying to make is that the virus is airborne and vaping blows particles from your mouth/lungs more than 2m away. My husband won't vape outside a shop for that reason.
