My baby is huge?!

Tjsmumma · 11/04/2020 11:01

AIBU - No my baby wasnt big for age
YABU - Yes my baby was big.

My EBF DD is 4 months next week, is 18.8lbs (98th percentile)!

She was 6lb 12oz at birth. She has a head circumference of 42.5 which puts her at 90th percentile and her length of 63cm puts her at 75th percentile.

So on average a big baby all round and quite in proportion, she is in 6-9 month clothes already in most of the bits and pieces and my aunt has a baby whos 6 months whos only just in those clothes!

Now im a bit worried something may infact be wrong or something is wrong with my milk considering she's so big for her age!

Every time shes been weighed shes been around 75th upwards but this is a big jump up!

Am i worrying for no apparent reason or has anyone elses babies nearly tripled their birth weight by 4 months? She never lost any weight in the first five days and put it on, should i not be feeding her on demand etc? Or am i thinking way to much into it?

You can’t over feed a breastfed baby so it sounds like it’s the way she’s meant to be :)

Ohhgreat · 11/04/2020 11:05

Your baby is thriving - be proud!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/04/2020 11:06

Stop worrying! I take it your 're breastfeeding? Then you can't overfeed her. Sounds like you're doing a great job!

My ds1 was HUGE. Used to put on a pound a week on. Very long too, consistently on the 99.6th centile for height and weight. He's 20 now and 6 foot 7 and very slim with massive hands and feet!

Whatsmyname26 · 11/04/2020 11:06

Mine were also huge and ebf. Both are super slim now at 9 and 13

NC2020 · 11/04/2020 11:08

Nah my 3 month ebf is also massive, she's on the 92nd centile. I love her chubby thights and tummy! You're doing amazing!

CoughKeepsOnComing · 11/04/2020 11:10

DS1 was average weight when born (i think he was about 7lbs), but sky rocketed to 98th percentile for weight (50th for height) within first few weeks/months and stayed there til age 2 ish when they start to walk! It was then a slow and steady reduction til age 5 when he hit around 50th centile.

Since age 5 I'd say he's been between 30th and 60th centiles for weight depending on how active he is. He doesn't stop moving so he's normally a little under 50th centile. He's 8 now and continues to eat roughly double what I do! He always had a very strong appetite (which was exhausting when breastfeeding!!)

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about baby weight! Mine was so chubby around 4months!! He's so lean now!!

Ds2 has always been around the 75th centiles for height and weight. He's never really moved off his lines!

They are all different!!

As long as you start to notice a reduction once baby becomes a toddler and starts moving alot, around age 2/3 ish, your little one will be just fine!!!

Umnoway · 11/04/2020 11:10

You can’t overfeed a breastfed baby. Mine were all big breastfed babies in at least one size above in clothing. They’re all tall now but not fat. My DD’s head was off the centile chart Grin, she still has a sizeable head now...

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 11/04/2020 11:12

You can overfeed a bf baby, it's nonsense to say you can't. I did it to DS1. He was 7lb 6oz at birth then took off like a rocket. We were in hospital for a week and he was more than 8lb when we went home. He was placid, easy, slept through from 6 weeks 11pm to 5am and greedy. The HV kept saying she couldn't understand it.

He was a head taller than every kid in his class until he was 14 and they started to catch up. He's 6ft 1 now and 16/17 stone. There's no history on either side of the family to indicate that he should be that size. If anything, we're on the small side.

Everything I've read suggests that he's tall and big as a result of overfeeding, not genetics.

Keep an eye on it OP, try weighing her before and after a feed to see how much she's taking. There's not much you can do about it, other than bear it in mind. You'll have more control once she's weaned.

Tjsmumma · 11/04/2020 11:13

@forevercurious thats what i was told but wasnt sure if she was eating way too much lmao!

@ohhgreat - thank you! I shall! Just was worried about her being too big!

@Bigearringsbigsmile i know 🙈 im such a, worrier! Had people made it out like it was a problem as she was bigger than others! Yes, exclusively breast fed, oh wow! Makes me feel a bit better as it seems normal! She's not like real chunky, slender tummy just chunky thighs and legs!

@Whatsmyname26 ah thank you! I was a big baby 9lb 2 at birth, now 5"11 and 55kgs so!

@nc2020 thank you! As do i 😻 just wondered if it was normal or if she was just giant for her age!!

brachiosaurusdance · 11/04/2020 11:14

I really wouldn’t worry about it op. My babies were both huge. One of mine had to have constant checks as he was jaundice for ages and we were fortunate enough to keep having the same paediatrician when we had to go and get him checked and every time he weighed him he was flabbergasted that he was breastfed and gaining huge amounts of weight. He said he’d never seen that much weight gain in a bottle fed baby before and wasn’t worried in the slightest. My one year old is still a giant, not fat just a giant frame and wears aged 3-4 clothes. Love big squishy babies Grin

olivesandpecans · 11/04/2020 11:18

Both my ds and dd were 98th centile and have remained so ever since (ebf both). My ds is in age 8 clothing and is 6. My dd is in age 4 and is 2 but both are extremely tall. (dh is 6ft 6.). The HV has been happy throughout and does not feel either are overweight. Currently 34 weeks with ds2 and he’s on the 93rd centile according to my growth scans. I’ve just resigned myself to being the short one in the family. Smile

Wetfloortiles · 11/04/2020 11:21

Don't worry at all. My first born was only 6lbs at birth . She very quickly piled on weight and became a huge (fat as well!!) baby. However by the time she was at school, suddenly she was one of the shortest, small built and she still is a really petite (she's now 14)

One of my other daughter's was tiny at birth (5lbs) and stayed on the 0.4th centile and age 8 is still in the 0.4th centile.

