Neighbour spraying my weeds

Okay so I'm not a gardener and have tried and tried to keep my garden under some kind of control with the weeds but have never had the money to change it in the way of converting it to a concrete jungle to avoid the maintenance.
Upstairs is senior couple who keep theirs neat and unfortunately they look over onto my lovely garden and it's open at the side meaning that I have to go over onto theirs for access to my shed so I get that my garden is thrown in thier face pretty often.
However how would you feel if she came over into your garden spraying your weeds without asking.

Weedkiller is harmful to humans. And insects and bees.
They were on your property, doing things without your permission or consent.
Watch out - this could be the thin end of the wedge. We had a neighbour who did something like this once, then he took it further and further. We did not want him in our back garden poking around and interfering.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/04/2020 20:15

No such thing as weeds, just plants that people find inconvenient. I’d be well pissed off. Weed killers like round up should be banned (they almost were). If you don’t like them, get yourself down there and clear them out.

Khione · 09/04/2020 20:20

I think you are being unreasonable, they are trying to keep your weeds from encroaching on their garden.
Also, if because yours is so overgrown that you have to walk on their garden to get to your shed you are even more unreasonable.

You are trespassing on their garden but don't think they should weed kill on theirs. Not good.

To the pp with the bindweed. Try and untangle as much as you can without snapping it. Wrap it in kitchen roll and put it into a plastic carrier/bin bag then spray directly into the bag until the paper is thoroughly damp. all without snapping it (as far as possible). Do the same regularly with any new stuff that comes through. Keep spraying more weedkiller into the bag to keep it damp.

This way the plant has to absorb the weedkiller and take it down to the roots. A couple of years of doing that and it not only didn't come back on my garden but disappeared from next door too.

I’d ask them to stop as insecticides are ruinous to wildlife. No one should be using them. Tell them that your creating a wildflower meadow. Insects and wildlife need natural and uncultivated habitats.
If your patch is too overgrown for aesthetic reasons then just go out and pluck a few weeds every few days but I wouldn’t worry too much. Bees and other pollinators will thank you for it.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 09/04/2020 20:33

Our arsehole neighbours have done similar, even though there is a proper fence between the gardens with an unplanted strip.

DH likes to grow things organically and they know this. The big bramble they killed was just coming into fruit and DH had kept it for that reason. It was at the very corner of the garden away from their house.

They don't get any of our soft fruit or veg in the summer.

Wannabegreenfingers · 09/04/2020 20:38

Gardening needs to be done regularly. You cant do it once and expect it to not grow. My front lawn is a constant battle as the house at the top of my row never maintain their grass, it's full of weeds and they all blow down to mine. Mow your lawn every couple of weeks, it's not difficult and will help control the weeds.

Clappingforjoy · 09/04/2020 20:38

Khione no you have that wrong it's a communal walk through my shed is over thier side so my shed is in their garden.

OP posts:
Clappingforjoy · 09/04/2020 20:39

Also weeds are not on thier side and not anywhere near

Pidgythe2nd · 09/04/2020 20:39

I’d take it as a hint, and stop being so lazy and get outside and sort it.
Unless you’re growing triffids, nothing grows that quickly. You might find you lose weight too.

Clappingforjoy · 09/04/2020 20:42

I work fulltime in care so I dont count myself as lazy

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/04/2020 20:42

do they have a prized conifer or a standard rose or two you can chop down OP?

See how they like them apples.

JasonPollack · 09/04/2020 20:43

Weedkiller is foul. Weeds are food for pollinators.

Also I think manicured gardens look grim so I'd be raging.

Ginfordinner · 09/04/2020 20:45

Get a gardener

JasonPollack · 09/04/2020 20:48

Oh yes get a gardener! Why wouldn't everyone just get a gardener! And then go to a spa. Fantastic idea @Ginfordinner you've nailed it.

koshkatt · 09/04/2020 20:50

And also this. My garden is full of insects, birds, butterflies (although many fewer than there used to be) and other wildlife because I garden organically and would never spray that poison on to it.

Clappingforjoy · 09/04/2020 20:51

Yes it takes money I dont have I think mumsnett must have plenty of money

longtompot · 09/04/2020 20:53

I'd be very annoyed if my neighbour sprayed weed killer in my garden. I would try and go outside when they are and see if they can make some suggestions on how to get on top of your garden and then maintain it.

Sennetti · 09/04/2020 20:57

lots of weedkiller is now harmless due to the legislation changes due soon

QuizzlyBear · 09/04/2020 21:00

I thought this was a 'how kind are my neighbours' kind of post?!

Time40 · 09/04/2020 21:00

You could be onto a winner here, OP. If they love gardening, you might be able to persuade them to look after yours for you. I've got a neighbour who cuts my lawn for me, and in the past, at a different house, I had a neighbour who did my entire garden, beautifully - she enjoyed it, and I think it bothered her that mine was a mess.

MiddlesexGirl · 09/04/2020 21:02

No one is obliged to keep their garden tidy or weed free. No one has the right to spray weed killer on someone else's property.
OP if you're happy that your neighbours are killing your weeds and your wildlife then let them do it. If you ask them nicely they may even do the gardening for you too.
Otherwise tell them to stop. Or suggest alternatives if you want to keep them happy.

Twisique · 09/04/2020 21:07

Now would be a good time to do half an hour a day and grow some veg, might be glad of it if the lock down continues through the summer. Get some ideas from Pinterest or Gardeners World. Its fun! Daffodil

MitziK · 09/04/2020 21:13

I'd go ballistic. But that's because I go for wildlife friendly gardening - everything in there is there because birds, bees, butterflies, moths or other species rely upon it or because it fits the environmental conditions/enhances the provision in other ways (such as providing cover for nesting) or deterring intruders from coming over the wall.

A stripey lawn/desert surrounded by perfect blooms of no use to bees gardener would see it as untidy and uncared for. I see the Wrens nesting, the Great Tits picking off bugs, the Mason Bees emerging this morning and the Bumbles enjoying the Dandelions.

But, fortunately, my garden is surrounded by a ten foot wall, so I'm free of meddling gardeners.

It is very good for health, mobility and general wellbeing to get out there and do a bit of hacking back once a week, though - especially in terms of Vitamin D. Much healthier for the morbidly obese amongst us than staying indoors, whether at work or at home.

koshkatt · 09/04/2020 21:20

Great post MitziK

I weed a neighbours garden if I didn't they all seed and blow my way. There are 3 adults in the house and none of them pick the litter up or mow the grass, unsightly mess and the back garden looks like a jungle, they only moved in last summer
