As I understand it (and that is a huge disclaimer as I am "scientifically challenged" in the brain department) research in bat transmitted viruses is an ongoing area of study and has been for some years - and yes, it's a particular interest of the Wuhan lab. Fauci's own interest/involvement in all things connected to infectious diseases, and allergy/immunology is to be expected of someone at the top of that ladder and of course he has received/approved grants etc to conduct research as all scientists/research labs do - and that would include research/interest in bat transmitted diseases.

Newsweek sound like they are stirring the pot hoping to find some shit - so not sure what their agenda is.

As an aside - there are some weird theories about Newsweek's ownership as well - if we're going down the conspiracy rabbit hole...

I agree that Trump has blood on his hands and just doesn't care that his political decisions are directly responsible for American people losing their lives to COVID-19, 63,000 now.

I've never wished anyone ill before, but it's tempting to think he deserves to die of COVID-19 himself. Just deserts and all that. But I can't do that. I have COVID-19 symptoms, I've had them for 8 weeks and I can't seem to get better. And in reality, I wouldn't wish them on anyone, not even Donald Trump,

But hopefully enough of his ardent supporters will see him for the narcissist he is and turn against him in their droves. A humiliating election defeat really would be just deserts.

BruceAndNosh · 03/05/2020 16:07

@Mittens030869 Maybe just a dose mild enough to survive but bad enough to not leave him enough breath to talk his usual bollocks?

lionheart · 03/05/2020 16:17

Hope you feel better soon Mittens. Flowers

@BruceAndNosh There's a thought, yes I'd be happy with that. Similar to what Boris Johnson went through would be just the thing. 🤣

Scrotus on Mt Rushmore? That'd be the same as chiseling in Lucifer next to Christ on Michelangelo's Pieta! But what do you want to bet he's got some photo-shopped 'mock up' of what it would look like tucked away somewhere. Probably given to him by Wm Barr.

But not much worse than him using the Lincoln Memorial as the backdrop for his Fox News 'Town Hall'. Lincoln will be spinning in his grave.

I'll do it for you. Not that he'll die, just that he'll be ill enough for long enough that Article 25 will be invoked.

Trump is exactly the kind of person to hanker after that kind of a monument.

(I always found the idea of Mount Rushmore to be quite repellent anyway.)

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/05/2020 19:18

Given that the Native American population has suffered from the 3rd largest virus outbreak in the US and that Mount Rushmore is on what was originally Sioux land, I don't think Trump's repulsive face will be very welcome there.

@AcrossthePond55 I think I'd go for that one. He should have some idea of what he's allowing people in his country to go through.

Thank you for your good wishes, OP. Smile

Are the high rates in Native American populations linked in any way with the casinos some reservations have, or is more an issue of rurality/poor health infrastructure? Casinos must be shocking for transmission of infections - close proximity of gamblers at tables, long exposures and transfer on chips or dice.

boatyardblues · 03/05/2020 20:40

Sorry - I can see the NPR article addresses the infrastructure issue.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/05/2020 20:52

All the Indian casinos in California are closed as (I suspect) they would be in most states with lockdown in effect. Many casinos here are staffed by non-native employees and are located in urban-ish areas that are not part of major reservations.

The issues with Native Americans are (IMO) a combination of poor health in general due to poverty and lack of resources & eduction. The rates of addiction, diabetes, and heart disease on the rez is sky high compared to the general US populations. Generally speaking healthcare on the more rural rez is also poor. Add in the fact that promised resources (ie money) promised the tribes as part of the Stimulus Bill have not yet been received by the tribes and it's no wonder the native communities are being decimated.

Given this isn't a normal election year - just when is Biden likely to announce his running mate? And as he's not actually the official Dem candidate yet - does that make a difference?

