Unreasonable and petty things that put you off a person

touchtheceiling · 08/04/2020 21:41

NC, penis beaker, wailing michaelangelo etc

Just wondered if anyone else can relate to this - I seem to be easily put off people due to very petty things in the scheme of things.

For example, last month I had to pick up a male colleague on the way to a work meeting. I had to go in his house to help carry some things, which meant going through his garden. He had washing on the line, including his pants. I don't know why but this made me lose respect for him and feel a bit embarrassed for seeing a colleague's pants (not sure if I was embarrassed for me or him). He didn't seem to notice though. He's in his late 50s and I really didn't want to see his pants under any circumstances!

Another was a guy I was seeing years ago. On one occasion he tried for a kiss and I wasn't expecting it, and seeing his lips pierced ready for a kiss when I was completely off guard just disgusted me. It put me off and I didn't see him again Confused

Once something like this has happened my view of them is tainted. Is this a known thing or am I just an unreasonable cow?

@crispysausagerolls Here in Korea, people carry the entire baby in a muslin when it's in a carrier. Everyone thinks I'm mad for having the baby's face on full display to the world.

Speaking of carriers, the term "baby wearing". Just say you're carrying the baby in a sling or whatever, baby wearing sounds grim.

crispysausagerolls · 11/04/2020 15:07

@loveislovely

That would drive me bonkers!!! I mean I also hate it when people have their babies face in the sun, oblivious to their discomfort - but what’s wrong with a nice hat or otherwise shielding them?!

PatriciaBateman · 11/04/2020 15:26

People visibly clocking how other people hold their cutlery. It's ten times worse if they comment on it, but a lot of people quietly cast their eyes up and down the table - lingering on the ones "not doing it right". They may not realise how obvious it is, but it is.

To me it just translates as small-minded meanness/snobbery, with a glee in petty rule-policing. Bonus points for making someone else look smaller.

I realise I'm clocking all this myself, but I don't go out of my way to deliberately do it, and I would never comment on it.

I tried to find my most unreasonable objection, but actually the more I think about it the less I think it is unreasonable!

No they don't. I've nver once sat down at a table full of people i don't know and thought 'I'll just do a quick once over to see who can't hold their cutlery properly.'

If people look it's because they've noticed, not because they are waiting for it. I agree it's very rude to comment on it, but you can't blame people for looking, especially the first time they see it.

My friend's DC are 13 and 15 years old , both intelligent kids, with no SNs or disabilities, no cultural issues, they've been using western style cutlery their whole lives. They can hold a pen and manage handwriting fine.

But they both hold their hold their fork in their fist like a spear and stab the food like they are spearing a fish in a river. Neither of them can manage a cutting action with a knife so the food gets sort of dragged apart while being nailed to the plate with by fork. Anyone would look.

hesgotit · 11/04/2020 16:03

Men wearing white socks!

LoveIsLovely · 11/04/2020 16:19

One of my friends holds her knife like a pen and her fork in a fist.

I'm not judging, just baffled. Also my mother would have gone mental if I'd done that.

I know it doesn't matter but it's hard to let stuff go when your parents have made a huge deal of it.

Exactly.

bobbikato · 11/04/2020 16:33

Sorry if been said, but posh men who put on a gangsa accent or jamacian patois .
Smoking outside doorways and completly ignore all the people trying to get into the public building .
Men with full bushy beards but wear posh suits, cufflinks, waistcoats - whats the point if they don't bother to shave .
People who are too precious to get their hands dirty ,but not fecking royal, usually wear a suit all the time so they can say " i would love to help, but ... "
Men who count the small change from the shop assistant,ie they buy something for 89p and and say " 11p that's right love " and think its funny .
People who put three types of sauce of their chips ie ketchup, mayo, bbq when not drunk .gross .
Men with those big gold rings of every finger -.
Men who collect sports signatures .

Fimofriend · 11/04/2020 16:45

people who are judgy Grin

LoveIsLovely · 11/04/2020 16:50

@fimofriend tbf basically everyone is judgy, some people just hide it better than others.

I just admit it, I'm a judgemental prick. But I try to judge behaviour and not the actual person.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 11/04/2020 17:51

I work in a shop now. An older chap comes in quite often and he seems very nice but I went right off him the day he went through my till with a Daily Mail in his basket. Yuk.

h3av3n · 11/04/2020 18:13

People who can't handle spicy food, it's unreasonable but I judge them

Wolfgirrl · 11/04/2020 19:08

People that call their kids the most pretentious names. A few of the worst offenders I have seen lately on here are Ottilie, Ptolomy, Ignatius and Beryl. Why?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/04/2020 19:15

Or names spelt incorrectly /tv characters/ princess type etc as they want to be unique. Never mind the child has to live with it and might want a serious career one day.

Ritascornershop · 11/04/2020 19:17

I like Ottilie, the ly sound at the end of a girls’ name is pretty common and I love names with O’s in them.

Mrskeats · 11/04/2020 19:22

I have many as I am old and fussy
When they can't use grammar correctly
Unadventurous eaters
People who look down on cultural things
People who aren't into learning anything new
Bad manners
Vanity
People who are overly obsessed with sport
People who scream when they see a dog
People who kill things for fun

Gwenhwyfar · 11/04/2020 19:22

"People who can't handle spicy food, it's unreasonable but I judge them"

I judge people who put spice in everything. If it was tasty to being with, you wouldn't need to drown it in hot spices.

Mrskeats · 11/04/2020 19:27

I forgot Daily Fail and S+n readers.
However that's not small or petty.

Bexyp45 · 11/04/2020 19:56

Friends/people wearing really strong perfume or aftershave. For some reason it sets something off in my brain and makes me really angry 😡. Noisy eaters, Bad breath. Please don't invite me to your house without making sure it's at least tidy and the loo is clean. The strange competitive feeling between groups in pubs/clubs.

EarlGreyT · 11/04/2020 20:33

People who talk about their political views aggressively, like they’re factually correct and think that anyone who disagrees with them is wrong. The reality is that people’s political views are largely a matter of opinion, not fact and so can’t be right or wrong.

EarlGreyT · 11/04/2020 20:35

@Wolfgirrl
I agree, ottilie is a horrible name, but seems to always be suggested on baby names thread.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/04/2020 21:32

The aftershave that one of my exes wore. It set off my morning sickness when he wore it (didn’t stop him) and still makes me gag now.. I’ve actually had to move away from people in queues because of it (pre CV of course).
Bad language in social media posts. I’ll often find I agree with the sentiment, but can’t bring myself to hit the like button..

PatriciaBateman · 11/04/2020 22:05

No they don't. I've nver once sat down at a table full of people i don't know and thought 'I'll just do a quick once over to see who can't hold their cutlery properly.'

Yes they do. Your sample of 1 (yourself) is not representative of the whole world. Neither is mine, but I am commenting on what I have observed. You not observing it does not mean it doesn't exist. Hmm

Octopus37 · 11/04/2020 22:21

When I was at school, I got put off a lad I fancied cause I didn’t like the elastic at the back of his trousers. I thought if he can’t even wear some decent trousers, forget it

Pickupapenguinnnn · 11/04/2020 22:24

Dry lips and skin
Women with obvious moustaches/hairy moles
Women who talk in baby voices
Chipped nail polish especially toes in open toed shoes
Men in extremely tight skinny jeans
Men with flat bums
Men with big bums
