AIBU to think that Y11's will go back to school?

If schools reopen in May, which I heard that they are considering, will Y11's have to go back? I have asked others about this and they are either unsure or think that it will only be Y7-Y10 as school will be nearly over for Y11's anyway. Will they have to go back?

No they won't

Misssmoo · 13/04/2020 15:28

I dont think they will have to but would be lovely if they could and have a proper goodbye

Haggisfish · 13/04/2020 15:29

No why would they? Some might to start prepping for year 12.

Joannaslight3 · 13/04/2020 15:29

@OxanaVorontsova Do you have any source of this? Was considering whether to get rid of DC's school stuff but not sure.

No, schools will have already submitted data by then to create GCSE grades, so year 11 returning to school would be completely pointless.

AlwaysCheddar · 13/04/2020 15:30

Yes, to get them into a routine and prep for next stages of education.

Rummikub · 13/04/2020 15:30

I can't see year 11s going back in May as there are no exams. I also wonder if school return will be staggered; perhaps prioritising year 10 and year 12 to enable social distancing to be possible.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 13/04/2020 15:31

Nobody knows.

There is no answer.

Death rate is still rising.

Our headmaster sent an email saying our (state school) will definitely not be opening until (at least) September... but will be organising a 'goodbye' day for all yr 13 and Yr 11s who are not staying for sixth form.

Makeitgoaway · 13/04/2020 15:31

No, not having yr11 or yr13 would be a way of managing the staff absence levels that will still be apparent becuse of the number of vulnerable staff.

I'd like to think they'll manage some sort of leavers do nut suspect not.

What has changed to suggest schools will be back after HT anyway? Most still seem to be assuming Sept.

my2bundles · 13/04/2020 15:32

Very doubtfull any year group would go back as early as May.

OxanaVorontsova · 13/04/2020 15:33

Why would they? If in a school with sixth form there might be some Y12 transition at some point, but in terms of going back as y11, there's no reason to. Going in to say goodbye e.g. a leavers' assembly may happen, but again that's not going back to school as such.

LittleOwl153 · 13/04/2020 15:33

I guess you have to think what would the school do once exams are over. If they have a final assembly etc hopefully they will still do that day if they get the chance. If they don't and the last time they are all in school would be the day before exam leave then they probably won't. I don't think I'd ditch the stuff entirely yet but maybe all the bits and bobs. What would your dc want to do if offered to go back for a day/week?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 13/04/2020 15:33

I've kept DS's stuff, just in case but I honestly can't see them going back until September.

There aren't any exams to revise for and it would seem pointless.

The school are starting to send out A'Level work after Easter and I think that's fine.

bigchris · 13/04/2020 15:34

No I don't think year 11 and year 13 will go back

Redglitter · 13/04/2020 15:35

What stage of school is Y11 for those of us not in England & who have no idea what your year system is??

CarolineIngalls · 13/04/2020 15:35

No, in normal circumstances my Year 11 DS last day of timetable would be next week - and they were scheduled to be off for revision and only in for exams. There is no world where Year 11s come in for timetable in June/July.

Year 11s are mentally done. If you dragged them in with a uniform a Year 11 timetable they would be a challenge to teach.

OxanaVorontsova · 13/04/2020 15:35

We said goodbye to our Y11s on the Friday schools closed. my daughter's school has arranged a Y11 leavers' assembly for the autumn term. I think schools will have enough to deal with IF they go back before the end of the summer term in terms of managing staffing levels, as Makeitgoaway says.

Joannaslight3 · 13/04/2020 15:35

@Redglitter The last stage of school, where there should be exams but they were cancelled.

OP posts:
Devlesko · 13/04/2020 15:36

Mine won't.
We had an email saying start back in sept for all the school. Mine is Y11, too.
She's hoping to get a start on A levels before returning though and her teachers are available between 9am - 4.30 pm (normal school day) mon - friday.

RedHelenB · 13/04/2020 15:37

The year they do gcses (first public exams)

Redglitter · 13/04/2020 15:39

@Joannaslight3. Its so confusing when our system is so different. Is that the year doing their first set of exams then?? Still with 2 more years to go?

LittleOwl153 · 13/04/2020 15:40

May makes a lot of sense in many ways. When lock down is lifted we will likely get a second peak. (The only way of preventing this is full lock down until there is a vaccine - which is simply not possible as the world's economy will die waiting). Therefore bringing the kids back in and the general workforce back into action - which needs the childcare fully operational not to heavily discriminate - in May means the second peak will be June /July and not when the winter flu season hits in November onwards (which cripples the NHS on a usual year).

Joannaslight3 · 13/04/2020 15:41

@redglitter No it's the first set of exams but it's the last year of school before moving on to a-levels, btecs, or apprenticeships etc

OP posts:
Genevieva · 13/04/2020 15:41

Schools won't reopen until June at the earliest. The government was very clear that it was only worth doing for a minimum of 12 weeks. Exams are cancelled for that reason.

Makeitgoaway · 13/04/2020 15:42

Some schools are officially declaring they wont be back until September? Are these state schools? There's been no such instruction from DfE.
