Is it me or are the birds behaving strangely?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the birds seem to be much more tame and less afraid. When I went for my daily walk yesterday, there were a few blackbirds in my path that didn't seem that bothered i was there- when normally they would fly off or move a fair distance. They also seem to be singing and fighting a lot more. It's fucking weird. It all feels like Alfred Hitchcock's 'the birds'.

We've got several newly hatched blackbirds in our hedge (sw London). It's been lovely watching mum and dad work so hard to feed them. Bloody magpie has just come along to try to get them so we've put some chicken wire in front of the nest now. Mum and dad can still access them to feed but magpie can't!

bellinisurge · 13/04/2020 18:19

It's spring. Fewer cars etc so you hear them more.

Or is it? Mwah ha ha!

Seriously, it's spring. It's what they do.

nickygurr78 · 13/04/2020 19:01

Yes Jane, they are drones employed by the government to take lewd photographs of elderly Japanese climate-orientated politicians

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 13/04/2020 19:05

I’ve noticed we have quite a few crows appeared from no where. Usually just magpies, sparrows, the odd thrush blackbirds and robin. But suddenly crows. - one tried to steal the dogs toy the other day!

AvalancheKit · 14/04/2020 15:05

Reading this thread and all I hear is these lyrics in my mind Grin

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

HarrietOh · 14/04/2020 17:33

The sea gulls near my home are flying around very confused at the spot they normally hang about at, because no one is there eating fish and chips!

Bargebill19 · 14/04/2020 17:40

It’s spring and it’s quieter. You notice them more. They are busy doing what birds always do at this time of year. Wink wink.

lily2403 · 14/04/2020 17:41

I have noticed but have put it down to not many people around to make the fly off

Passenger42 · 14/04/2020 17:50

They are having an awesome time eating loads of worms from all the gardens that have been mowed by drunken people in charge of lawnmowers

Symposium123 · 14/04/2020 17:51

It's you.

Take off your tinfoil hat

Rude and unnecessary.

There are two great fat pigeons who coo loudly every morning right outside our window. We discovered about a week ago, they were trying to make a nest behind our Sky dish. After poking near them with a great big stick every time they tried it, they would fly off and then just fly straight back again. Yesterday, they just sat there looking at my husband poking the stick around them, refusing to move. It was like they were mocking him! In the end he literally had to touch them with the stick in order for them to go....and they still flew straight back Hmm

FelicisNox · 14/04/2020 18:21

I agree with the sex and hormones theory: I had 3 wood pigeons in a proper love triangle in my garden the other day.... it was like the bird version of Eastenders. I was riveted.

Christ I'm old.

Aglet · 14/04/2020 18:26

Blackbirds are always bold at this time of year because they are intent on getting enough food for their young.

BubblesBuddy · 14/04/2020 18:31

Just found a blackbird nest in one of our hedges. We have so many blackbirds visiting I’m sure there are more nests.

We had the crow ferociously attacking the red kites today. Dive bombing them like a Spitfire from behind. The red kites flap loudly and change direction to try and escape. We think their nests are too close together!

AdoptAdaptImprove · 14/04/2020 18:43

Small joke. Is that not allowed?

Kayagh · 14/04/2020 18:43

Yes they are trying to build a nest in my chimney and of course clearing said nest I got a piece of god knows what in my eye hate bloody black birds now

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 18:49

Black birds nesting in chimneys are likely to be jackdaws. We used to get them until we had a sort of 'cage' fixed onto the chimney pot.

keeptheaspidistra · 14/04/2020 18:51

They're just having the time of their lives

Is it me or are the birds behaving strangely?
Mlou32 · 14/04/2020 18:52

Maybe due to less people around, no crowds?

dementedma · 14/04/2020 18:53

I have noticed more road kill - deer, badgers, foxes etc. I think with the roads being quieter they are not as careful as they were previously
Loving the bird song coming from the garden at the moment. it’s very soothing.

ShinyS1 · 14/04/2020 18:54

Yes I've noticed. My car, patio, drive and path has 80% more bird shit splattered over it than it usually does.

ListeningQuietly · 14/04/2020 18:55

Road kill : Young males are roaming with things on their minds other than traffic
more badgers on major roads as the level of traffic has scared them away less
but far fewer foxes
ALSO
A very mild winter killed less mammals than normal

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 14/04/2020 19:00

My husband has noticed this too. They are definitely more tame here. One near enough landed at my feet in the garden this afternoon

Lillyringlet · 14/04/2020 19:03

Stay at home mum with two toddlers. Before this week there would be so many birds all through the week days but not any more. We have a Robin come but that's it these days in the garden. With everyone home and in their gardens so much, they aren't about so much.
Out and about though they are doing spring things but far less scared as of the lack of cars and people about.

It is very spring time behaviour, just now people are seeing it more with not much else to do
