My baby is huge?!

Tjsmumma · 11/04/2020 11:01

AIBU - No my baby wasnt big for age
YABU - Yes my baby was big.

My EBF DD is 4 months next week, is 18.8lbs (98th percentile)!

She was 6lb 12oz at birth. She has a head circumference of 42.5 which puts her at 90th percentile and her length of 63cm puts her at 75th percentile.

So on average a big baby all round and quite in proportion, she is in 6-9 month clothes already in most of the bits and pieces and my aunt has a baby whos 6 months whos only just in those clothes!

Now im a bit worried something may infact be wrong or something is wrong with my milk considering she's so big for her age!

Every time shes been weighed shes been around 75th upwards but this is a big jump up!

Am i worrying for no apparent reason or has anyone elses babies nearly tripled their birth weight by 4 months? She never lost any weight in the first five days and put it on, should i not be feeding her on demand etc? Or am i thinking way to much into it?

Apologies for the Netmums link (if it works) I thought you might find this helpful.

Yo baba is a lightweight. Mine was 16.5lbs at 10 weeks. Even the paed called him ‘fatso’ in admiring tones. (Also ebf.) At 7/8 months he was just rolls of flesh. He’s 18 now and fit as a fiddle. You can watch every single muscle work. Grin

tooto · 11/04/2020 18:31

My daughter was born just over 3kg (around 25th percentile I believe). In four months, she had jumped to around 80th, by six or seven months she had reached 98th percentile. She is now just over 1.5 years and has dropped to around 70th. Has always been very active (exclusively breastfed also), started crawling at 6 months, cruising by 7 months and walking by her 1st birthday. She has a huge tummy by the end of the day and I can actually feel her calf muscles! She's not particularly tall (just under 50th).

My son followed a similar pattern in terms of birth weight and suddenly shooting up to 90th within half a year (EBF), but was/is on the taller side of average. By four years old, he dropped down to 60th for weight and 75-80th for height. All in all they can really change!

pinkdressinggown · 11/04/2020 18:34

My son was born 4 weeks early between the 1st and 2nd centile, but by 5 months was on the 99th - he was exclusively breastfed

Starlet29 · 11/04/2020 18:34

They say you can’t over feed a breast fed baby. My two were bottle fed though but they were chunky babies like this and they are perfectly healthy children now. They were born quite small but quickly gained weight but like I said completely healthy now and not overweight or anything. They lose it once they become active!

Namechangervaver · 11/04/2020 19:25

aw my DD was exactly the same bar putting on nearly half a pound in the first week and then steadily gained about 500/750grams every 1/2 weeks!

The little whopper! Grin
Honestly, you can't overfeed a breastfed baby...mother nature knows exactly what she's doing.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 11/04/2020 19:39

i had a massive sized baby that turned in to a massive toddler then child

now hes 5ft 3 size adult 6 shoe and 130 pounds in mens medium to large clothes, hes still only 9

from newborn he used to put on 2 - 3 pound per week(still do) and by 4 months weighed more than yours,he was always in clothes months then years ahead of what he "should be"

he was 10lb11 and 27 inches from birth(he was that big he got stuck)
hes always been very hungry and was on 11 oz a time from first bottle,by a week old i put him on extra hungry milk as his belly used to be rumbling from hunger

by 2 and half months was on 16 oz a time(a full bottle and half)every hour and half

i never measured by what weight he was just enough for the 16 oz

by 6 months i was going through 3-4 tubs of extra hungry milk per week so i put him on solids as well as cows milk

from then till now hes on pints and pints of whole milk per day and 10+ meals a day

i now know its because of disabilities as he has many separate diagnoses, hes never full and is always asking for food and drink

i never followed percentile as i opted out of hv services, i used to weigh and measure him myself

since day one ive had oh hes a big boy aint he?or people thinking hes older than his age

im 6ft myself and dads 5ft 6 so i wasnt going to have 4-5 pounders and 11-12 inch babies

thunderthighsohwoe · 11/04/2020 19:47

Mine was FF but had issues with reflux and hated milk so was tiny until about 4 months, when we weaned early, and she piled on the pounds like a champ. Was essentially a beach ball by 6 months, having gone from the 25th centile to the 75th. However, as soon as she started cruising at 10 months (never crawled) she dropped weight and now is pretty average. Lots of friends’ babies also porked up around this stage, and lost it all once on the move.

Lunafortheloveogod · 11/04/2020 20:02

My ebf boys the size my formula baby was at 9 weeks.. he’s not even a month old. Gained almost 500g by day 5 I believe Grin.

