Where have all the biblical classic films gone?

I know that Easter isn't celebrated by everyone but just as Elf etc. Is on every Christmas on TV where have all the grand biblical films from my youth gone? This was part of an Easter ritual in my household, sitting down to watch an epic marathon long film.
I really miss them and I'm sure many older than me do too.
Does anyone else miss them?

Just had a look and a few are available on catch up on BBC2.

mogloveseggs · 13/04/2020 12:26

I the one about Moses was on channel 5 I think yesterday? I watched most of it it was very good!

ToyKitchenSink · 13/04/2020 12:27

I haven't seen any films about Passover (which falls just before Easter - the last supper being the first night of Passover). Where's the Prince of Egypt when you need him?!

user1473343040 · 13/04/2020 12:29

Prince of Egypt is on Amazon Prime.

Zombiemum1946 · 13/04/2020 12:29

I do remember when being regularly ill as a child that many of these films were all that was on offer . I grew up in the 70's and 80's so only 2 then 3 then 4 channels. That meant you didn't have far to look if you really wanted to watch them. There was even the option of the video rental van that came round on the weekend.

AnnieOH1 · 13/04/2020 12:29

There's also the myriad of faith based subscription channels. I'd rather watch something on Living Scriptures than attempt to navigate TV times/adverts. As far as I'm aware isn't it part of licensing that the BBC at least have to provide so much faith based TV still?

Paddington68 · 13/04/2020 12:30

The Robe is on BBC2

SuckingDieselFella · 13/04/2020 12:35

@AnnieOH1

Films don't count as faith based programmes.

"The greatest story ever told" was on bbc this weekend

fuckinghellthisshit · 13/04/2020 12:39

If you want the equivalent of 'Elf' the weird and terrifying 'Hop' is on Netflix. I don't know that anyone watches a nativity film do they? Christianity stole the best festivals - mid winter and spring and piggybacked them so there are mixed messages to say the least.

mogtheexcellent · 13/04/2020 13:41

Dont forget andrew lloyd webber has put jesus christ superstar on you tube.

jesseateathesaurus · 13/04/2020 13:47

They’ve been all the main stream channels all week! You should watch them on catch up... they are, for the most part, super fixing cheesy. Blue eyed jesuses, square
-jawed American accented Moses butnif that’s your Hamm- got for it. Watch the old white washed religious stories.

Paddington68 · 13/04/2020 14:12

The Greatest Story is on I player.

Paddington68 · 13/04/2020 14:14

@SuckingDieselFella@ So there's a fair number on the telly then. Where are those middle class tv executives? As I said your comment is nonsense. When we were young there were only 3 channels, rather more today.

Sewrainbow · 13/04/2020 14:18

The greatest story ever told, the robe and the ten commandments were all on this weekend and all are biblical.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/04/2020 14:23

I love a big shite biblical epic (atheist). I think they remind me of the interminable Easter weekends of my childhood. I had Ten Commandments on yesterday. Forgot how long it was until dh said “I didn’t realise it was filmed in real time.”

Planesmistakenforstars · 13/04/2020 14:43

My DP said something very similar. I told him The Robe is on this afternoon, and he's decided to paint the shed. I love these films too, and sword & sandals films in general. No idea why, Neither of my parents were Christian and I'm a staunch atheist.

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2020 14:52

The Robe is fabulous. First ever movie filmed in CinemaScope wasn’t it?

And Ben Hur, when he finds his mum and sister and they’re lepers - and then they get cured. Weeps.

SuckingDieselFella · 13/04/2020 15:00

You need to try reading what I wrote instead of writing "nonsense, nonsense". That isn't a constructive discussion.

They used to be on at PEAK time, such as teatime on Easter Sunday, on one of the MAIN channels. I remember Jesus of Nazareth with Robert Powell being screened at that time. It doesn't happen any more.

RishiSunakFanClub · 13/04/2020 16:08

To that great dustbin in the sky, if we are lucky.

Paddington68 · 13/04/2020 16:12

@SuckingDieselFella@

Your original comment states - Christian films aren't allowed any more because it's the majority religion imposing their beliefs on minorities. Or something.

Middle class Christian TV executives have decided on this. I doubt that any member of a minority religion would care.

Yet we have highlighted a number of these films shown over the Easter period. So they must be allowed. Your argument is now they aren't on at peak times. If it's on I- player I can play something at whatever time I like. And make it peak, if I so desire.

chomalungma · 13/04/2020 16:33

So that's been proved to be false then.

I saw The Ten Commandments was on recently

Ben Hur's on quite a lot

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/04/2020 16:35

Passion of Christ is pretty much the only proper Easter movie I know and it isn’t suitable for children

Jammydodger1981 · 13/04/2020 17:03

We watched the greatest story ever told as I found out through doing our family history that we’re related to Joanna Dunham who plays Mary Magdalene and I wanted to show dd1.

It is so long, 4 hours and 20 minutes I think! We both really enjoyed it though.

cybercontroller · 13/04/2020 17:26

@SuckingDieselFella

If Christian films aren't shown as much anymore it's because people don't want to watch them as much, not because of some sort of fear of offending people. They show what people will watch because it makes the most money.
