To think MN should drop the idea of a two-tier system?

AIBU is particularly infested with trolls, I think this will only make it worse.

The trolls will pay for the premium membership so that they don't get banned and non paying people that don't want to risk their privacy or can't afford it will suffer.

OP posts:

Why are they doing this? Are they losing advertising revenue?

Haven’t you noticed the lack of adverts?

DrDreReturns · 12/04/2020 22:05

No can't say I have! I tend to block them out.

maternityclothes · 12/04/2020 22:06

If we're paying will mn stop selling the content we create to the tabloids?
This is the beginning of the end for me on this site, I've been here about 6 years.

Noconceptofnormal · 12/04/2020 22:06

If a website with 25 million users can't make enough money from ad revenue then there's something hugely wrong with their business model.

My feeling is that they've been wanting to move to a subscription model for a while and are now using covid as an excuse.

Agree £5/month is the wrong price point when you compare to netflix, disney+. If it was £1-2 then maybe I'd consider it but £5 is too high.

They're bring naive to think that something else wouldn't spring up in its place but may be more niche-y, eg a forum that just discusses education for example.

In fairness this would be a good feature, if it guaranteed your OP wouldn't end up in the daily mail.

DrDreReturns · 12/04/2020 22:09

I did read somewhere that the anti trans reputation the site has might affect advertising revenue. Idk if that is true though.

Can't say I have, no Grin

Aquicknamechange2019 · 12/04/2020 22:11

I'm happy to consider paying something but I'm not paying the same price as Disney+, which is a platform my whole family can use, as opposed to a single log in to a website.

Bagadverts · 12/04/2020 22:15

On mods not having information about premium surely editing function just completely negates that. Not editing means may or may not be premium but editing takes away doubt. Wouldn’t need to be on that thread if the mod remembers the name.

RishiSunakFanClub · 12/04/2020 22:19

LochJessMonster
Mums.chat looks like a low budget mumsnet.
All those saying it’s better because ‘no ads’ and ‘no trolls’ need to give it time!

I laughed when I read your post and find it difficult to believe you have even looked at Mums.Chat, I suggest you go back for a real look. It's fast, has no ads, the ability to quote a post, edit your own post, easy search, a multitude of emotes, colour text, dark screen, +++ none of which are available on this forum. So what's low budget about it - I would love to know.

Holdingmybreath · 12/04/2020 22:21

I can't join as it's not available on android,I mainly use it on my phone so no point.

CodenameVillanelle · 12/04/2020 22:25

Yes, they are losing ad revenue
I use mumsnet a lot. I'm not well off but I'm happy to pay £5 a month while we are on lockdown. I'll cancel in a few months when things are more normal but I'd rather that than have the site go bust. It's a temporary measure.

TildaKauskumholm · 12/04/2020 22:39

Just looked at mums.chat on my android phone...

SpillTheTea · 12/04/2020 22:42

Why are mentions of mums.chat being deleted MNHQ?

thewinkingprawn · 12/04/2020 22:49

Blimey mums.chat is a total rip off of Mumsnet (and I recognise a lot of the user names from some prolific posters on this site too!). Can’t have been going long given lack of content but still....

Murphs1 · 12/04/2020 22:51

I think mums.chat would be a good alternative looking at the site. I think mumsnet is great but I wouldn’t pay for it.

CodenameVillanelle · 12/04/2020 22:52

Mums.chat is just moldies 2.0. It's not going to stick around.

MintyMabel · 12/04/2020 22:53

They clearly said mods won’t have that info in front of them and that it won’t show to other users.

And you believe that?

MintyMabel · 12/04/2020 22:54

Rather happy with the ban hammer too as I understand it.

thewinkingprawn · 12/04/2020 22:55

Having had a further look mums.chat does just seem to be old posters from here saying how much they dislike Mumsnet. Very dull.

MintyMabel · 12/04/2020 22:55

Haven’t you noticed the lack of adverts?

I’m seeing more ads than I saw previously, especially on the app. Only since the announcement of premium, though.

inappropriateraspberry · 12/04/2020 23:06

I suggested on another thread that maybe they should charge for the app versions. I think more people would pay a one off fee than the equivalent of £60 a year (if monthly). Surely there are lots of new members downloading it still?
It's a ridiculous amount of money to ask for just a couple of 'extras.'

LastTrainEast · 12/04/2020 23:21

Paying for a year when I can be banned with no refund? I'll pass.

SpillTheTea · 13/04/2020 00:28

@LochJessMonster It makes mumsnet look basic and bland with the amount of features they have, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 13/04/2020 00:51

They have only been running a couple of days- how many have they banned?
