We do have a second home in Ireland. We haven’t gone, but if I knew that lockdown was about to start I would have gone over prior for sure.

Tunnocks34 · 09/04/2020 10:26

Also, I’m not a wealthy second home owner. My nana died and left me a house in Ireland. We decided to keep it rather then sell as we have so many lovely memories there

Lardlizard · 09/04/2020 10:28

Sven they are not really extra visitors though when they own a home there
And I could well imagine Gordon would have taken loads of food supplies with him
Probably got one of them huge chest freezers too

No, because I'm from one of the areas that has a lot of second homes and caravan parks and I know how much our closest large hospital would struggle if the virus exploded there. People who are travelling to these areas for more outdoor space are utter selfish bastards. Then again, I already thought that before the pandemic, buying second homes prices out young local people trying to get on the property ladder anyway.

Lardlizard · 09/04/2020 10:30

We all knew lockdown was going to happen at least a week before it actually did though ?
Its not as if it was a shock announcement

RuggerHug · 09/04/2020 10:30

Wouldn't go and people here are being told if they did they have to stay there.

SarahInAccounts · 09/04/2020 10:31

The attitude of locals in some places has put us off ever having holidays there again. Threats issued for goodness sake. I hope the police act.

It's medieval in places. Torches and pitchforks.

If people were already there they are doing nothing wrong by remaining. They would be breaking the law travelling back.

Some really awful people live in beautiful places, sadly.

Lardlizard · 09/04/2020 10:31

“buying second homes prices out young local people trying to get on the property ladder anyway.“

Isn’t that just hard cheese though ?

I mean I can’t afford a house in west London but it’s tough luck

I think it is one of these things is we all just need to get on the best we can where we are.

If lockdowns were to become regular things, then we would re-arrange the tax base so that rural hospitals were better funded and we had more GPs (we are really short of GPs where I live). We would distribute the health care more evenly across the country.

If there were frequent lockdowns, the major super markets would be able to accommodate.

Since this is hopefully a one off, we all need to stay where we are counted.I live in a rural area, and most of the time time wished I lived closer to urban centres (I stay where I am for family reasons). Right now I am glad we are rural but I am worried about my dodgy hospital. I didn't even want to give birth there - it is grim on a normal day.

MouthBreathingRage · 09/04/2020 10:32

If you own a second home there, that's all you own. The locals will never think 'oh it's ok, hes practically one of us anyway'. You evidently don't know much about rural/small town mentally - you are not local unless you are born/live/die within a 10 miles radius your whole life.

Never did say the locals will accept you as one of their own, the village I grew up in was the same u less your born n bred there you are not local

All a bit Royston Vasey

There are plenty of holiday establishments available. Buying a small cottage so you and the dogs can visit four times a year, over a young couple who could live there, not have a huge commute, spend extra on rent is Selfish Bastard behaviour. I'd like to call it something else, but I'd definitely get banned.

Pipandmum · 09/04/2020 10:38

My second home is in London so no, even if it was allowed. I believe many people saw the lockdown coming and went to their second homes before the restrictions were put in place.

hellsbells99 · 09/04/2020 10:38

some friends of ours have split their family so 2 are living in their primary residence and 2 in their 2nd home (that they normally spend every weekend at and more). The 2 living in their primary home are both having to go out to work with one a front line NHS nurse, so by living separately they are trying to protect the rest of the family. I think they are right to do this. Another friend has also swapped houses with a close relative so the friend can live on her own (another nurse) whilst the close relative is living with the rest of the family.

DefConOne · 09/04/2020 10:39

I live in Devon. Our hospitals serve a very wide area with high a large elderly population. The ICU beds are all in the big cities, as they should be, but we just don’t have the infrastructure here. Local people want to protect the limited medical facilities for the permanent population. Plus limit the spreading of the virus by people moving around the country.

Lardlizard · 09/04/2020 10:40

Mouth, I just don’t get the entitled through process that some people in some areas have about how they should be Abel to buy a property in that area, if you can’t afford it you can’t afford it

It’s just the way this country is, capitalist country we live in

The well off have more and Get more

Maybe it’s Old fashioned jealously

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 09/04/2020 10:40

I’ve got one but have I gone to it, No I haven’t because I understand the country is in lockdown.

If we all make an effort to stick to the rules the lockdown will end sooner and then we can consider going away, seeing family etc

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/04/2020 10:41

Another viewpoint though is that the majority of young people want to move OUT of these places as there are no job opportunities. If second home owners didn’t buy homes in these places the value of all the locals homes would become drastically lower - would they be happy with that? If so, why don’t locals only sell to locals for a cheap price??
In the area where my second home is there were a number of affordable housing built for locals only to buy at a really cheap price. Three years later they are ALL still stood empty. Funny that!

MouthBreathingRage · 09/04/2020 10:44

@Lardlizard, locals can't afford to buy in their own area because of the effects of holiday homes. Have you ever heard of gentrification? It's nothing to do with jealousy, it's everything to do with young local people in rural/tourist areas being priced out of their own homegrown areas because some Londoner can't bare to leave a city, but obviously are entitled to own a little cottage in Wales or Cornwall for 'a bit of fresh air' and 'a place to host friends' a couple of times a year.

Sinuhe · 09/04/2020 10:45

I am seriously considering moving to my mansion with private park. It's better than my city flat without garden. I think just moving once in a closed car is ok.

Lardlizard · 09/04/2020 10:45

Good point Bette Davis

I doubt anyone trying to get on the property ladder could afford Gordon's or Kirstie's places...

See THIS^ is what the Second Home Shamers are really about. It has very little to do with local capacity.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/04/2020 10:51

My boss left his London flat with his family, including 3 kids to go back to their country house in Belgium. I understand his rationale, 3 kids in a flat for a month or longer would be hell.
If I had a bigger house with a tennis court, swimming pool and acres of land, hell yes I would have taken my kids there.
