AIBU to think that Y11's will go back to school?

If schools reopen in May, which I heard that they are considering, will Y11's have to go back? I have asked others about this and they are either unsure or think that it will only be Y7-Y10 as school will be nearly over for Y11's anyway. Will they have to go back?

Legally y11s are officially still on the school roll until the last Friday in June, some most if not all allow study leave once they're down to the last few exams.

I work with y11 and tbh it's been a massive slog to get them to March 20th. They've been told exams are cancelled and to be honest most y11 teachers would be up in arms about babysitting them after so long out of school. There may be some exceptions (vulnerable, safeguarding) but I cannot imagine having to look after kids that didn't want to be in school when they needed to be, never mind now exams are cancelled.

My own dc is also in Y11 and I will not be sending him back to school unless for y12 transition or leavers assembly etc.

PepperMooMoo · 13/04/2020 16:49

Why have some state schools announced they won't be going back to school? 🤔

We have had no guidance from the government that's the case, unless the schools mentioned are in Scotland?

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 13/04/2020 16:57

It is very doubtful anyone will go back to school before September never mind May.

I have kept DS’s uniform just incase he goes in for 6th form induction days at the end of June but i would say it is extremely doubtful. They said goodbyes on the Friday and may have a prom in the autumn.

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 13/04/2020 17:00

Where have you heard schools will go back in May!?

PepperMooMoo · 13/04/2020 17:04

I haven't had any clarification either way, which is why I was wondering why a school had said closed until September.

On MN, people seem to discount going back in June as pointless, not on this thread but others I have seen. I can't understand why they wouldn't think 7 weeks education wouldn't be worthwhile?

Leaannb · 13/04/2020 17:14

@PepperMooMoo Same reason my 17 yo already has his high school diploma and in 2 weeks he will be in Basic Training for the Marine Corp. They have already cancelled exams and the students all ready know where they are going to do and be. It would be absolutely pointless

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2020 17:17

I think many people are scared. I don’t think it’s scaremongering, or not understand it etc for many, I think they are just scared to send their kids back, for themselves to go back and work, so project it as late as possible. Others clearly don’t want to go back to work, so kids staying off will enable that some what, but I think predominantly it’s fear.

PepperMooMoo · 13/04/2020 17:25

@Leaannb I understand the scenario of Year 11 and 13 not returning but in general on this thread people were saying their school had made the decision not to return this year, I'm assuming for all years? Seems slightly premature?

I do think people are scared, but at some point we have to adjust back to our normal patterns. Schools reopening will be a huge step to supporting the economy to recover, when it's safe. I also find it baffling how the school have made an announcement they'll be returning in September, by that rationale, where is the evidence we'll be ready to return then?!

lalafafa · 13/04/2020 17:26

No way. They would have finished week 1/2 of June anyway.

BeingLonely · 13/04/2020 17:27

It’s sad but I honestly don’t think the schools will be back this side of summer. We are nowhere near a flattening of cases

Noodledoodledoo · 13/04/2020 17:37

The government has said no clear end date for schools closures, could be May half term, could be July, could be September. Who knows I honestly don't think anyone has an answer at the moment.

I know the school I teach at and the one my children go to have not given any indication of a return date so I am shocked other heads have said they know.

My teaching school has said it will try to organise a leavers day for Yr 11 and 13 if possible as they missed out.

Leaannb · 13/04/2020 18:18

@PepperMooMoo they haven't said that the schools aren't returning until September. That's pure speculation. In my opinion its very good speculation due to how the teachers are paid. If any one think any of the kids world wide are going back to school in Mid-May then they are seriously delusional. It won't be that quick. Its very doubtful that any of the schools can come up with a way to pay the teachers for working during the break. They are still getting paid now. So people are assuming this school year is a complete wash out and will resume in the fall. Having the kids keep their summer will not hurt the economy

optimisticpessimist01 · 13/04/2020 18:19

Y11's will not be back at school, exams are cancelled so whats the point? Schools are not a babysitting service. Most school's Y11s leave during May half term returning for exams only anyway

optimisticpessimist01 · 13/04/2020 18:22

Schools opening are NOT the first thing you open when you want to slowly start easing a lock down, they are the last. Schools opening signifies the end of lock down. Nevermind the fact that some schools have 2000 students which will not be social distancing, you have to incorporate the travel to and from school and the fact that those students will now not take any restrictions seriously and travel between households.

You do not open a school to slowly ease a lock down, you open schools to signify the end of lock downs. Schools are the hardest thing to control during social distancing, in fact one of the few things you have no control over

@optimisticpessimist01

Absolutely and the ‘science’ agrees with you, too.

nellythenarwhal · 13/04/2020 18:42

I think they wouldn't come back for social distancing reasons. Maybe a Leavers Assembly at a push?

nellythenarwhal · 13/04/2020 18:45

If school reopen this side of September, I would assume that it will be just y10, y12 and the key worker children in y7.

ElloElloVera · 13/04/2020 18:48

I believe that Y11’s won’t go back.
Plus this helps with social distancing as one less school year in the building so to speak.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 13/04/2020 18:50

No.

Exams are cancelled. Even if - and it is a bloody big if - schools do go back at some point before the holidays, there will be no point Y11 going in.

However, I'd keep the school stuff. They may want to resit exams. Schools may have leavers' assemblies in July or Sept.

workercovid · 13/04/2020 21:19

No it won't be until June at the earliest and in my day not sure about now most left at Easter and just returned for exams.
they are having their marks estimated by teachers so they have finished until year 12
My two are in year 10 and they are the year which has the most to lose I think, they where only just getting into the stride of their GCSE's and they may not go back until September giving them 3 months before mocks and which is what they rely on if the gcse is not as good as predicted.

Lexijayde44 · 14/04/2020 12:51

@optimisticpessimist01

But parents can't work until kids are in education again. If other places open first like days out, beaches, pubs and the kids are off school you will have people all out and about it the sun.
I think schools will return first personally. I'm thinking the last term before summer.

Devlesko · 14/04/2020 15:30

I think to make it fair if schools do open before september it should be for childcare only and run by childcare workers, not teachers.
Then those who don't need childcare can keep them at home, without them missing education.
Parents at home could educate until september if they wanted to.

edwinbear · 14/04/2020 15:49

DC's private school are hoping to be open again before September. We have a 20% discount on fees until they reopen so if they can, they will.

Umnoway · 14/04/2020 16:04

Exams have been cancelled so they really don’t any reason to return at all. I teach in a college and have been told not to expect to return before my mat leave kicks in in early July.
