Every time I see the image as I log on to MN it boils my piss.

Why ? Hmm
Perfectly normal way to get an indication of if a child has a temperature.

Pigeonpresent · 12/04/2020 21:24

Just me then!

Just never seen or imagined a dr doing it when they can take a temperature with a thermometer. I’ll try and find something better to worry about...

Humans are very sensitive to temperature through their skin, I don't find that odd Confused

Growingboys · 12/04/2020 21:26

Definitely just you

Waveysnail · 12/04/2020 21:27

Just you. Everytime iv took kids the doctor feels forehead. If they feel hot then they take temp

Oakmaiden · 12/04/2020 21:28

My preferred method of checking my child's temperature is the kiss test, on the back of the neck.

I would think it odd if a doctor did that, though...

pinkazing · 12/04/2020 21:28

Also hands can be washed the covers for the thermometers need to be thrown

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/04/2020 21:29

I've never known a doctor do it that way but that's always how I check my childrens temperature. Sometimes I can tell just by looking at them.

Oysterbabe · 12/04/2020 21:31

I kiss my child's forehead and can tell instantly if they have even a slight temperature.

flippefloppe · 12/04/2020 21:31

I have 4dc and am a teacher. Have never used a thermometer. I always use my hand.

It’s weird. Sometimes my kids have felt so hot yet the thermometer has given a normal reading, I’m guessing maybe they’re are not so accurate for kids. I’m sure I read on the nhs website recently something about a child feeling hot being as accurate as a thermometer for checking a temp, but then it might just be the wine I’ve had this evening.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/04/2020 21:32

I've never used a thermometer on dd. Just the back of my hand. Dont need to know the numbers just hot or not or if it's going up or down.

fallfallfall · 12/04/2020 21:32

Probably a kind and gentle dr. Maybe someone with experience of working in countries that are less wasteful.

Moo7878 · 12/04/2020 21:33

@Oakmaiden - kiss test here too. Foolproof!

worriedandannoyed · 12/04/2020 21:34

I can tell even a slight rise in temperature by feeling my child's forehead. And for some reason she feels really hot behind her knees when she has a temperature too

Peapod29 · 12/04/2020 21:34

Ahh this is what I was thinking of. On the nhs Coronavirus page it says this

a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

ultrablue · 12/04/2020 21:36

Always placed my hand on the children's backs to see if they have a temp, still do it now they are adults x

MysteryFrog · 12/04/2020 21:36

I have permanently cold hands so my kids always feel warm to me!

CeriseClementine · 12/04/2020 21:37

I haven’t used a thermometer to see if the dc have a temperature for several years.

I can tell with my hand, every time. It’s not just being too warm, it’s being the wrong type of warm that gives it away...dry warmth that’s even all over, on their back, head and chest.

At times dh has doubted me when I’ve said one of the dc has a temperature and checks and I’m always right.

That’s just me...i’d imagine GPS who deal with it day in day out are more easily able to tell. It wouldn’t even register with me if a Dr did this.

BananaChocolateLump · 12/04/2020 21:39

I've felt mines tummies or backs since I had my first born and the midwife taught me to feel for temp there (I was feeling her forehead and panicking she was too cold)

pigsDOfly · 12/04/2020 21:41

I was having a conversation with someone earlier today about temperature taking.

He's had surgery just before lockdown and was told to take his temperature every day.

I happen to mention to him that I have awful hay fever. 'Have you taken your temperature' was his response.

Well no. If my temperature is high, I'll know, because I'll feel awful and my skin will feel hot.

Same with children. If they've got a high temperature you can usually tell from the way they are reacting, and how they feel to the touch. I always used to kiss their forehead. Always found lips were better than my hand at telling.

I would then take the temperature as a confirmation and to get the actual reading.

Surely a doctor is going to actually take a child's temperature though, rather than just relying on touch.

LellyMcKelly · 12/04/2020 21:46

I do that with my kids. I’m sure the dr would have got a thermometer if she was worried about his temperature. Why waste resources if you don’t need to.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 12/04/2020 21:48

I do that with my own DC all the time, but on the back of their neck as that's where they seem to heat up most when they have a fever. When I taught Reception I would ask if I could feel their heads if they ever told me they felt unwell and could guess with pretty decent accuracy if they were running a temperature.

Fithles · 12/04/2020 22:01

My GP told me off for relying on checking temperature with my hand. YANBU
