To think artex ceilings are not that bad

Better than seeing cracks and imperfections as long as it’s a sort of random design not too swirly !

I find it funny that they're not viewed as original features in the same way fireplaces and tiles can be.

Each artex ceiling will have been handmade and they last a long time looking good condition. They're not like the cheap thin brown doors houses of that age were built with and they've mostly been replaced by now.

I don't particularly love them, but they're not offensive either, I can't imagine bothering to take them out.

And I do wonder if one day they will be seen as original features to cherish.

AlexaCrowe · 10/04/2020 00:20

I don’t like or dislike them - I don’t think about any type ceiling really. I wouldn’t want to be the one doing it though, I can imagine it makes your arm a bit achey!

Redyoyo · 10/04/2020 00:21

As long as its not fans! We had that in our old house, finally got a plasterer to skim it but once it was painted you could still see the bloody fans waving at you!

Waveysnail · 10/04/2020 00:23

I dont mind them. Remember mum and dad having nearly every surface of out house artexed. Think theres only ceilings left now

Lardlizard · 10/04/2020 00:24

Broken leather pattern is not too bad imo

They collect dirt, are difficult to clean, and make rooms look smaller/ lower ceilinged IMO.

Covert20 · 10/04/2020 00:44

Isn’t it partly because they were often made with asbestos? So not really ideal...

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/04/2020 09:55

Artex has asbestos in it

NotSorry · 10/04/2020 10:00

My parents had it everywhere including walls - bloody awful when you’ve got the stipple on your bedroom wall and don’t get me started on the “fingers” effect - the people who bought their house must have hated them

AliasGrape · 10/04/2020 10:01

Finally got ours removed and skimmed in Feb, along with stripping the original vile anaglypta wallpaper (some are liveable, this was hideous) and skimming and painting all the walls. After 4 years living here, first time we could afford to do it though. We currently have no carpet down, no curtains or light fittings up, half the furniture still rammed in the kitchen (all refurb work having had to stop with lockdown) and I still prefer sitting in the lounge now to when it was in its original anaglypta and artex glory Grin

It just made the room seem smaller, darker and oppressive. Maybe it’s not so bad in different houses/ rooms but it was making me utterly miserable here.

funmummy48 · 10/04/2020 10:01

I don’t mind them but then again, I don’t mind anything much anymore. I shall be so happy to return to some sort of normality that crazy paving, fake stone cladding, bidets, bad haircuts, nylon clothing, clapped out cars, over stretched & see through leggings, poncy “artisan” food, ridiculous eyebrows, odd people and cheap, whit wine will all be welcomed with a smile 😃 I’m going to be Mrs Tolerant and laid back about “stuff” from now on! 😉

Pickupapenguinnnn · 10/04/2020 10:03

Horrific. I say this as I'm currently working through a house full of the stuff. 50% plastered 50% to go. There have been/are fans, swirls, bloody every pattern possible here.

My nan thinks it's gorgeous Grin

WouldShouldCould · 10/04/2020 10:12

I love them, genuinely think they add to character of 70/80s built houses. We have replastered the stairs at that had artex going up the wall which was painful and ugly but love the ceilings.

antwacky · 10/04/2020 10:24

Ive never minded the basic sort of stipple effect on ceilings but realised when we moved house recently that all of our ceilings are just plain plaster and I much prefer them.

A relative of OH bought a house that had the solar system in artex covering all of their living room ceiling, they loved it..

Murinae · 10/04/2020 10:26

We have had most of ours plastered over but still have broken leather on our bedroom ceiling which isn’t too bad. The fans were awful and the rooms looked so much lighter when they were gone.

Hingeandbracket · 10/04/2020 10:29

They are on a long list of things that are not worth the monetary and environmental costs of changing just for the sake of fashion.

This means I will probably never sell my house as I will be regarded as a deluded/cf seller for not having "refurbished" everything but that's OK as I have no current plans to move.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 10/04/2020 10:29

We have stipple ceilings and a wall of puffy paper. Small 80s ex housing association and cant afford to remove it. That and horrible doors!

Pipandmum · 10/04/2020 10:35

Hate it. And not many features from the 70s are worth keeping.
Ditto pebbledash.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 10/04/2020 10:44

I wonder if our children's generation will revive it all....

Thefaceofboe · 10/04/2020 10:53

We had one in our house when we moved in, was hideous and we ripped it down straight away.

Terralee · 10/04/2020 11:04

I'm looking at the artex ceiling of my 1980s house now... my dad painted it with a Matte white which makes it a bit less in your face I suppose.
If I had the money I'd have it skimmed my a plasterer.

To think artex ceilings are not that bad
DinoGreen · 10/04/2020 11:07

I grew up in a house with artex ceilings everywhere and used to lie in my top bunk, following the swirly patterns round the room when I couldn’t sleep. Never really thought about the fact that modern houses don’t have it - I liked it!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2020 11:11

Whoever decided to artex swirly stiff peaks on a kitchen ceiling though? That's silly surely? It collects grease. And dust.

To think artex ceilings are not that bad
Bluntness100 · 10/04/2020 11:14

Sorry I think they are ugly. I don’t think they will ever be considered an original feature worth saving.,
