To think MN should drop the idea of a two-tier system?

AIBU is particularly infested with trolls, I think this will only make it worse.

The trolls will pay for the premium membership so that they don't get banned and non paying people that don't want to risk their privacy or can't afford it will suffer.

I think anyone that isn't a troll should just join mums.chat as it shows real potential

I will counsel again, that the ownership of that site is not transparent, and there isn't going to be a namechange facility which could trip up any poster who is in a vulnerable position.

1984isnow · 13/04/2020 14:38

A while ago, MN posted a thread asking which additonal features posters wanted the most. I am sure they said at the time they were 'planning some changes', so wanted input. I don't think any of the suggestions were implemented (edit was no1 iirc) so maybe they were asking for ideas with a subscription fee in mind, already.

ItsLateHumpty · 13/04/2020 18:33

What’s with the mums.chat deletions? I read (and post) here mainly, but with the modding rules, and begging threads I’m looking at spinster.xyz and mums.chat and the reddit sub forum.

MN I recognise and thank you for all you’ve shown me, unfortunately your ban hammer, mis sexing, and now asking for subs means I’m looking at other providers.

Hadnt heard of mums.chat before this thread (sheltered life!) but just clicked on it and they have even used the same colour as mumsnet for their background, and the 2 main topics were..."AIBU to be happy to have escaped from MN"/"AIBU to hope that MN dies" Smile

Why would you bother to go to another site thats main point seems to be to talk about and copy the original? Hmm

RishiSunakFanClub · 14/04/2020 17:40

There are 150 other threads on varying subjects so hardly the main point. If quoting posts, editing, coloured text, dark screen, lots of smilies, no ads, etc isn't for you - your choice.

gamerchick · 14/04/2020 17:53

were..."AIBU to be happy to have escaped from MN"/"AIBU to hope that MN dies

Ooo good. Let's hope all the MRAs bugger off there then.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 14/04/2020 18:12

I dislike the fact that maybe a struggling mum or gran on limited income could feel like second rate somehow due to being unable to pay ..no 2 teir system works fairly.

Makeitgoaway · 14/04/2020 18:15

I think it may have a significant affect on the demographic here but not necessarily in the way people imagine. My more intelligent/educated friends know to avoid all those small subscriptions that add up quickly. The ones with more money than sense, often from high earning husbands, less so.

IamRhubarbBikini · 14/04/2020 18:18

They don’t sell content to the DM

You’re right they don’t “sell” content but their PR’s definitely pitch stories in to the tabloids. I’m surprised at the sheer number of people who believe otherwise tbh.

Skittlesss · 14/04/2020 18:22

Gin some sour grapes on this thread... it’s like when you were a kid and everyone had a chopper, but your mum wouldn’t let you... so you told yourself that choppers were crap.

Anonuser1 · 14/04/2020 18:30

That site has no Ads yet. Do you think the owner has set it up out of the goodness of her heart?

PleaseStopCrying · 14/04/2020 18:38

Do you think the owner has set it up out of the goodness of her heart?

I think it was originally set up to show just how easy it was to create a site with all the trappings that MNHQ were propsing to give only premium members access to such as quoting and an edit function etc. I think its an interesting discussion that MNHQ are asking for money when they pay some of their monthly 350k wage bill to people to create and maintain elements of this site when its clear every element of MN is basic and it can be replicated and improved upon so easily if they wanted to.

Anonuser1 · 14/04/2020 18:46

You don't think the owner makes any money out of her other site then?

Post where you like, just have a bit of a think about the real reason it was set up.

Pinkblueberry · 14/04/2020 18:49

The price they expect is frankly bonkers. It’s £1 more for subscriptions like Amazon prime and Netflix. I like using MN but there’s no way it benefits my family and I like those sites do.

It is completely bonkers. I dip in and out, mainly because I’m a bit bored. I stopped again around Christmas time and have only come back on because of coronavirus to kill a bit of time. No way would I pay £5 😂 anyone who is willing to pay this either has plenty of cash to spare or should really make an effort to get back into the real world and have a phone/ internet detox.

"3) It's just running on open source (i.e. free) software, and just out of the box allows all the feature that have proved "too hard" for MN with it's team of dedicated (and highly paid) developers hmm"

its; probably because the software running this forum is custom built...15 odd years ago and is probably ball ache to actually implement any major changes.

Or the 12 strong developer team (!!!) are bullshitting MNHQ

I really really REALLY don't see how they need a 12 member dev team...

What do they even do??

CodenameVillanelle · 14/04/2020 18:53

MNHQ never said that quote and edit were 'too hard' afaik. They are features that the majority of members when polled said they didn't want. Mumsnet is different to other chat sites and part of that is no quote function (keeps conversation flowing and the interface clean and tidy) and no edit (being accountable for what you post)

I don't want an edit function and if I get it I won't use it.

PleaseStopCrying · 14/04/2020 18:58

They are features that the majority of members when polled said they didn't want.

I thought everytime they asked these were actually the most requested changes? I've certainly seen them asked for multiple times over the years I've been here and its always been with a positive reaction from the majority that they would improve the forums.

Whenever the question of Quote and Edit features were raised on here the majority of users didn't want them. I was always in favour of an edit button but I was in the minority.

Quite why everyone wants them now is baffling.