Warren is Democratic voters' top choice for Biden VP: poll
thehill.com/homenews/campaign/495875-warren-is-democratic-voters-top-choice-for-biden-vp-poll

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) ranks as Democratic voters' top choice for presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden's vice presidential pick, a CBS News poll released Sunday found.

Seventy-one percent of Democratic voters say Warren should be considered as a running mate, topping the list of potential female picks. Warren was followed by Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) at 59 percent, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams at 50 percent and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) at 49 percent.

The Massachusetts progressive also earned the top first-choice pick for the position, at 36 percent. Harris followed at 19 percent, ahead of Abrams at 14 percent and Klobuchar at 13 percent.

Warren won the vote among white Democrats and liberals by big margins. For black Democrats, she is among the top picks, although their votes are distributed between her, Abrams and Harris. The progressive also was one of the top three choices for moderate Democrats, along with Klobuchar and Harris.

Familiarity appears to play a role in the choices, as the three women who ran for president on the list, Warren, Klobuchar and Harris, rank in the top picks, CBS News noted.

The Massachusetts senator earned support among those who said economic expertise is an important factor and among those who believe Biden should choose a progressive running mate. Democratic voters rank economic expertise and crisis management as top qualities wanted in a vice presidential candidate.

A total of 55 percent of Democratic voters think Biden should make a "bold" choice in his vice presidential pick, while 45 percent say he should go with the "safe" option.

Biden has pledged to pick a woman as his running mate and on Saturday said his vice presidential selection committee is vetting "more than a dozen women."

In the poll, Biden leads Trump in a matchup, 49 percent to 43 percent.

The poll surveyed 2,200 U.S. residents between April 28 and May 1. The margin of error is 2.5 points.

Important for November.

Unexpected outcome in Wisconsin: Tens of thousands of ballots that arrived after Election Day were counted, thanks to court decisions
www.washingtonpost.com/politics/unexpected-outcome-in-wisconsin-tens-of-thousands-of-ballots-that-arrived-after-voting-day-were-counted-thanks-to-court-decisions/2020/05/03/20c036f0-8a59-11ea-9dfd-990f9dcc71fc_story.html

Early last month, voters in Wisconsin navigated a dizzying number of rule changes governing the state’s spring elections as officials tussled over the risks of the novel coronavirus, prompting a backlog of absentee ballot requests and fears that many would not be able to participate.
But in the end, tens of thousands of mail ballots that arrived after the April 7 presidential primaries and spring elections were counted by local officials, a review by The Washington Post has found — the unexpected result of last-minute intervention by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In Milwaukee and Madison alone, the state’s two largest cities, more than 10 percent of all votes counted, nearly 21,000 ballots, arrived by mail after April 7, according to data provided by local election officials.
...
What happened in Wisconsin has potentially far-reaching implications as the two parties square off in courtrooms across the country, hoping to notch legal victories that will shape the electorate in their favor before November.
Democrats think they have secured a game-changing precedent from the Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 order. In the past week alone, lawsuits bankrolled by Democratic committees have been filed in four states seeking similar postmark rules and citing the Wisconsin opinion to bolster their argument. More cases are expected in the coming week.

Republicans, meanwhile, say they are prepared to spend millions of dollars to oppose these efforts, arguing that extending ballot deadlines creates an opportunity for fraud. Some have also been open in their view that higher turnout could harm them politically. On March 30, President Trump said that if Democratic efforts to expand mail balloting succeeded, “you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

Fauci's days are truly numbered. I hope he lasts at least the worst of this wave.
But I expect he'll be out when numbers get down.

Trump's intellect is interesting. He is not the brightest star in the firmament but he's very sharp at making sure there is always someone else to blame

B1rdbra1n · 04/05/2020 12:14

I wonder about the extent to which he plays dumb, sometimes he uses very simple language and repeats the same terms over and over like a confabulating old man, other times he apparently spontaneously uses longer words.
Does he play dumb so as not to alienate his base?
And all the speculation about whether or not he can read to a normal adult standard?
