To use eggs a few days past their best before date...

A light hearted one!

My local supermarket hasn’t had eggs for weeks now. Managed to get some in village shop which are now 4 days past their best before date. I say absolutely fine to eat. Will put them in a bowl of water and do the sink test. Other half says no and went to bin them.

Surely 4 days after a best before date is absolutely fine and right now we can’t afford just to bin food!

Aibu to want to eat the eggs?

I am aware there are far more important things to worry about right now but with DS showing symptoms so we can’t go out and get anymore!

Put them in a bowl of cold water. If they float then they are off

NopeNotToday5 · 10/04/2020 11:15

I would use them.

TheFlis12345 · 10/04/2020 11:15

As long as they don’t float they will be fine. I have used eggs 2 weeks past their date before.

Doje · 10/04/2020 11:15

Absolutely fine!

Mrsmorton · 10/04/2020 11:16

Eggs last for ages. Crack them into a cup first if you're worried, you can't be mistaken if they're off... the smell is horrific.

Chemenger · 10/04/2020 11:16

I have never paid any attention to best before dates on eggs and I’ve never had any ill effects. Just use them. I’m sure I’ve used eggs weeks after their dates.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 10/04/2020 11:17

I used eggs that were 3 weeks past their due date. I had a few left but dh binned them I would have carried on using. I did the sink/float test :)

maddening · 10/04/2020 11:17

Another vote For the floating test

WickedlyPetite · 10/04/2020 11:17

I've used eggs weeks past their date.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 10/04/2020 11:17

I always eat eggs past the best before date. Probably 10 days/2 weeks after.

Elouera · 10/04/2020 11:17

I wouldn't even both putting them in water! I'd crack them in a cup individually, then use them in whatever you are doing. You will certainly know if its an off egg, not only by the vile, repulsive smell, but also by the grey-green colour it will be.

In 30+yrs of cooking, I've only encountered a rotten egg a few times, and there is no way you'd miss it!

BrieAndChilli · 10/04/2020 11:17

I agree, if the sink they are fine to use. Best before dates always err on the side of caution and as a society we throw way too much food away. We should trust our judgements, smell, look and feel to see if something has gone off.

PickAChew · 10/04/2020 11:18

It's best before, not use by.

Coulddowithanap · 10/04/2020 11:19

Nothing wrong with an out of date egg. You will know if it's off.

I've actually never had a gone off egg and have eaten them way past the date.

WhisperingJesse · 10/04/2020 11:19

Best before dates are guidance; use by dates are absolute.

Enb76 · 10/04/2020 11:23

Use by dates also have a massive margin. The milk I’m currently using is 2 days past its use by and is perfectly fine.

BelfryBat · 10/04/2020 11:23

Re the 'float' test, eggs that aren't off also float, you will know an egg is properly off because it doesn't just float, it practically sits on top of the water. I use eggs a month past their best before date, no problem, but I did once have a real floater like this, quite startling.

Marmite27 · 10/04/2020 11:24

Eggs last ages after their bb date.

Do the float test if you really feel you want to check.

We’re eating ones bb over a week ago, and will continue until they’ve gone.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 10/04/2020 11:25

I always do the floating test. If it lies on its side at the bottom it is fine. If it stands up but still touching the bottom, it is fine but not as fresh as those lying horizontally. If it it vertical and doesn't touch the bottom of the container then it shouldn't be used.

They can last several weeks past the 'Best before' date.

Scrowy · 10/04/2020 11:26

Our eggs don't have best before dates as they come from our own chickens. Somehow we manage.

Ninkanink · 10/04/2020 11:28

Eggs are fine up to a month after the day, quite easily. Especially if they’re stored in the fridge.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/04/2020 11:29

Just crack into a saucer first. If it smells OK it’s fine.

Eggs keep for ages past the best before date. I’ve used masses of well out of date ones and they’ve all been fine.

midnightstar66 · 10/04/2020 11:30

Ignore the date on eggs they are pretty meaningless. Just do the float sink test. If they hit the bottom then eat

BogRollBOGOF · 10/04/2020 11:30

Float test.

Best not to boil them if they get more vertical as the air bubble inside will explode and pop the egg.
Older eggs are good for mixiñg, scrambled, baking.

LittleBearPad · 10/04/2020 11:30

I never really look. 4 days is absolutely fine.
