Warning. Shows distressing pictures of injury.
www.itv.com/news/granada/2020-04-10/man-bit-greater-manchester-police-officer-as-she-tried-to-explain-lockdown-rules-to-him/
"A man is due before magistrates in Manchester tomorrow [April 11] charged with biting a police officer who was trying to explain the coronavirus lockdown rules to him.

Police were called to Drake Street at around 6.40pm on Thursday (April 9) to reports of a man causing a disturbance.

The officers attempted to explain to him that in line with government guidelines around Covid-19, people shouldn’t be going around to other people’s homes."

AIBU to want him locked up for a very long time?

Sick of hearing “what if the person has mental health issues” it needs to be dealt with it’s disgusting & these people are a danger to the public

NearlyGranny · 10/04/2020 23:45

Whatever his issues, the rest of society needs protection from him, so some sort of personalised lockdown for him, please - one he doesn't need to have explained in order for him to comply. If not a cell, a locked ward.

I hope the PC is ok, human bites are terrible for germs in them.

Dieu · 10/04/2020 23:50

Bastard. He should be put down like a dog.

Mandatorymongoose · 11/04/2020 00:06

It's vile. He violently assaulted a 21 year old woman by biting her hard enough to break the skin. A woman who was just trying to do her job.

The courts often seem to consider assaults on emergency service workers / medical staff as an occupational hazard although they are supposed to be improving and taking it more seriously. Hopefully he will be sentenced appropriately.

IhateBoswell · 11/04/2020 00:15

Should have immediately smashed his teeth out.

HopefullyAnonymous · 11/04/2020 00:19

I’m a police officer. I’ve been assaulted on a few occasions (thankfully never bitten) but never by anyone where mental health issues have been the cause. Only ever by just deeply unpleasant people.

lemontreebird · 11/04/2020 00:27

Awful.
The police need better uniform.

Babdoc · 11/04/2020 08:26

In my original response to OP I simply stated that an offender needs to have capacity in order to be treated by normal court procedures.
I am not trying to excuse all criminals by claiming they have mental health problems or special needs - as a police officer PP pointed out, the vast majority do not, and are just violent, unpleasant people.
And if a patient’s mental health condition means they are a danger to the public, then they can be detained in an appropriate secure mental health establishment such as Carstairs.
It worries me to see some PPs wanting mob rule and a response of yet more violence- suggesting smashing his teeth with a truncheon, flogging him etc. This is not how a civilised democracy deals with crime.

Drugs?

missyB1 · 11/04/2020 08:33

He needed tasering- repeatedly.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 11/04/2020 08:38

f he has special needs or a mental illness then no, he shouldn’t be locked up.

That's not how its works.

If you are a danger to other people, mental capacity or not, you need to kept away from the general public.

How that takes places differs depending on wether you have capacity or not. Not wether you can be out in the general population.

If hes homeless than the covid 350 regs do not apply to him.

Also not quite true. He cant continue to visit other peoples houses.

OnlyaMan · 11/04/2020 20:22

A bite is a serious assault. A Police Officer is entitled to respond to it, even if he/she does not immediately know why the assault occurred. Police Officers (in these days) are well armed. The "Biter" will likely be badly hurt. He/she must later explain why she/he did what she did.
If he/she has no teeth left, that is not a "punishment"-it is what happens when you assault a Police Officer.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 11/04/2020 20:27

I canNOT believe anyone is attempting to be right-on about this. How totally ridiculous.
He definitely needs locking up, well away from society.

x2boys · 11/04/2020 20:38

That's a nasty bite ,I have been bitten by people with mental illness ,as a former mental health Nurse ,but it was when the patient was in a heightened state and under restraint it was,nt ime something that just happened Not sure what the perpetrator would be charged with ,Actual bodily harm?