There was a difference in birth weights but less than 2lbs. Ds1 (formula boy) is now a bloody giant n build like a rugby player, born on the 5th and was just over the 75th at 9 months, some grow fast at the start and some sprout later according to my hv, granny and other random women.

I can say ds2 would happily live with the boob in his face, moved to expressing to check i was actually meeting his demands lol.

TheLongDarkBreakfastTime · 11/04/2020 20:20

Dd1 was born on 3rd centile - EBF, never lost any weight, whizzed up to the 75th centile and stayed there. I think she doubled her birth weight by three months and tripled it by six months. I just concluded that I produced gold top Grin

TheWordmeister · 11/04/2020 20:25

My first baby was a complete ball of lard. He was ebf and just got fatter and fatter. I on the other hand, got thinner and thinner Grin He was on the 98th centile and I used to be embarrassed stripping him off at the clinic to get weighed.

Anise7438 · 11/04/2020 20:44

My youngest was massive. Went off the chart. EBF. Clothes barely fit him.

He's a very very normal/average sized 4 year old. In fact 4/5 trousers fall down. Which is annoying as 3/4 are too short!!

goose1964 · 11/04/2020 20:48

My GP told me not to worry when my son was tracking high, he said you can't usually see any difference at 5, however my son continued to be enormously tall, he's six foot five now.

Merryoldgoat · 11/04/2020 20:49

Mine was just over 19lb at 16 weeks.

My baby is huge?!
Thefaceofboe · 11/04/2020 21:03

You can’t over feed a breastfed baby so it sounds like it’s the way she’s meant to be

Why can’t you? Genuinely intrigued, I haven’t got children yet.

GirlCalledJames · 11/04/2020 21:15

My son was premature and very tall but skinny when he was born. By the age of three months ebf he was on the 96th percentile. I lost two stone in the same amount of time. He put on weight so fast he looked like his skin would burst. He was so chubby people would ask to look at his legs in the supermarket, the rolls were immense.
Once he started crawling he toned up a lot and now that he’s walking there isn’t a roll in sight.

MsChatterbox · 11/04/2020 21:20

My son was born 75th centile and quickly leaped to 95th centile. He's 2.5 now and still 95th. He is so skinny but very tall. He was a very chubby baby though!

rosiejaune · 11/04/2020 22:05

Well the point of an average is that some babies are bigger, and some are smaller. There is a range of normal.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/04/2020 22:12

My twins are 4.months on Monda op, 4 weeks early. They're 75-91st percentile based on birth date and 91-98th adjusted. Bottle said so can't take credit. I have no idea if anyone is concerned because we've not seen a HV since 6 weeks

Floobydoodoo · 11/04/2020 22:14

My dd was enormous. Really fat!

She was ebf and though they say you can’t over feed them...with hindsight & another baby who fed completely differently (still ebf), I think she had reflux so fed a lot for comfort.

We had to be a bit mindful of snacks around 2 as she was still on the big side (90th percentile so just skirting overweight) and now at almost 8 still keep an eye on her weight but she’s slimmed right down, is very active & around 50th centile for height.

Floobydoodoo · 11/04/2020 22:14

Obviously not height. Weight.

Doilooklikeatourist · 11/04/2020 22:23

DS was 8-13 at birth , I don’t remember the weight he was at 4 months , however I remember he was 30 lb at a year old , ( not yet walking ) and 29 lb at 2 years old

Tjsmumma · 12/04/2020 07:37

@rosiejaune yes... Im quite aware thanks. 98th percentile is very close to not being normal.

emilybrontescorsett · 12/04/2020 07:44

My dd was a big baby, really long too. She's grown up now and is quite tall and very slim and toned with a really beach type toned/fit body.

Tjsmumma · 12/04/2020 07:44

@Thefaceofboe - i think its to do with the amount of effort and work it takes for them to feed. They use over 40 facial muscles to take the milk so its quite a job and tiring for them, once they are full they stop. We did a parent class and had an activity regarding milks, formula has 50% of something (cant remember what it is as v sleep deprived) abd BM a 100% of it, which has something to do with it also. You can over feed a baby breast milk from the bottle though. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/your-breastfeeding-questions/
themilkmeg.com/can-i-overfeed-my-breastfed-baby/

If you are planning on BF you may feel baby ksnt getting enough in first days and weeks as they as constantly on the boob, this is to increase your milk and get more of a supply for ttheir growing bodies! They will also cluster feed more during leaps and spurts! Also 😬 breastfeeding isnt just food, they nurse for many different reasons, hunger, thirsr, soothing, tired, anxious (as its their safe spot) pain relief, eye contact etc. Its difficult in the first weeks as its a bit sore but nipple cream and correct latch helps x
