Trump can't just cancel the election.

This article sets out the various scenarios. Note, the last paragraph says "In the exceedingly unlikely event that the 2020 election is canceled, the result isn’t likely to be an extended term for President Trump. The most likely result is chaos."

B1rdbra1n · 23/04/2020 17:24

The most likely result is chaos
I think Trump would enjoy trying to use chaos for his own ends, he's shown that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, he will sink to any and all depths which seem to offer a way to save his hide

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 23/04/2020 17:35

He seems to be trying to start a shooting war with Iran, which would close the Straits and send the oil price back up.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/04/2020 18:06

The US Constitution 20th Amendment says that the President's & VP's 4 year terms end "at noon on the 20th day of January". So even if he managed to cancel the election (which won't happen) Scrotus would still be kicked out of office on Jan 20 2021. And since the VP term ends the same day that means that, according to the line of succession, Nancy Pelosi would be next in line. The GOP definitely doesn't want that to happen!

TheNorthWestPawsage · 23/04/2020 18:18

I read somewhere that Nancy's term also ends then and next in line after her - is Chuck Grassley!
(I hope I'm talking out of my arse...)

HoldMyLobster · 23/04/2020 18:35

I read somewhere that Nancy's term also ends then and next in line after her - is Chuck Grassley!

From the Vox article above - the paragraph after the one about Nancy's term ending says...

"But wait! Recall that the terms of many senators also expire on January 3. As it turns out, 23 seats held by Republicans and only 12 seats held by Democrats are up for election this year, so if no election is held, Democrats will have a majority in the Senate once these seats become vacant. Which would mean that Senate Democrats would be able to choose a new president pro tempore. If they follow the tradition of choosing the most senior member of their caucus, that would place Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) next in line for the presidency."

NorthWest love that phrase, haven't heard it for a long time, my dear old Mum used to say it when she was alive Smile

TheNorthWestPawsage · 23/04/2020 19:14

HoldMyLobster I hadn't read that one - Thank god for that! (Maybe they should cancel the election...)

A mis-step by Moscow Mitch?

McConnell takes flak after suggesting bankruptcy for states rather than bailouts

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) drew flak Thursday from governors in both parties after suggesting that states hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak should be allowed to seek bankruptcy protections rather than be given a federal bailout.
McConnell’s comments, made during a radio interview on Wednesday, came amid a renewed push from states for help from Washington to cover lost tax revenue that has been among the dire consequences of the ongoing pandemic.
“This is really one of the dumb ideas of all time,” New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) said during a briefing in Albany in which he warned that bankruptcy declarations by multiple states would lead to “a collapse of this national economy.”
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), chairman of the bipartisan National Governors Association, which has asked McConnell for $500 billion to help states deal with lost revenue, said McConnell “probably regrets saying that.”

I like the idea of him out and about amongst the infected idiots supporters who don't want to be locked down...

Giuliani doesn’t appear to understand that cancer etc. are not contagious. Does he actually believe that if he sat near an obese man at the theatre he might suddenly become grossly fat? No. He’s politically point-scoring, awkwardly.

Medical experts denounce Trump's latest 'dangerous' suggestion to treat Covid-19
Doctors warn president’s musings on disinfectant as a cure for coronavirus could lead to death
www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/23/trump-coronavirus-treatment-disinfectant?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Donald Trump has stunned viewers by suggesting that people could receive injections of disinfectant to cure the coronavirus, a notion one medical expert described as “jaw-dropping”.

At Thursday’s White House coronavirus task force briefing, the US president discussed new government research on how the virus reacts to different temperatures, climates and surfaces.

“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute,” Trump said. “One minute! And is there a way we can do something, by an injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that. So, that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.”

Dr Deborah Birx, the task force response coordinator, remained silent. But social media erupted in hilarity and outrage at the president, who has a record of defying science and also floated the idea of treating patients’ bodies with ultraviolet (UV) light.

Several doctors warned the public against injecting disinfectant or using UV light.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/04/2020 08:27

Out of the rabbit-hole and into the sun. He wants to inject everyone with bleach.

Coming to take him away, ha-hah!

BruceAndNosh · 24/04/2020 08:31

Trump is now suggesting "treatments" that are not just dubious but downright dangerous.
The scientists produced a slide about what can weaken or kill the virus OUTSIDE the body. Isopropyl alcohol and bleach were mentioned.
He comes out with this stinger
"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?"
Idiot,. There will be some daft devotees who will kill themselves drinking bleach.
There's already been a fatality from a couple who ingested fish tank cleaner containing chloroquine

chomalungma · 24/04/2020 09:07

I notice Fox news is missing the report on what Trump said about disinfectants.

Maybe they should point out that you shouldn't drink or inject them

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 24/04/2020 09:11

"There's been a rumor that you know, a very nice rumor that you go outside in the sun or you have heat and it does have an effect on other viruses," Trump said, before asking coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx "to speak to the medical doctors to see if there's any way that you can apply light and heat to cure, you know, if you could."

Trump then asked Birx if she "ever heard of the heat and the light" having an impact on viruses. She responded, "Not as a treatment," before Trump asked her again to look into it.

PerkingFaintly · 24/04/2020 09:35

Shock Dear lord. Your Koolaid reference is spot on, TheNorthWest. It's like some distributed Jim Jones effect.

Birx presumably didn't dare speak up on the platform, because of course he'd sack her or at least reassign her.

As if Covid19 weren't horror enough, this will add more horror.Sad
