...come the next election, and be willing to pay higher taxes if asked, or change the way they vote, in order to show support for the NHS? Just curious. (I will be, before anyone asks - but then I wasn't voting Tory in the first place.)

YABU = no, YANBU = yes

The NHS doesn't need more money, it just needs to stop wasting what it is already given.

Bloomburger · 09/04/2020 22:11

And you understand that the left would have been paying out hand over fist before Corona hit and then be left up shit creek without a pot to piss in to fund the furloughs and bail outs.

x2boys · 09/04/2020 22:13

Quite Bloom ,the NHS trust I worked for used to do ridiculous things like refurbish wards several times btw at the cost of nearly £1000000 and and then close those wards less than a,year later

wheresmymojo · 09/04/2020 22:13

Yes, because I don't vote Tory anyway.

Newyorkhereicome · 09/04/2020 22:16

Bloomburger the government is borrowing all this money, they don't actually have enough for this bailout

Moondust001 · 09/04/2020 22:18

How would you define feckless?
I'm sure that s/he meant all those middle class whingers who are now suddenly demanding higher rates of benefits and the abolition of the savings limits for means tested benefits... now that they need them. Because they deserve better.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 09/04/2020 22:21

Course they bloody won't!

OneForMeToo · 09/04/2020 22:21

The nhs is a bottomless pit. It needs reform and needs to be for needed not wanted things. But that’s not popular.

Bloomburger · 09/04/2020 22:21

newyorkhereicome yep I know that, we're deep in the shit but we'd be drowning in it if the Labour Party had been handing out cash hand over fist, nationalising industries because in their warped past they thought everything was run better under the government.

Balhammom · 09/04/2020 22:28

Would pay more in principle but I would have to be convinced that it would deliver value and have a meaningful impact on healthcare outcomes.

Equally, more money isn’t always the answer. The nhs model has been strained for some time so I think that major changes are probably overdue. Brits love the idea of the nhs but that in itself becomes a double edged sword. It is such a sacred cow that any attempt to make changes (even sensible ones) results in opposition/hostility.

Indeed, a lot of the harshest critics of the nhs system I know are doctors who work in it.

Samtsirch · 09/04/2020 22:35

@FedupwithCFs
Try not to be so hard on yourself 🤣

Fatted · 09/04/2020 22:35

I don't clap. The emergency services do not want a token gesture. They want support from the public all of the time, not just when it suits them in a crisis. They want the right tools to do the jobs they're being asked to do and they want the staff to do it. Clapping achieves nothing.

Balhammom · 09/04/2020 22:39

@Fatted

Apologies, hadn’t realised you were spokesperson for all emergency services everywhere.

(My OH, who works in nhs, disagrees)

FedupwithCFs · 09/04/2020 22:40

@Samtsirch

Why should I be hard on myself? The Government I voted for got in and handled this a lot better than a JC one.

LexMitior · 09/04/2020 22:46

Lots of people talk a good game. But Tories tend to regard any failure of the NHS as being down to staff. They rarely acknowledge their part in putting a market mechanism into it and huge numbers of managers. They drove it into debt which they just cancelled on a whim!

Never trust them with the NHS. They hate it; all these warm words about it now will melt away when we want to sell bits of it to the United States. It will be chipped away little by little, since they know most of the British public don’t want this.

FedupwithCFs · 09/04/2020 22:51

Oh shall we talk about my 5 year post appointments to check me up with the NHS post chemo?

See a nurse, she takes bloods, gives me the next appointment date which I duly note in my phone,

Then they Text me ... fine.

THEN they write to me! Fucks sake

FedupwithCFs · 09/04/2020 22:52

I did even ask for the letters to stop but apparently they couldn’t as any ex chemo patient would get them.

Fatted · 09/04/2020 22:54

@Balhammom that's fine. He's entitled to his opinion. Myself and my immediate family who are all in the emergency services don't agree.

Balhammom · 09/04/2020 22:55

While most of the public don’t want major changes to the nhs system, I wouldn’t trust “most of the public” to decide on how the manage a national level healthcare system.

I wouldn’t welcome a move towards the US system but if “privatisation” led us towards a German model, that may not be such a bad thing.

Mrsfrumble · 09/04/2020 22:57

I don’t get why clapping, not voting Tory and following guidelines are considered mutually exclusive either Confused

Still lots of clapping here tonight, but we are in the People’s Republic of Hackney where the Tory candidate only got about 10 % of the vote last time. Does that exempt us from all the weirdly presumptive accusations of hypocrisy?

CrocodileFondue · 09/04/2020 23:02

I am Feckless and I vote Conservative. As much as they are all wankers, they can't fuck the country up as much as a Labour government would. We are still recovering from the last one, what do you think all the Austerity was about?

LexMitior · 09/04/2020 23:08

If you think we aren’t about to hand much worse now then wake up! Austerity will look like a picnic. The Conservatives can’t spend what they don’t now have and have borrowed for the pandemic.

They spent more money on this than any time since 1945. The country is screwed for the next five years.

HeresMe · 09/04/2020 23:09

The NHS doesn't need more money, it just needs to stop wasting what it is already given.

It does need more, but before more is given the existing money needs managing correctly, millions is wasted in PFI projects, paying more than needed for equipment as has to come from a certain approved supplier.

This doesn't detract from the sterling job front line staff are doing though.

DeeCeeCherry · 09/04/2020 23:10

No. They'll continue to vote for a party that underfunds and undervalues the NHS, and coolly voted down a pay rise for nurses. They'll use the excuse that it's all Labour's fault when they were in power...oooh years ago now.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2020 23:12

How much more tax do you want me to pay - happy to cough up through tax every month from my wages, 2% ok ? And the money set aside for NHS only
