Every time I see the image as I log on to MN it boils my piss.

Fithles - I think if a child seems really hot to touch, is running a temp for over 12 hours or so, or seems really unwell, then it is wise to check properly with a thermometer.

However, a quick hand (or kiss) check is all that is needed to see if they have a temp initially.

Posted to soon. So for example, today my daughter was complaining that she felt hot and headachey. A quick kiss ascertained that she was no hotter than normal, so it isn't necessary to do a proper temp check. It won't give me any additional information.

If she had felt very hot to touch I would probably want to find a thermometer to check exactly how high her temp is, and to monitor if it reacted to taking paracetamol etc.

YABU unless you are a doctor.
If s/he is a doctor and you are not, then leave them to it - they know better than you.

WorraLiberty · 12/04/2020 23:14

I think it's really simple.

The Doc checks with her hand.

Child feels hot.

Doc grabs thermometer.

I'm a nurse and often feel my patient's skin with they look abit dodge. You can deffo feel it when someone has a temp, but then I obviously follow up with a thermometer and everything else we do!

Geepipe · 12/04/2020 23:29

I took dps temperature 2 weeks ago using my hand. i could tell straight away when he had a temperature using my hand. Especially as nhs advice is feel chest and back for a temp. Drs only take my temp with a thermometer now as i tend to not feel hot on the outside when i have a temp yet the thermometer sometimes confirms i have a high temp and infection.

Tunnocks34 · 12/04/2020 23:30

I always do hand to the chest with my son. Of it feels hot I take temp.

CallarMorvern · 12/04/2020 23:32

DD was ambulanced to hospital after having a fit at nursery, apparently her temperature was high, I said to the doctor that she hadn't felt hot and the doctor said touch was no indication of temperature. I've used a thermometer ever since.

Deadringer · 12/04/2020 23:34

I would expect a dr. to use a thermometer but i always use my hand.

BilboBercow · 12/04/2020 23:35

I use my hand on dds forehead first. If she feels hot I'll check with a thermometer

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2020 23:38

I've always checked for a temperature with a hand on the forehead, and confirmed with a thermometer if necessary.

Notdonna · 12/04/2020 23:46

I’m a paediatric nurse but on my own 4 kids I have never used a thermometer... back of the neck tells me everything.

Notdonna · 12/04/2020 23:47

Forehead isn’t the best indicator tbh

Forehead isn’t the best indicator tbh

That might depend on the child.

Forehead was best for one of mine and hands (especially the backs) was best for the other. For some reason, his hands used to burn up so much, it felt really uncomfortable if he laid them on me.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/04/2020 23:58

@Pigeonpresent - I’m a nurse, and I have been using my hand to check dh’s temperature. Earlier on in the CV outbreak, I was having to do it on an hourly basis, when he’d take a break from whatever he was doing to go over his (unchanging and non-existant) symptoms, and to ask me to check his temperature.

I have to confess that, as the days went by, it became less and less of a gentle, ministering angel’s hand, and was developing impact. Luckily - for his long term survival prospects - we now have a thermometer, so he can measure (and obsess over) his temperature on his own - and he has developed a new obsession with the statistics, and how they are being reported. I get regular updates on that, now.

I yearn for the days of Brexit!

ItsGoingTibiaK · 13/04/2020 00:13

Don't worry, @Pigeonpresent, she gets the thermometer out later in the stock photoshoot!

(And in a major plot twist, she then gets changed and pretends to be the boy's mother so she can get a second opinion on the temperature reading.)

@ItsGoingTibiaK thank you! Lol! Such a worrying time, but at least we don’t se the doc doing the kiss test!
