To miss the range of Easter eggs that used to be available...

and to think that they are one thing that certainly hasn't got smaller over time?

The 'standard' size of egg when I was a kid was smaller than the ones that are generally on offer here for £1. And the offers, and meeting what people want to buy has meant that the range seems to have shrunk a lot.

Thank you for the link op.

My mum won and entire box of the mint eggs at the village shop. They went in the freezer I seem to think.

Rockbird · 12/04/2020 21:26

Yes. Oh my goodness, memory lane! Do they still make tootie frooties? I could just eat some now.

vroc81 · 12/04/2020 21:26

My mum and I were discussing mackintosh toffee eggs this morning... loved them.. my sister and I would hunt one colour each and then mix them up to put them back in the box...

CoffeeRunner · 12/04/2020 21:28

I miss the foil wrapped eggs with the sweeties in the middle.

TheSquitz · 12/04/2020 21:29

Yes Tooti Frooties still exist, Rockbird. The purple ones are the best obviously.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/04/2020 21:30

And Easter egg chocolate always tasted so much better.

Zoecarter · 12/04/2020 21:30

Wool worth’s used to do a set of Snow White and the seven dwarves caramel eggs in alternating pink and orange wrappers I would love them again

Pipandmum · 12/04/2020 21:32

Cadbury creme eggs have definitely shrunk.

Standrewsschool · 12/04/2020 21:33

I miss the chocolates being inside the eggs. As a child, that was exciting - opening up the eggs and having the chocolate inside.

(Chocolate manufacturers - I hope you are listening).

Also, the toys in a Kinder eggs were much better in the past, not just some toy from the latest blockbuster. You actually had to build something.

Rosebel · 12/04/2020 21:41

We have loads of Easter egg must from years ago, smarties, wispa, caramel. I haven't seen any with mugs for ages. Yorkie lorries were the best.

halcyondays · 12/04/2020 21:42

The Toffee and Mallow eggs were the best. And what happened to Nutcracker eggs?

Ozzfest · 12/04/2020 21:48

My lovely late brother, been without him 20 years now, always used to get my ds a Smarties egg in the spotty mug (despite me asking him not too - the actual Smarties in the egg used to make ds bounce off the walls🙄)
We used to try and ‘lose’ the Smarties and just let him have the chocolate.
One year, I got distracted and the little horror scoffed the lot, entire egg and Smarties😱
The ‘little darling‘ was still singing ‘the wheels on the bus go round and round’ at 1-30am next morning....
Dbrother laughed his head off when I told him..

Merigoround · 12/04/2020 21:51

When I was a child we got many eggs given to us by family friends. It was weird since we had very little of anything else.
My favourite then was a buttons egg . The buttons were inside the egg wrapped in brown greaseproof paper which smelled deliciously like chocolate itself.
I could spin out the eating of the buttons over a long period by wrapping and unwrapping after each one was popped into my mouth. Then once they were all gone I would sniff and lick the paper to make sure ever molecule of chocolate was consumed.
Pure bliss.

bananaskinsnomnom · 12/04/2020 21:55

I forgot about the chocolate being inside the eggs!

I feel like they used to break in half much easier.....not exactly a problem though, but very satisfying.....

VenusClapTrap · 12/04/2020 21:57

I spent ages hunting for old style eggs with chocolates inside for my dc this year. I ended up paying a fortune in a ridiculously expensive artisan chocolatier for two bespoke eggs with handmade chocolates inside. I then dropped the fuckers on the way home and they smashed into a million pieces 😱.

Gave up, bought some bog standard ones for the dc and ate the smashed fancy ones myself.

katscamel · 12/04/2020 22:00

The mint eggs.... like Cadburys creme eggs but mint fondant inside.....yum

Likethebattle · 12/04/2020 22:01

I coveted many of these. As my parents were skint we got cheap nasty rags that tasted of horrible cheap chocolate. I desperately wanted a cadburys one. My dad used to eat the majority of them when wee were in bed as well as he was so greedy. He would eat all the cold meat for lunches, cheese, any chocolate he found whether his or not, any booze in the house. My brother got a summer job when he was 18 that was hard with long shifts and was hot. He came home looking forward to the few beers he had chilled ‘aye sorry so I drank your beer...’ the reason we were doing was that my dad was a fun ruining alcoholic..,,sorry just went off on a tangent triggered by chocolate eggs!

Likethebattle · 12/04/2020 22:01

*functioning alcoholic but fun ruining was probably right.

Toothsil · 12/04/2020 22:06

Our godmother used to get us each a Thornton's one with our name on it and it had loads of sweeties inside it like jelly mice covered in sugar and various other things. Happy memories ♥️

BertieBotts · 12/04/2020 22:15

I remember the chocolates being inside the egg, too. And then for about 10 years they weren't and I started to think I'd imagined it. Then suddenly they started to be inside the eggs again, but only in a little plastic bag!

My guess is that when the sweets were loose inside, that was when the eggs were still assembled by hand. Then when most chocolate companies changed to machines assembling eggs, it was impossible to put the sweets directly inside. Then later, this became possible again but packets simplify the process so that you can just have one machine that picks up and inserts into half eggs, whereas all the different sweets in the packets are different shapes/sizes so would need different machines.

sparklefarts · 12/04/2020 22:21

Has anyone found anything that tastes like macintoshes toffee filled eggs?

TinkysWinky · 12/04/2020 22:25

areo bubbles were loose inside the egg today!

KrakowDawn · 12/04/2020 22:26

I definitely had one of those jelly tots eggs! And the smarties ones. I loved eggheads- I've still got that brown eggcup in my cupboard Shock

KrakowDawn · 12/04/2020 22:27

Old-style rolos used to taste so nice, didn't they?

BreconBeBuggered · 12/04/2020 22:31

I miss the way the two halves of the egg would come apart, and the chocolate being thicker in some parts of the shell than others.
Our dad didn't believe in Easter eggs, so our eggs always came from kindly aunts. I'd lust after a Quality Street egg, but it would be the Smarties and Tooty Frooty ones that actually came my way.
