Interesting (first heard by me on BBC World Service last night)

www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/05/04/world/europe/04reuters-health-coronavirus-france.html

(I didn't know that sushi was Chinese, but I suppose in a supermarket it may be.)

It may not help a lot: the Chinese reported unknown-cause pneumonia cases to the WHO on 31st December 2019 and closed the seafood market associated with them on 1st January 2020, identified the new virus on 7th January and shared shared the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus so that every other country in the world could start to identify and combat it on 12th January. The virus being present in France on 27th December, before the Chinese had even discovered that it existed or identified their first cases, is decidedly strange.

Anniegetyourgun, I don't think it can have a hopeful ending, apart possibly from Trump's being unable to speak continuing indefinitely.

President erupts at George Conway for ‘Mourning in America’ video, about the ‘deadly virus Trump ignored’
www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/05/trump-george-conway-coronavirus/

George T. Conway III, prominent attorney and husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, has been trying with only modest success to provoke President Trump’s Twitter wrath for the better part of his presidency. He finally succeeded close to 1 a.m. Tuesday.
What set Trump off was a video, sponsored by the Lincoln Project, the anti-Trump Super-PAC that Conway co-founded with other Republicans and former Republicans. The video, released Monday, lays responsibility squarely at Trump’s doorstep for the severity of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, including the deaths and economic damage.
Tens of thousands nationwide have died from the “deadly virus Trump ignored,” says the video, called “Mourning in America,” inspired by former president Ronald Reagan’s famous “Morning in America” 1984 campaign ad.
...
Trump responded at 12:46 a.m. Tuesday, firing off a string of tweets attacking those associated with the Lincoln Project as “LOSERS” before turning his wrath on Conway.
“I don’t know what Kellyanne did to her deranged loser of a husband, Moonface,” Trump tweeted, “but it must have been really bad.”

It was only a matter of time. Sad

Three people charged in killing of Family Dollar security guard over mask policy
www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/04/security-guards-death-might-have-been-because-he-wouldnt-let-woman-store-without-mask/

A Family Dollar store security guard was fatally shot in Flint, Mich., on Friday after telling a customer her child had to wear a face mask to enter the store, the prosecutor’s office said.
The argument began when the security guard, Calvin Munerlyn, 43, told Sharmel Lashe Teague, 45, that customers needed to wear face masks in the store, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said at a news conference Monday. She yelled at him, spit on him and drove off, Leyton said. About 20 minutes later, her car returned to the store, and her husband and her son, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23, stepped out and confronted Munerlyn, according to investigators who spoke to witnesses in the store and reviewed surveillance video. Bishop pulled out a gun and shot Munerlyn, Leyton said.
Leyton said Munerlyn was doing his job, protecting others and enforcing a statewide executive order. In Michigan, people are required to wear face coverings in grocery stores. Stores can refuse service to anyone who isn’t wearing a mask.
“We simply can’t devolve into an ‘us versus them’ mentality,” he said. “We need to make a commitment as a community to do the things necessary to allow us to stay healthy and turn a page on this crisis together. Not for ourselves but for Calvin Munerlyn, who lost his life needlessly and senselessly.”
Michigan State Police arrested Sharmel Teague but are searching for the two men, Special 1st Lt. David Kaiser said.
All three are charged with first-degree premeditated murder and gun charges. Larry Teague is additionally charged with violating the mandate requiring people wear face coverings inside grocery stores, which is a misdemeanor, Leyton said.

Nice one George, keep on poking that bear with ya stick 🤭😁

B1rdbra1n · 05/05/2020 12:42

I wonder what made her feel entitled to administer capital punishment to the security guard, perhaps it was the site of Mike pence arrogantly not wearing a face mask in a medical setting
The people in power have given licence to this barbarism

I'm surprised there haven't been more 'covid' related shootings.

@B1rdbra1n You May well be right, and obviously Trump made it clear that he wouldn't be wearing a mask himself. He and Pence have shown such arrogance throughout this pandemic. It's been completely shocking to see.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/05/2020 15:45

Conway is half Filipino so just the usual little racist slur there from Trump.

(I read that GC dated Laura Ingraham before he married KellyAnne - so his life choices are a bit Hmm)

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/05/2020 16:12

Who is that masked man?

Trump suggests he will wear a mask in tour of production facility today
www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/05/coronavirus-update-us/?no_nav=true&tid=a_classic-iphone&p9w22b2p=b2p22p9w00098#link-LP6NY7PLOBFEZNAUJ37F6JTI7M

Trump suggested Tuesday that he would wear a face mask later in the day when he is scheduled to tour a Honeywell aerospace facility in Phoenix that is making respirator masks for health-care workers.
“I think it’s a mask facility, right? If it’s a mask facility I will, yeah,” Trump told reporters as he prepared to leave the White House en route to Arizona.
He later told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that he doesn’t anticipate leaving a mask on while he makes a speech.
There was an outcry last week after Vice President Pence chose not to wear a mask during a visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. — a decision he later said was a mistake. Pence’s choice violated the facility’s guidelines.
According to the White House, Trump, who has made no secret of his desire to resume travel around the country, will tour a mask production assembly line and deliver remarks at the Honeywell facility. He also plans to engage in a roundtable discussion about supporting Native Americans.
Aside from a visit to Camp David over the weekend, the trip will be Trump’s first outside Washington since March 28, when he traveled to Norfolk to see off the USNS Comfort, a Navy hospital ship that was deployed to New York. Trump is scheduled to return from Arizona in the evening.
Arizona is among the states that will be key to Trump’s reelection hopes. He carried the state over Democrat Hillary Clinton by less than four percentage points in 2016, and polls have shown a competitive contest this year against Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Better a moonface than a creosote face.

Trump the tiny speck

He is going to start to do some really really bizarre things 04:03 'Most events at the Lincoln Memorial are banned, but Interior Secretary David Bernhardt relaxed the rules, citing the 'extraordinary crisis' of the coronavirus so the president could hold a town hall there, according to reports'

On his way to Arizona. Says he will wear a mask if it is a mask factory, but not if it isn't.

BruceAndNosh · 05/05/2020 17:36

Any chance that the mask factory can provide him with a bespoke really tight fitting one?

BruceAndNosh · 05/05/2020 17:46

Trumps response to Bush's "unity" public message on Saturday consists of Donald whining about Bush not supporting him when he was in danger of being impeached, claiming that that was "partisan" when Bush was saying that now it not the time for partisan politcs.
Never occurs to TRump that Bush didn't support him becuase he didnt agree with Trump?

B1rdbra1n · 05/05/2020 17:56

I predict that hell will freeze over before he allows himself to be seen in a mask, I think he regards it as equal to waving a little white surrender flag.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/05/2020 19:34

Yes I agree - he will possibly wear one for a 2 second photo opp then nada.

Bush and his wife didn't vote for Trump in 2016; they left the bit for President blank and voted Republican on the rest of the paper. I expect that has rankled with Trump ever since.
