I feel quite uncultured when it comes to films as I usually stick to the same cheesy rom coms Blush. With the lockdown I have a lot of spare time so I thought it would be good to finally branch out a bit and watch some of those must see films that are often talked about and so I would love recommendations for films you think are must see or films that have resonated and stuck with you over time.

Thank you!

Margin Call (loosely based on Goldman Sachs during the 2008 financial crisis). It has a couple of weird dead end bits of story, but is a fascinating look at the ruthlessness of derivatives trading.

Grosse Point Blank. Because John Cusack......

Midnight in Paris (for anyone who ever romanticised about being a writer in 1930s Paris)

Don’t let Owen Wilson put you off. Worth it for the Hemingway actor and Adrienne Brody as Dali ‘I see a rhinoceros’

Was going to come and put my top films and see a lot of them have been mentioned! My fave films are:

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Funny face
Roman holiday
Stand by me
Napoleon dynamite
The breakfast club
Sixteen candles
Pretty in pink
Weird science (I think this is one of the funniest films ever)
and I’m a big John Hughes fan as you can see!
Grosse point blank (John cusack one of my favourite actors)
Rear window (agree with a pp - any Hitchcock is good)
Speed (I know it’s cheesy but I love it and what can I say, it’s Keanu at his most Gorgeous)
Mystic pizza (vintage Julia Roberts)
Practical magic (I love this film, Sandra bullock and Nicole Kidman are great together and the set is beautiful)
An education (Carey mulligan won an Oscar for this and it’s a lovely film)
Also any national lampoons film (except the most recent one which was a bit too gross for my liking!)

God, loads more too...

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 16/04/2020 00:07

Agree with Get Out, The Talented Mr Ripley and Leon too - all modern classics.

Vinotinto78 · 16/04/2020 00:11

Heathers
The Hateful Eight
The Shining
In the Name of the Father
Airplane
Gran Torino
Little Shop of Horrors

Vinotinto78 · 16/04/2020 00:13

Oh, and The Craft.

MrsSnitchnose · 16/04/2020 00:18

I don't really like films but Shawshank is my absolute favourite!

As no one has said it yet, I'd like to add in Fight Club (usually can't stand Brad Pitt, but Edward Norton makes up for it Grin)

Also Solace was brilliant (Colin Farrell 😍)

5LeafPenguin · 16/04/2020 00:25

Kind hearts and coronets
My cousin Vinny
The Martian

OVienna · 16/04/2020 07:39

Ones not already mentioned:

North by Northwest
Witness
Seven
Cape Fear (I saw a modern version, there is an older one too.)
The Innocents

I also like the Sense & Sensibility with Dan Stevens. Despite these suspense films I love feel good period drama stuff.

Gaslight
Social Network

Glad to see someone mentioned Margin Call.

notforonesecond · 16/04/2020 08:37

In case you’re like me and don’t always want to watch something too “high brow” here are my favourites:

Empire Records
10 Things I Hate About You
Independence Day
Jurassic Park
Speed
Fly Away Home

Ratonastick · 16/04/2020 08:50

Just thought of another one. The Death of Stalin. It’s odd, but a very satire about the power plays in the Soviet Union. And Jason Isaacs finest hour!

Ginormarse · 16/04/2020 09:00

We have recently watched Bait (Black and white film set in Cornish fishing village).
Donnie Darko
Napoleon Dynamite
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Event Horizon
Millions
When a Monster calls
Any Wes Anderson film
Ghost busters
Evil Dead
Sound of the Sea
No Country for Old Men,
There are loads more..

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 16/04/2020 09:09

Breakfast Club.
Princess Bride
Wolf of Wall Street
American Gangster
All the Avengers
Three Billboards...

Oh and A Monster Calls even though I cried SO MUCH my face was swollen. It is the truest film I have ever seen.
