Amazon Delivery Drivers

PennyGold · 12/04/2020 14:40

I've just had an Amazon Delivery driver ask to be let in our building (block of flats) so he could leave a parcel outside the neighbours door.
Why are they working on Easter Sunday?! I really thought Christmas and Easter were the only two days of the year where everything closed.
I felt so sorry for him! I looked out the window and he had a car full (and I mean couldn't see out the back window) of parcels.
I know he may get the option to work or not on Easter Sunday, but it baffles me why there can't be a few days of everything being closed.
Shame on Amazon.

It isn’t a holiday in all of the uk. Shops in Scotland are still open! (Well, supermarkets this year.)

Parker231 · 12/04/2020 14:44

People want deliveries regardless of the date so I don’t see a problem.

SlipSlidin · 12/04/2020 14:44

Loads of workplaces don’t observe it, it’s a relatively new holiday in Scotland.

🤷‍♂️ Easter, like Christmas, has lost it's religious connection to many, and is largely a festival of consumerism. I can't see too many people being fussed about a delivery driver working Easter Sunday. We celebrate the spring, rather than the Christian meaning of Easter, but I don't really see that the whole country needs to come to a standstill to allow one religion to celebrate.

MagnoliaJustice · 12/04/2020 14:57

I've had an email saying my item will be delivered this afternoon - they work all days of the week. I have an Easter egg ready to give him - I bought Easter eggs for my entire family before lockdown and I seriously don't want to be bariatric by the time it's all over by eating all of them myself Wink

JoExotic · 12/04/2020 14:58

Easter is a Christian holiday. It's the most important holiday of the Christian calendar. Do you usually go to church at Easter OP? If you're not a practicing Christian I don't think you can be outraged that someone who, more than likely, isn't a Christian either, is working.

JoExotic · 12/04/2020 15:00

Do you also feel the same when you see people delivering at Diwali, Passover, Eid and other religious festivals?

PennyGold · 12/04/2020 15:01

I was raised Catholic which is probably why I hadn't realised that others don't celebrate Easter, or don't have an issue with delivery drivers working etc.
What a lovely thing to do @MagnoliaJustice but I think you should at least eat half of the ones you bought! It'd make me feel better for eating 2 already.

Easter is not a big deal. To most, its a time to eat chocolate and has no real significance.

The majority of shops, restaurants and working environments are open during Easter.

JoExotic · 12/04/2020 15:10

I was raised a Christian and also attended a Roman Catholic primary school . It doesn't make me ignorant to other religions or non religious people. I have always been aware that not everyone celebrates Christian holidays. I'm quite confused by that comment actually, unless you have led a very very sheltered life.

Winniewonka · 12/04/2020 15:14

I thought the majority of places were always CLOSED on Easter Sunday, like Christmas Day to enable staff who are religious to attend church. Staff who aren't get to spend time with their families. Until about 30 years ago, almost everywhere was closed on Sunday during the daytime. Cinemas, restaurants would open in the evening.

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 12/04/2020 15:27

We had our bins emptied today.

Parker231 · 12/04/2020 15:27

The delivery services near us (central London) are open today. Many restaurants have been enterprising and are now delivery services. We’ve had lunch delivered from the deli we usually go to on a Sunday.

Are you always so insular ?

Rhianna1980 · 12/04/2020 15:34

I can confirm that amazon delivery drivers are working today. I had a confirmation for a delivery for today for something i ordered weeks ago. You would have hoped/thought they would be given today off. I’m not in rush for my item....

PennyGold · 12/04/2020 15:42

No I'm not "always so insular" @bettybattenburg but as the majority of the population of England identify as Christian, I would have thought that people were entitled to Easter Sunday off work.
To those that aren't Christian, is a day off work to spend with family so horrible? Also, are you always so unpleasant?
I agree @Rhianna1980 I imagine the vast majority of people would be willing to wait an extra day to receive a delivery, so that the delivery drivers could get the day off.

People get days off work to spend with their family if they have one.

user1471517900 · 12/04/2020 15:49

I was raised female which is probably why I hadn't realised other people don't have periods. Grin

SlipSlidin · 12/04/2020 15:54

A lot of companies just “float” all the public holidays now, it’s become a bit of an irrelevance when you’re off.

Scotland historically had local holidays which meant the whole country didn’t close on one given day.

It was nice when I was younger if Edinburgh had a day off you could drive to another city or town and everywhere was open.

Parker231 · 12/04/2020 15:57

I’d prefer it if you could take the ‘bank holidays’ on a date of your choosing rather than the set dates.

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 15:58

Easter is meaningless to most people

Its actually a pagan festival, but like Christmas has been snaffled by the Christian faith

Zaphodsotherhead · 12/04/2020 16:15

I work in a small supermarket. This is ALWAYS open - we shut Christmas day and only Christmas day, and have for years and years.

We STILL get people coming in asking if we will be open at Easter. Even locals who should get it by now...

We wish we didn't, it would be lovely to have the whole of Easter off, but we'd only have to take it as holiday or unpaid. We don't get paid extra for working BH either.

RishiSunakFanClub · 12/04/2020 16:20

I'm sure the driver is just happy to have a job and earning money. I had an Amazon delivery last week which was delivered by a local taxi driver, his car was filled to the brim with parcels and I would guess he is happy to have the opportunity to keep working.

A majority of the population may enter their religion as Christian on census papers but the reality is somewhat different with dwindling church attendance. I hear Jedi is becoming a popular choice [grin)

plunkplunkfizz · 12/04/2020 16:22

as the majority of the population of England identify as Christian, I would have thought that people were entitled to Easter Sunday off work.

People may “identify” as Christian but they evidently don’t believe strongly enough that it stops them shopping, eating out and going to attractions on Easter Sunday and all those wants have to be serviced by some other people.
