Was going to take dd to the cinema to see the new Trolls movie, but for obvious reasons we can't. I heard it was going to be available to rent on Amazon Prime for a one time view, and expected it to be 5 pounds at the most. Turns out the bloody thing costs 16 pounds to view ONCE.
No way in hell am I paying 16 quid for a kids movie you don't even get to keep.

AIBU to be shocked at this price?

£16 just to watch a film on my telly? No effing chance.

notacooldad · 13/04/2020 19:10

People saying their tickets are £5 each or even £2.50. Is that for brand new releases?
Yes.
Many of the vue cinemas charge £5 any time any day ( pre covid!!)
With schemes like meerkat where 2 people go for the price of 1 it brings the price down to £2.50 per head.i usually go with a friend so it's a cheap afternoon or evenings entertainment!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/04/2020 19:10

NowTV Cinema pass?

MorganKitten · 13/04/2020 19:10

It cost $90 million to make, they need to recoup that!

MigginsMs · 13/04/2020 19:12

Military wives was the same, I would have gone to see it on my own so way cheaper than £16, so won’t be bothering

Smileyaxolotl1 · 13/04/2020 19:13

Vue cinemas in south London do not charge £5 unfortunately.
And you can’t compare it to buying a film as you can’t buy cinema release films at the time they are on in the cinema. There is always a 4-6 month gap.

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 19:14

£40 for us to see it at the cinema, plus snacks. £9.99 on virgin media. I haven't rented it yet but we will this week. Bowl of popcorn and we're sorted and £28 better off.

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 19:15

I suspect for those in areas of the country that are well off this might seem a fairer price. To those of us who live in poorer areas of the country, our cinema tickets are obviously way cheaper.
I can see any new release for £7.50 for an adult any day except Friday night or Saturday.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/04/2020 19:18

The odeon near me charges c. £14 per adult and c. £9 for a child. The vue is far more reasonable.
All quickly adds up for a family of 4 plus snacks

LightACandleHoney · 13/04/2020 19:21

Well yes - as I said above, some people live in areas with cheaper cinema prices. We actually live in an area with £5 tickets which I know is ok. However, as a family of 6 - a cinema trip with all of us still costs £30. If you are a small family with only 1 child, then yes this is expensive, but if you have 3 or more in your family (adults and kids total) then £16 is still a decent price for a new film.

But sure some people just want everything for a knock down price - no matter who pays the bill on their behalf. Stingey whingers.

Mammyloveswine · 13/04/2020 19:26

@upandgoing yes! I noticed it on there this morning!

Notnownotneverever · 13/04/2020 19:26

I agree. I expected it to be £10. For those comparing it to a cinema ticket prices, that is ridiculous. You can’t compare the two experiences as they are completely different. You are not going to the cinema, experiencing it on a massive high quality screen with high quality surround sound. You are only viewing it on your TV So why would you want to pay a cinema price.

Sparklesocks · 13/04/2020 19:28

Oof yes that’s high. It’s one thing in a cinema where overheads are higher, and I imagine they need to do it at a certain price so they don’t lose the money they would’ve made if it had been released normally, but it still seems like that price is very high and they’d be likely to get more customers if they lowered it.
I think you’re more likely to pay more at he cinema because you think oh it’s a day out, it’s a treat - but sitting at home in your living room is another experience entirely.

MuseumOfYou · 13/04/2020 19:30

£3.50 a head all week in our Dorset market town!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/04/2020 19:30

I think of it as a first release price- it’s a new film.

BoingBoingyBoing · 13/04/2020 19:31

" For those comparing it to a cinema ticket prices, that is ridiculous. You can’t compare the two experiences as they are completely different."

Cinemas aren't open now, so the films are being released straight to the home market, so if you don't want to pay £16 you can wait until it comes out in a few months time to own or rent.

People saying that they can watch a film for a fiver at their vue are also forgetting that for that price you can't have multiple people watching the film or watch it more than once.

goldenorbspider · 13/04/2020 19:33

That's bloody extortion! Disney is £5, Netflix recently added lots of studio ghibli content.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 13/04/2020 19:33

I've voted YABU, as I agree it does sound steep but if you think about it, it's a brand new cinema release and it'd cost a hell of a lot more to go to the cinema!
When it's approx 40 quid for us all to go the cinema usually, 16 is nothing really and pretty good!I
I mean, no-one can go to the cinema right now so this is a way to do it at home.
It's what you make it.
Make your own tickets etc and set up your own popcorn station Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 13/04/2020 19:36

£3.50 a head all week in our Dorset market town!

Shock For new releases? Not everyone is so lucky. Our nearest cinema is approx 10 pounds per adult ticket and 8 for children. If you're a family of 4 it's bloody expensive just for the tickets and that's before you've gone anywhere near the snacks and drinks!
lowlandLucky · 13/04/2020 19:38

The little ones will not be impressed when they cant watch it again. They know at the cinema you only get to watch it once but at home they can watch it again and again and again. There will be tantrums.

Vgbeat · 13/04/2020 19:42

We did it as I expected to see it at the cinema and would not have waited for it to come to kids club. I sent her out for a walk with her dad. Set up signs like a real cinema and printed tickets. I then set up a little concession stand. She is 9 and absolutely loved it. I wouldn't normally spend 16 quid on a 48 hour rental but it was cheaper then going to the cinema and made a nice treat

DollyDoneMore · 13/04/2020 19:42

I think £16 is a hell of a lot to stream a film. I wouldn’t pay it.

Definitely taking the piss, knowing people have no choice.

But I do have a choice. I am choosing not to pay it. It will find its way onto other, cheaper streaming services over time.

it'd cost a hell of a lot more to go to the cinema!

Well, yeah, but I’d get a night out at the the cinema for that. It’s not comparable at all.

womaninatightspot · 13/04/2020 19:43

It does seem expensive to me, would have paid it if you owned the film after. A tenner seems fairer, apparently costs that on virgin so assuming extra is going to amazon not dreamworks. It'll be cheaper in a couple of weeks.

Cinema is a treat sitting in the front room not so much. Especially if I have to hoover up popcorn afterwards.

crankyhousewife · 13/04/2020 19:54

Its over £10 a ticket to go to the cinema here so think it's a bit of a bargain if it was something I wanted to see.

Walkingwild · 13/04/2020 19:57

I was the same op, was going to watch the invisible man but changed my mind at £15.99.
Could have stretched to £10 so I’m waiting to see if it comes down
