Keeping stuff for the charity shop!

Shiningbright9729 · 14/04/2020 09:22

Having a sort and have a couple large bags of stuff I don’t need but is in great condition so want to donate to a charity shop once all this is over (whenever that will be). There is one charity very close to my heart. I’ve put it in a safe place but oh is annoyed saying just to bin it because it’ll be in the way for a while and charity shops won’t even want second hand things now. (I’m thinking they’ll be happy for donated items once this is over surely). My items aren’t exactly covered in covid..

Aibu to want to keep it all and wait? It’s stuff that is in excellent condition. Some items like new!

Keep it and wait. Store it under the stairs just now.

Appiandterri · 14/04/2020 09:24

It would be awful to just bin it.
I’ve got a full bag, I will donate it when all this is over.

Fairyliz · 14/04/2020 09:25

I volunteer in a charity shop, we definitely will want it when this is over especially if it’s in good condition.

grafittiartist · 14/04/2020 09:25

Same problem here. It's all in the car boot ready for when they open again.

Just hide them and tell him you've chucked it all!

Yes it’s inconvenient but find a dry place to store it for a while. It won’t be forever. I’m in the same boat. Lots of stuff too good to bin but nowhere to dump it temporarily.

perniciousdot · 14/04/2020 09:31

We have had a mass clear out and I have loads of stuff for the chart shops. I'm keeping it, my only concerning that they might restrict donations when they open because they could get overwhelmed. I will hang on to it as long as I need to though. There is no reason not to.

Chanel05 · 14/04/2020 09:33

Yes it'll be in the way but definitely don't just bin it. I have three huge bin liners of clothes I've sorted through in great condition that I'm keeping until the shops reopen. Think of the profit the charity will make from your donation :).

Oldsu · 14/04/2020 09:36

My Husband runs 2 charity shops and like other posters has found that idiots have already left donations outside of one of his shops, if you want to do this may I remind you of a 2010 high court ruling which means that until the shop takes them in those 'donations' still belong to you, if you put these outside the shop even in a doorway without the charities permission you are guilty of fly-tipping and you are responsible for any clear up costs if your stuff ends up being strewn across the street. Also remember that when the shops are open again they may be short staffed unless they can get all their volunteers back so please don't try to donate about 20 black bags of goods 5 minutes after a shop has opened for the first time in what maybe 6 weeks especially if its winter stock that has to be stored

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 14/04/2020 09:37

Some of the hospitals near me have been asking for clean, loose, easy clothing for patients (whose families can’t visit them).

Shiningbright9729 · 14/04/2020 09:40

Thanks all. I will keep it all. Some items are new. DS was given gifts for Christmas he hasn’t looked at.. he has very particular interests! I don’t donate things unless I would bug them myself 😄lots of books that are as new as oh buys them and never reads them 😩

@TestingTestingWonTooFree great idea. I haven’t got many clothes to donate right now but I’ll beat that in mind.

@Oldsu a charity shop close to me has had that problem. Lots of bags left outside. Infuriating isn’t it? There’s a sign on the door not to and they still did it. I can assure you I won’t be doing that. 😊

Do you have a car? If so, put the stuff in the boot?

I'm keeping a lot of bits I have for the tip in my car (small electronics, old lightbulbs etc so nothing that's going to get dirty or smelly) so it's not cluttering up the house and it's there when I can take it.

leiaskye · 14/04/2020 09:44

I’ve got lots of things too. I’ve put them in the spare room, but DH is of the same view as yours, & would rather I just binned it all.

I can’t bring myself to do it so will keep it all until the shops re-open.

FamBae · 14/04/2020 09:44

I recieved an email last week from Barnado's telling me that my last charity shop donation a couple of weeks before lockdown earned the charity over £100, I have a gift aid card hence the email. So yes stash the bags out of sight if you can, these charities will need every penny they can get.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2020 09:45

Or there's clothing banks still open at supermarkets and dotted around. These are run by either Oxfam or for the benefit of Air Ambulances.

I know you want to support a particular charity, but you have to decide what's more important to you, supporting a particular charity, or getting the bag of clothes out of the house. We're all having to make a lot of compromises at the moment, so just look at it that way.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 14/04/2020 09:52

I strongly suspect the shop I volunteer for will be overwhelmed with donations when this is over - of course we’ll be grateful for everything people have kept for us but there is a strong possibility the storage we have will fill up in the first few days and we may need to refuse a few donations (absolutely hate doing this but we are not part of a chain so genuinely have to stop taking stuff sometimes). If it’s clothes then a lot of clothing banks in supermarket car parks etc are still open as a PP said.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 14/04/2020 09:53

@BarbaraofSeville the clothing banks at supermarkets are also not being collected from at the moment. Not til lockdown is lifted

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2020 09:56

But if there's space in them, you can use them. I walked past the recycling point in our village the other day and looked in the clothing bank because DP has old clothes to get rid of and it wasn't full.

PigInASlanket · 14/04/2020 09:57

We always have a blue Ikea bag for charity shop bits. Collect until it's full then donate. Its currently under the stairs though as 14m DD finds it too irresistible to empty.

Ellmau · 14/04/2020 10:03

YANBU. I have a big and increasing pile of books I have finished and won't reread - I always do, but now I can't diminish it by taking a bagful when I do my shopping as usual.

Jessie9323 · 14/04/2020 10:05

I have a boot full of baby clothes ready to go to the charity shop as I'm currently working from home and am not using my car.

Shiningbright9729 · 14/04/2020 10:07

@BarbaraofSeville the collection bins in my area have been taped off so I’ve heard on social
Media. It is the local air ambulance I want to donate to 😊 I regularly put things in clothing bins normally!

I have four bags for the charity shop plus a box of books. I will share them around the various shops once they reopen.
