I feel quite uncultured when it comes to films as I usually stick to the same cheesy rom coms Blush. With the lockdown I have a lot of spare time so I thought it would be good to finally branch out a bit and watch some of those must see films that are often talked about and so I would love recommendations for films you think are must see or films that have resonated and stuck with you over time.

Thank you!

Holidayaddict · 14/04/2020 23:39

Watched Gone Girl the other night on Netflix - would recommend

Graphista · 15/04/2020 00:16

Seconding Betty blue - beautiful film if difficult watch.

Gone with the wind
Casablanca
In a lonely place (yes I’ve a soft spot for bogey)
All about Eve
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Roman holiday

Charade
Imitation of life
Madam x
Blackboard jungle
The colour purple
American history x
Erin brockovich

Goodfellas

All the presidents men

Milk - fantastic film!
Fruitvale station - if I could I’d make every American watch this.

Terms of endearment
Rear window - in fact as many Hitchcock as you can!
Good will hunting
What dreams may come (though must admit I’ve not been able to watch since robin williams died)
The third man - but you must concentrate for this one no playing on your phone or knitting
Fargo - just genius! So much so I’m ridiculously reluctant to try the tv series
Shallow grave - if dark humour is your thing
A life less ordinary - a lesser known film but just extraordinary
Enemy of the state - seemed sensationalist at the time...now with Siri & Alexa, wiki leaks and Cambridge analytica? Scarily accurate!
The apartment
Interview with the vampire - I went as a huge Tom cruise fan (yea I know he’s hated on here!) but was seriously impressed with Antonio banderas in it too, and Kirsten Dunst blows you away even as a child actress.

12 years a slave
Green book
Hidden figures
Capote

Wild
I, Tonya
Selma
The help
Double indemnity

The green mile - without a shadow of a doubt, one of THE best films ever made.
The colour purple. I forgot about how amazing it was

Goodfellas
Casino
Pretty much any movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in is bound to be good.

JayDot500 · 15/04/2020 07:45

PositiveVibez I loved Blades of Glory too.

TheVanguardSix · 15/04/2020 13:00

The LIves of Others has been mentioned. That's a beautiful film.

I came back to add Sideways! That's a gem of a film. It's moving, it's hilarious, it's just a great film. 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a good'un.

And I'll mention Moonlight again. That's one of the best films I've seen in years.

Whatevah · 15/04/2020 13:03

Life Is Beautiful
Don’t let subtitles put you off, it’s the most wonderful film.

TheVanguardSix · 15/04/2020 13:05

Also A Streetcar Named Desire
