To not believe toaster reviews when they don't fit a tidy slice of bread

OK my toaster has a nasty habit of fusing my electrics when I use it so looking for a replacement. Having to online shop for one because of CV as my 3 year old cannot function without spaghetti hoops on toast at least 3 times a week.

All the pictures show the toaster with that bloody half inch of bread sticking out the top as if they're proud of it! We all want evenly toasted top to bottom toast! Who is asking for toast that has a half inch top and bottom of undercooked crunchiness?

Please tell me that you can buy a four slice toaster that toast an entire slice (Tesco toasties thick cut loaf) at once without me having to keep flipping and turning it for about £50? I'm not asking the earth surely

We just use the grill.

I just toasted four slices of a large loaf and four slices of a smaller fruity one for the family, in one go, evenly. I suppose you have to turn them half way through though.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 11/04/2020 11:16

We just toast bread under the grill. Can do six slices at once that way.

Soconfusedandlost · 11/04/2020 15:01

I do like toasting using the grill but I have a 1 year old and 3 year old who follow me room to room so it needs to be a toaster that I can put out of arms reach.

Does anyone remember when cookers had a grill on the hood part instead of in the oven. I miss those

Toasters made in China are often designed for European processed bread which is smaller and thinner.

Soconfusedandlost · 11/04/2020 22:43

I like the asda one that PP linked to as holy grail of toasters. The reviews seem good.

Goddamn coronavirus - stopping me taking my toast template to shops like the God-given odd bod I so obviously am. (Sarcasm as I'm aware how horrendous life is for many at moment and do not wish to offend/upset anyone)

skippi we have that one and op we also have an ancient oven with the eye level grill (preens)

Soconfusedandlost · 11/04/2020 22:57

@owlinatree firstly you lucky bastard with your grill top oven. I'll sell you my kids so I can have one of them.id feel so fancy doing cheese on toast at eye level instead of doubling over like I'm holding onto the world's biggest fart.

Also I had to read your name twice as I first read it as first name Owlina surname Tree. Lockdown is causing lots of problems here

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies I would live a hotel toaster. If be fat and happy with an endless stream of toast - first slice let it go cold. Second slice strawberry jam, third slice cheese spread. Back to slice number 1 to put on salted butter. Slice number 4 Nutella. Slice 5 back to jam but blackcurrant this time. Slice 6 salted butter and sweet carb-filled death

OwlinaTree · 11/04/2020 23:02

Op Grin I love your toasty plans. Mine would be salted butter and thick cut orange marmalade.

babasaclover · 11/04/2020 23:05

And this is why I love mums night, Saturday night can't leave the house can't sleep and now I'm researching toasters thinking I need a new one 🤣

AntiHop · 11/04/2020 23:09

You need one of these.

We use ours daily. Toast, toasted sandwiches, burgers, grill vegetables...it's very versatile.

Soconfusedandlost · 11/04/2020 23:28

@antihop is it not just a George foreman grill by another name? I've got one of them but it bloody ruins potato smiley faces. They come out like cardboardy Donald Trumps

SlinkyDogg · 11/04/2020 23:33

Tesco do (or did) an own brand one which fits most bread slices.

k1233 · 12/04/2020 00:31

I've got this delonghi. Makes the best toast. I thought all toasters were the same, but no, this makes the outside crunchy while not drying out the bread. Yum! Comes in a 4 slice as well.

I have ordered the asda holy grill. I have hidden a jar of blackcurrant jam for its arrival. As its non essential delivery could be up to 29th April which isn't too bad I think. Is it weird I am super excited for a new toaster?

SingingWaffleDoggy · 14/04/2020 21:46

The Asda one is indeed the holy grail of toasters. You won’t be lost and confused once you have that beast in your kitchen. Setting number three, with proper salty buttery butter (Lidl do one with sea salt crystals)..... mmmmm.....

Eminybob · 14/04/2020 21:59

I have this one I can just about squeeze a slice into each slot on their sides so I’m able to fully toast 4 slices at a time.

Mascotte · 14/04/2020 22:03

@SingingWaffleDoggy oh... now I’m craving the salty butter. Now on my list!

Soconfusedandlost · 15/04/2020 15:47

I love that we've moved onto butter recommendations. This is my kind of life

OP posts:
MoltoAgitato · 15/04/2020 15:51

Soconfused was holy grill intentional or a perfect typo?Grin

Grill here so no toaster fails, unless I forget about it an burns stuff.

Dilbertian · 15/04/2020 16:07

I'm going to Lidl in a few minutes...

squiglet111 · 15/04/2020 16:20

I also hate this problem! Who wants that top bit untoasted! Useless!

Also recommend Asda own brand. I get the 4 slice toaster. Have to still put bread in side ways, but no squshing needed.

Parmavioletgin1 · 15/04/2020 17:01

I miss my last but one toaster ( I think it was a £25 Morrison's 4 slicer , it had a bagel setting that would only toast the one side of the bagel, I can't seem to find another one anywhere 🙁

RandomLondoner · 15/04/2020 17:39

There's been threads on this before. The answer it to get a supermarket own brand one. (Just double-check the size to make sure.)

Any name-brand toaster, e.g. Philips, will be too small, because they're made for the world market, and apparently UK bread is bigger than standard.

Presumably supermarket own-brand ones are custom-made for the UK supermarket.

Soconfusedandlost · 15/04/2020 19:33

So American style applies to fridge - freezers and toaster can be UK style 😂
