Warning. Shows distressing pictures of injury.
www.itv.com/news/granada/2020-04-10/man-bit-greater-manchester-police-officer-as-she-tried-to-explain-lockdown-rules-to-him/
"A man is due before magistrates in Manchester tomorrow [April 11] charged with biting a police officer who was trying to explain the coronavirus lockdown rules to him.

Police were called to Drake Street at around 6.40pm on Thursday (April 9) to reports of a man causing a disturbance.

The officers attempted to explain to him that in line with government guidelines around Covid-19, people shouldn’t be going around to other people’s homes."

AIBU to want him locked up for a very long time?

Well it depends whether he had capacity to be responsible for his behaviour, I suppose, OP. If he has special needs or a mental illness then no, he shouldn’t be locked up.
If he is deemed criminally responsible and is convicted, then he gets whatever the standard penalty is for whatever he is charged with - presumably assaulting a police officer or actual bodily harm. There is only a certain amount of leeway for judges in sentencing - they can’t “ throw away the key” just to make an example of him.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 10/04/2020 21:20

If he has special needs or a mental illness then no, he shouldn’t be locked up.

So, how would you propose to prevent him from doing it again tomorrow? He needs detaining, whether that be via arrest, sectioning or some other available route.

HollowTalk · 10/04/2020 21:23

Anyone who bites another person should be locked up, no matter what problems they have.

PicsInRed · 10/04/2020 21:25

We'll all be that guy in a few weeks.

😂

JackiFazaki · 10/04/2020 21:25

I see your point Babdoc, I did assume he had capacity. Just shocked at the injury.
I think if he did not have capacity, and is capable of inflicting injuries like this, then I agree with NiceLegs.

I think it said on the news that he was of no fixed abode? If hes homeless than the covid 350 regs do not apply to him.

BramwellBrown · 10/04/2020 21:44

Ouch, poor woman, that is quite some bite! Even in normal times he'd deserve to be locked up for punching and biting officers but at the moment they should throw the book at him, it's bad enough officers are having to put themselves at risk to explain the rules to people, its not just the injury itself, its the worry that poor officer must now have, because what if he is ill or a carrier?

ragged · 10/04/2020 21:45

wow, almost 2% of visits to US EDs are for human bites.
I can't see a specific UK statistic. I wonder which nationals bite each other most often.

It's not a new problem. Even without a pandemic it must be very worrying to be bitten by a nutter... The type of person who bites police officers is often the last person you would want to bite you. Stab wounds from junkie's needles even worse, and this is also a hazard police officers face.

SteongMama1989 what a helpful contribution. Hmm

Are you 13? Did they confiscate your cider? The big meanies.

Oxyiz · 10/04/2020 22:23

Seriously, I wish anyone with that attitude was deprived of all emergency services forever. Fucking assholes.

R1R2 · 10/04/2020 22:24

Baton in the teeth for anyone who trys it should be deterrent enough

user1473878824 · 10/04/2020 22:24

@StrongMama1989 urgh

magicfarawaytrees · 10/04/2020 22:30

Fuck the police? So if you or someone you loved were being attacked or your house was being robbed then you wouldn’t ring them?

Course you wouldn’t Wink

In answer to the OP it's absolutely awful. I hope the PC is ok :(

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2020 22:42

Why is it often assumed that these things are caused by mental illness, is no one just wicked anymore. There seems to be an excuse made for everything these days. We’ve all got our demons
I imagine she’ll need to be tested for CV.

Rosebel · 10/04/2020 22:47

Disgusting. Even if he has got special needs he needs,to be removed from the streets surely? I feel sorry for the police, They are doing an awful job with the risk of being attacked anyway. Now they risk being infected and attacked at the same time. Also one of the key workers that are rarely praised for the job they do.

managedmis · 10/04/2020 22:48

Take him out and flog him

ludothedog · 10/04/2020 22:51

Police and emergency services including health are assaulted all the time and unfortunately the courts don"t seem to deal with them seriously. They won"t get prison time for that.

Jellybean27 · 10/04/2020 22:52

Urgh. Thank god he didn’t have a full set of teeth (by the looks of it)

YANBU

Samtsirch · 10/04/2020 22:54

@Babdoc
This.
@managedmis
Not this.

managedmis · 10/04/2020 23:19

I'll sleep easy tonight now I know that, Sam

RightOnTheEdge · 10/04/2020 23:27

I saw this earlier for some reason it made me feel a bit tearful I don't know why I'm not usually like that.

It's just so awful and I think they said she was out giving out Easter eggs to children a few days before and that bite is terrible!

Andromeida59 · 10/04/2020 23:35

He was also arrested for domestic violence, it wasn't just for biting the officer. I'm sorry for the officer but I do worry what injuries will have been inflicted on his partner if he can do that to a Police Officer.
