Is it me or are the birds behaving strangely?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the birds seem to be much more tame and less afraid. When I went for my daily walk yesterday, there were a few blackbirds in my path that didn't seem that bothered i was there- when normally they would fly off or move a fair distance. They also seem to be singing and fighting a lot more. It's fucking weird. It all feels like Alfred Hitchcock's 'the birds'.

Blackbirds are quite friendly on the whole, as are collared doves etc But they are in crazy nesting mode at the moment and they are out in droves nicking bits off all the plants for their nests and being noisy. I'm finding them quite funny to watch in the garden. We have quite a few regulars that come up to me for feeding, they can be quite tame sometimes.

OP glad I’m not the only one, I thought I was going mad!!! There is something different that’s for sure. I live in a very big city centre, the pigeons are all brooding or doing that gross thing where they’re all fluffed up (I hate/ fear them at the best of times) and they’re all sat on the ground not in trees. Their poop looks enormous too and very green, god knows what they’re eating. Seagulls also flying around the place when we are miles from any coastline.

Crows here in large numbers too, can’t they smell death? I remember a video from China early in their outbreak with huge flocks of Crows flying around the cities.

Definitely has a vibe of The Birds. 🤢🙈

Noticed a couple of blackbirds yesterday next to the road, didn't fly away when I was right next to them

Wehttam · 13/04/2020 11:10

Purpletigers I hope you are VERY wrong lol. 😂👀

AvalancheKit · 13/04/2020 11:11

You are just noticing them more, its as simple as that.

Aesopfable · 13/04/2020 11:11

We are surrounded by new crows. Very odd

Haven’t you seen the news? Covid is everwhere

slartibarti · 13/04/2020 11:12

Thanks Littlepond, hadn't heard about the goats so googled and found a Looked like they were having a ball Smile.

Wehttam · 13/04/2020 11:12

Errolthedragon I’ll never listen to bird song quite the same again hahahahaha!

onalongsabbatical · 13/04/2020 11:13

No you're right, I think they're happier and braver because we've basically got a lot quieter and less of a problem for them - less pollution and noise etc.
I'd say long may it last but I'm mindful of the people who are indoors with abusers etc.
But for the birds I'm very happy. Smile

Oldraver · 13/04/2020 11:13

All I could hear all day yesterday (apart from the odd plane) was a pair of Red Kites trying to court...and a bloody crow kept on getting in their way.

Up until the last year or so I had never heard Red Kites, they have certainly become bloody noisy recently

Aesopfable · 13/04/2020 11:13

Covids are everywhere

HuggedTheRedwoods · 13/04/2020 11:14

Look at the goats in the welsh village!

Littlepond - those videos cheer me up every time, Llandudno (bit more than a village I think) is top of my list to visit when local restrictions are lifted! Grin

nitgel · 13/04/2020 11:16

i keep seeing bird dust bathing, it's very sweet. and birds just laying in the mud wings spread out.

derxa · 13/04/2020 11:16

There was a pheasant in our yard yesterday. Very unusual

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/04/2020 11:18

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve just fed the birds. I’m finishing off the bird food before stopping for the summer.

midsomermurderess · 13/04/2020 11:20

The Chinese are controlling them through 5G.

Bromeliads · 13/04/2020 11:20

I live in a school and they always do this in the holidays. It is quite noticeable. Presumably much of the country is like a school in the holidays at the moment!

There’s a blackbird best building in my tiny garden. He’s been at it the whole weekend. It is life-affirming!

Figmentofmyimagination · 13/04/2020 11:22

Nest building! Not best building Grrr

LolaDarkdestroyer · 13/04/2020 11:25

Omg yeah...when I rised up this morning I smiled at the rising sun, 3 little birds pitched by my doorstep! Singing sweet songs, of melodies pure and true saying..this is a message to you ou ou ou

DogInATent · 13/04/2020 11:27

People are stopping and noticing things for the first time. Most of the population are oblivious to nature 99% of the time.

The weather's been nice, Spring has sprung, birds and the bees and all that stuff (ask your mother).

There's less dropped food and litter, so fewer Gregg's crumbs and discarded McDonald's chips to eat.

More people are gardening, turning over soil and revealing insects, etc. It's bringing birds closer to homes.

LakieLady · 13/04/2020 11:27

The only thing odd about the birds round our way is that we appear to have 2 cock robins nesting in our garden.

I thought that they were very territorial and wouldn't nest close to other robins. We've seen them going in and out of the hedge at 2 points, approx 40' apart.

I suppose it could be one robin with 2 nests, as we've never seen both at the same time, but that seems unlikely.

KoalasandRabbit · 13/04/2020 11:29

We have lots of birds singing very loudly in the garden at the moment, I think they are louder (or maybe humans are quieter) but we are rural with a thatched roof and holly tree with berries so birds have always loved our house. Dh is French and saw pictures of the deer in the streets in Orleans, France which never happens normally, think they reclaimed the streets. Our pets are loving it, our cat now has 24/7 servants. MrsMozartMkII · 13/04/2020 11:29

Pigeons seem to be less either aware of or afraid of cars. I've had a couple of near misses in the last week.
