To use eggs a few days past their best before date...

A light hearted one!

My local supermarket hasn’t had eggs for weeks now. Managed to get some in village shop which are now 4 days past their best before date. I say absolutely fine to eat. Will put them in a bowl of water and do the sink test. Other half says no and went to bin them.

Surely 4 days after a best before date is absolutely fine and right now we can’t afford just to bin food!

Aibu to want to eat the eggs?

I am aware there are far more important things to worry about right now but with DS showing symptoms so we can’t go out and get anymore!

Crack one in a cup, there will be no doubt if its good or not

I use them over 4 weeks past their date, I don't even bother with the float test I just crack them and see. In my 43 years I've only had 1 rotten one

Even eggs that float can still be ok. The air cavity gets larger as an egg ages. Doesn't mean it's off. Won't necessarily make the best poached egg but will be fine for scrambled, omelettes etc.

I found an egg in a flower pot that the fox had buried - it did not smell when it broke - it must have been there four months Grin

Yesterday I ate two eggs with a best before date of February 17th (poached on toast). They tasted fine and I’ve had no ill effects.

Yeah fine. You'll know when you crack it if it's off!

4 days over is not an issue for eggs. They will be fine. (I am assuming that you are going to cook them, I probably wouldn't use them for a recipe where they are eaten raw, such as mousse or mayonnaise).

If anyone is still having trouble finding eggs, for some reason M&S food hall always seems to have them, and they're good value too. £2 for a box of 15 or £1.50 for a box of 10.
