and to think that they are one thing that certainly hasn't got smaller over time?

The 'standard' size of egg when I was a kid was smaller than the ones that are generally on offer here for £1. And the offers, and meeting what people want to buy has meant that the range seems to have shrunk a lot.

I used to get a huge Terry’s egg from partner called Terry, not very original but it tasted great!

BertieBotts · 12/04/2020 22:32

I remember rolos being amazing, but I had one the other day and it was horrible.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/04/2020 22:33

I had a bit of the DC's Mini Egg egg today. It sort of bent rather than snapped, then sort of went mushy and plastic in my mouth rather than melting.
I didn't bother having any more of it.

Smarties do have the sweets in the egg.

Tumbleweed101 · 12/04/2020 22:39

They used to have more interesting packaging and more of the small treats that went with the easter eggs than they do now.

everythingbackbutyou · 13/04/2020 07:52

The packaging was so beautiful in the 70s and early 80s. What a bittersweet nostalgic trip looking through those was.

Blackdog19 · 13/04/2020 07:55

Oh yes, I loved the toffee mallow ones- weren’t they cream egg sized?

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 08:03

Ah, the rattle of the sweets inside the egg... eggs don't rattle anymore.

Must hunt out tootie frooties, an antidote to the chocolate overload!

ChicChicChicChiclana · 13/04/2020 08:13

Yanbu op. Global capitalism has a lot to answer for - see how Walls now have a virtual monopoly on ice cream sales in Europe and how Colgate sell about 75% of all toothpastes. We definitely used to have more choice as consumers in some goods.

PatchworkElmer · 13/04/2020 08:15

Small smarties eggs with smarties inside... bigger smarties eggs with the beautiful spotty foil!!

justanotherneighinparadise · 13/04/2020 08:22

Seeing those pictures I felt the rush of excitement I used to feel as a child 😍

HighNoon · 13/04/2020 08:25

YABU. That's a compilation of eggs over 30 years so will be a lot of variety compared to one year's range.. Plus nostalgia is glossing over the fact that Black Magic chocolates were nasty, and Creme Eggs are sickly sweet and claggy. YABVU too, to remind us about Tootie Frooties. Loved them (not thought about them in years) and miss them now!!!

secretfreckle · 13/04/2020 08:42

Thanks for sharing the pictures!
My grandma used to give my brother and me a Suchard egg each every year. They had flowers iced on the outside and looked amazing, although the chocolate wasn't actually that nice! I had completely forgotten those toffee mallow eggs. They were very nice.
Did not see any eggs with mugs/egg cups this year. Where have they all gone?!

Oilyoilyoilgob · 13/04/2020 09:08

This reminds me of being little-thanks so much for posting @DrMadelineMaxwell my older brother enjoyed reminiscing too 🥰

The packaging was beautiful, and yes to the chocs inside with an egg that parted perfectly. When you could choose to eat a thick or thin part of the chocolate egg!

bridgetreilly · 13/04/2020 09:21

I am still sad that you don't get Easter eggs with chocolates INSIDE them anymore. A chocolate bar on the side is just not as exciting.

I mean, I'm 45, but I would still find chocolate buttons inside a chocolate egg exciting.

Dontlikeoranges · 13/04/2020 09:58

Oh I would be in heaven if they make fresh minty eggs again

Rockbird · 13/04/2020 14:38

Suchard. What happened to Suchard, haven't heard that name in years.

ElfDragon · 13/04/2020 15:01

I’ve just read this, remembered Tooty Frooties, and now need some only to discover they were discontinued last year 😱

I can’t believe that! I loved Tooty Frooties. They were the only sweets where purple was almost my favourite. How can they not be available anymore!

KrakowDawn · 13/04/2020 17:09

@rockbird suchard were bought by kraft

BoswellsBollocks · 13/04/2020 17:22

Does anyone remember these in the 80s?
Kinder brand with mini chocolate and hazelnut (I think) eggs inside.

PineappleDanish · 13/04/2020 17:26

The Macintosh's toffee filled eggs take me right back - I remember the taste of those so clearly. They were lovely.

Agree that the boxes were much prettier in the 70s and 80s.

Siameasy · 13/04/2020 17:26

Jelly Tots! It seems weird now to think of an egg with non-chocolate sweets in
You can get the mug/accessory ones in places like B and M.
The variety now is themes I think eg Shimmer and Shine or Trolls rather than brand