They're all so different!

Tjsmumma · 11/04/2020 11:21

@CoughKeepsOnComing thank you!! Yes shes always followed her centile line but was just amazed by how big she is now! I know all babies are different just crazy to see it in practice! I know a 1 year old whos only 15lbs. Im hkoing when she gets moving she'll slow! She's not really fat on her belly, its nice and slender, just chubby legs and arms!

@JosephineDeBeauharnais Thank you, to be fair, i read that they wont feed if not needed due to the amount of effort and muscles they use to feed. She often spits up if shes fed due to wanting comfort so i assume she didnt need it if that makes sense? Me and DP were over 9lb at birth and i was a huge baby! Im now 5"11 and 55kgs. But, thank you! I'll definitely keep an eye and see :)

@brachiosaurusdance - she sounds exactly the same! We had lots of check ups and i took her to be weighed etc and she neber lots a thing, always gained and they were always amazed but never concerned about it! She's definitely not fat, slender skinny tum just big squashy legs and arms! Nice to see so many others say the same!

Nothing to worry about at the moment as she’s EBF but you will need to be very careful during weaning. Babies at the top centiles can become obese quickly when overfed after weaning - as what happened to DC’s girls. Can you get a dietician referral? I have as my DS has similar height and head circumference measurements as your DD but only ways 12 pounds (so 2nd centile) -my pediatrician said they give referrals to babies at either end of the growth chart so you might get one.

Wetfloortiles · 11/04/2020 11:22

Also, people LOVE to comment on a babies size constantly. I had it with both my big baby, and my tiny one. I even had it with my others who were 50th centile Envy

Jollypolly999 · 11/04/2020 11:22

My DD was always 98th percentile in the early years, she is now 7 and shes 75th percentile but doesnt look it - very tall and slim, athletic so she burns it off.

Dont worry, it will all even out!!!

Fuckyoumenopause · 11/04/2020 11:24

My DS2 was exactly 10lb at birth... born almost 4 weeks early! He turned 3 just before Christmas and is in age 4-5 clothes already and has size 10 feet.

Jellycatfox · 11/04/2020 11:25

My EBF baby is huge too. Wearing clothes my other one wore much later... so heavy.
But happy, healthy and feeding on demand. All good.

userabcname · 11/04/2020 11:25

DS1 was ebf and went up to the 98th centile from being born on the 75th. At the 6 week check the GP couldn't believe he was only 6 weeks and said he will make a great rugby player one day! He's nearly 3 and slimmed down to the 50th centile now.

DS2 is also ebf and nearly 6 months. He tracks between the 25th and 50th centile. They are all different!

Dessicator · 11/04/2020 11:33

My baby ( now an adult) was 13.5 lbs at birth . I wasnt diabetic or anything. The doctor asked the nurse if she was leaning on the scales. Everyone wanted to come and stare. Shes absolutely normal size now.
My other baby had a huge head which everyone showed concern ignoring the fact their dad couldnt get hats big enough.

CatFaceCats · 11/04/2020 11:37

My son was 3 weeks early and only 6lb. Then he shot straight up to the 98th centile within about 8 weeks. He’s 8 now and still up there. He’s definitely a sturdy child, a completely different build to his 9 year old sister who has always been on the 20th centile.

autumnmum · 11/04/2020 11:38

Both mine were huge and have turned into huge teens/tweens My DS was 5kg at birth and has never been on the growth chart for height (over 99th centile). Just as somebody has got to be the smallest, somebody else has to be the biggest. My DD has stopped growing and she is 5ft 10. DS has a long way to go but is 5ft 6 at age 12.

Treaclepie19 · 11/04/2020 11:40

Mine was the same. Formula fed so I felt even more worried that I was overfeeding.
He was 6lbs 15oz at birth and went down to 6lbs 10oz. He was the same, jumped up to 98th centile and above.
He's still tall and broad now despite barely eating now he's a picky 4yo 😂

Namechangervaver · 11/04/2020 11:46

Both my exclusively breast fed babies piled on the weight. For example my first lost an ounce in the first week when I understand they're meant to lose 6 or 7, then piled on a full pound a week for weeks and weeks. Grin

They're both slim teenagers now, so it didn't affect them.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 11/04/2020 11:46

DD was EBF and has always been in clothes at least 2 ages above her chronological age.

She's 10 now, wears age 13-14 clothes and about 156 cm and size 6 feet.

The only negatives of her being tall is clothes and shoes are getting expensive. She also developed something called Severs Disease, it isn't really a disease but occurs in tall active children because their feet, heel and leg growth plate grow at slightly different rates. She'll grow out of it once she's fully grown, it causes pain when she walks and gives her tight hamstrings so we gave up on dance as it was high impact and she wasn't flexible enough and moved onto competitive swimming so low impact and generally a tall person's sport. Not something you need to worry about but keep it in mind once your child is walki g properly. I brushed her complaints away for years whenever she moaned about her feet hurting as I thought she just didn't want to walk Blush. It was only when I asked on here that another mum suggested it might be Severs.
