To not believe toaster reviews when they don't fit a tidy slice of bread

OK my toaster has a nasty habit of fusing my electrics when I use it so looking for a replacement. Having to online shop for one because of CV as my 3 year old cannot function without spaghetti hoops on toast at least 3 times a week.

All the pictures show the toaster with that bloody half inch of bread sticking out the top as if they're proud of it! We all want evenly toasted top to bottom toast! Who is asking for toast that has a half inch top and bottom of undercooked crunchiness?

Please tell me that you can buy a four slice toaster that toast an entire slice (Tesco toasties thick cut loaf) at once without me having to keep flipping and turning it for about £50? I'm not asking the earth surely

I don’t get it either. It’s one of life’s big mysteries. Why aren’t toasters big enough? Why aren’t toasters taller? We have a long four slice one but just toast our bread on its side. So only do two slices at a time. But at least it toasts the whole slice in one go

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 11/04/2020 08:35

I want one of those toasters that they have in hotels - you know, the rotary ones.

When I win the euromillions, that’s what I’m rushing out to buy.

I don’t think this helps you at all, OP.

DGRossetti · 11/04/2020 08:44

We once cut out a piece of paper to take around shops to check the toaster could take a regular slice of bread.

We came home empty handed.

Eventually we discovered the cheapest own-brand toaster in Sainsburys of all places. It was called a 4-slice, but was really just a long 2-slice design. Just about took the bread.

I came to the conclusion that the most important thing in toaster design is the colour. Clearly looking coordinated in estate agent pictures is the role of the modern toaster.

Lordfrontpaw · 11/04/2020 08:46

I have to squidge my favourite fat bagels to get them in my toaster. It’s on its last legs anyway.

This is the worst thing ever. I was moaning that our new toaster doesn't take bread (Russell Hobbs) and my bf said you are supposed to out bread on its side! Which id never heard, but it does work. And does fit slices sideways without a bother.

UnFuckingAcceptable · 11/04/2020 09:16

This drives me insane.
WHY!!?!?!?!?

I cannot think of any other mass produced product where the dimensions are such that you cannot use it to make the thing it's designed for in one go.

Imagine if kettles needed boiling twice or microwaves, slow cookers, pans were so small you had to cook or heat things in two attempts.
It's the strangest thing.

Skippii · 11/04/2020 09:17

Mine fits bread fine. It's this one www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01C42NANA/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_inactive_ship_o0_img?psc=1&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Looks like they don't sell it now, bu there probably a new model

Mascotte · 11/04/2020 09:19

I can solve your problem! You need an Asda own brand one. Brilliant. The one that says it does big bread.

Mascotte · 11/04/2020 09:21

holy grail

Mascotte · 11/04/2020 09:21

Or maybe holy grill??

QuitMoaning · 11/04/2020 09:22

This was a game changer for me when I realised a few months ago. Now it works fine. Apart from always burning the bread so I do need a new one....

JADS · 11/04/2020 09:29

Turn the bread through 90 degrees. We bought a new toaster and I was gutted about the soft soggy bit at the top. Turning the bread was a game changer!

YangShanPo · 11/04/2020 09:33

I believe this is because in Britain we have unusual tall loaves compared to many countries which have squarer loaves and the toasters are generally standard for a lot of countries.

LakieLady · 11/04/2020 09:43

We buy bloomer bread from the bakers and we had no end of trouble finding a toaster with a wide enough slot to accommodate the bread.

Why do manufacturers assume that everyone buys bog standard sliced loaves, ffs?

The toaster we bought is several years old now and the switch is getting dodgy, so I daresay it won't be long before I have to start looking for a toaster with an extra wide slot again.

Dilbertian · 11/04/2020 09:44

I've managed not to need to replace my toaster for a few years now, but IIRC Which reviews include whether large slices of bread fit in the toaster.

Suze1621 · 11/04/2020 10:50

Another vote for Asda own brand for exactly this reason
.

Soconfusedandlost · 11/04/2020 10:56

The one I own is a particularly crap cheap asda own brand. Bought when I moved on a year ago as it was a bit of a rush. The slice holder (if that's what it's called) is narrower than it is tall so def can't turn the bread 90 degrees. Shall try all the links now for the world's best toaster

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 11:01

Ours is a cheap one too, and it fits most of the bread but not all. Before that we had a fancy Schmancy one that didn’t even make particularly good toast, on top of not fitting the whole slice. Next time we buy one it’s going to be one of those with the extra long 4-slice slot, so we can do the slices of bread lengthways instead.

Or you could do toast under the grill which comes out great but you have to watch it like a hawk otherwise it burns.

527040minutes · 11/04/2020 11:05

2 slices, but if you search for a warburtons toaster there's likely to be a 4 slice one out too.

LittleBearPad · 11/04/2020 11:07

We’ve just bought a new one as the old one fused the electrics. It won’t fit our bread (Jackson’s - really wide). We’re going to have to change our brand of bread. Too much faff to return it at the moment.

Dollywilde · 11/04/2020 11:08

This is mine. It’s expensive (was a present) but I love it. Have the matching kettle because I’m completely basic like that Grin

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 11/04/2020 11:09

We bought a swan 'long slot' toaster ,I love it, it takes naan breads, bagels, pitta. I think it was only about £25-£30 too

StCharlotte · 11/04/2020 11:11

"so we can do the slices of bread lengthways instead."

I first read that as "breadthways". Slightly disappointed now.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 11/04/2020 11:15

I can confirm as an owner of the asda one linked - it fits warbies in just lovely! Never any soggy bits!

(I also spent a lot of time researching this too!)
