Am I being over expectant or is this a lot of work and responsibility for the wage?

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 08/04/2020 20:31

Decided to have a look at jobs as I do every now and again, and came across this job in the full time section so presumably 37.5 to 40 hours per week.

Does this seem like a fair wage for the amount of work or not? Or am I out of touch?

For reference this job is based in Yorkshire.

It's a shit wage, yes.

Gwynfluff · 08/04/2020 20:35

I was fine in terms of receptionist duties but when it mentioned they’d do induction support, I thought it became a bit much.

But unfortunately I think wages have massively stalled and people maybe don’t realise

TwilightPeace · 08/04/2020 20:35

Bloody hell, yes! Avoid!!

Yerroblemom1923 · 08/04/2020 20:35

Sounds like a Receptionist job. Yes . The wage is rubbish.

Stronger76 · 08/04/2020 20:36

Is it term time only?

Michaelbaubles · 08/04/2020 20:37

It sounds like a receptionist + exams officer type job rolled into one. Too much for one person.

cherrybunx0 · 08/04/2020 20:38

I didn't even read all the responsibilities, lost my mind halfway down, but honestly probably not out of the ordinary money wise. most administrative jobs and office jobs, unless you're in the top positions of the company are shockingly paid. not gonna say my place of work but I've only gone up by about 2 grand in salary in over 5 years and in a senior role, I'm hovering around 20 grand and this is office based with a lot of responsibility and outside clients.

sad but true - most people dont get the pay they should for what they do

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 08/04/2020 20:39

Very typical of these admin jobs. 9 out of 10 times they are utterly shit, no chance for promotion, expected to deliver the moon on a stick, take the blame for everything that goes wrong, be a dogsbody for everyone and get called 'just the secretary' at every turn, and generally get treated like crap.

DonnaDarko · 08/04/2020 20:40

Oh my god, that job description is way too long. Avoid!

lokoho · 08/04/2020 20:45

Good grief! I want to think it's just overdescribed and actually they just want you to answer the phones, tidy up, and read the brochure so you know the business. But then in a trice we're at funding oversight and management reports.... Not so much assisting as just basically running this entire office for absolute buttons.

I sort of want to stage an intervention with whoever applies for this job! If you can do all this you can get something much better paid.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 08/04/2020 20:45

Yanbu. That's a pitiful salary for the level of responsibility. I honestly believe salaries have more or less stalled in the past 20 years for everyone in the £15,000 to £30,000 salary bracket.

Fairyliz · 08/04/2020 20:46

Sounds like a typical public sector job description. They have tried to make duties sound important and technical when it will probably just be adding information to a database, like doing your shopping list online.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 08/04/2020 20:47

ANYTIME it's a reception job but also includes a lot of admin on top of it, RUN. Those jobs it's always expected for one person to be superman/woman for peanuts and then they wonder why the position has such a high turnover. I had one like this and it was far less stressful to work on a till, where at least I only had to do the one thing, scan out the customers (with a few things relating to that but ostensibly only one task).

19lottie82 · 08/04/2020 20:49

If you’re over 25, NMW for 37 hours a week is £16,777 and they’re offering £16,500 - £17,500?! Yes, that’s shit. I’d expect this job to be £21k minimum

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 08/04/2020 20:50

At first I thought the wage wouldn't be too bad for an admin assistant job, but after reading through the vast list of responsibilities it sounds like so many jobs rolled into one.
The exams officer, the receptionist, the administrator, the office manager all rolled into one.
Plus your own car to work between two different sites quite a drive apart across a busy city centre traffic got me thinking is this the 'norm' or are they just taking the pee knowing there will be a few desperate people out there at the moment.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 08/04/2020 20:51

ANYTIME it's a reception job but also includes a lot of admin on top of it, RUN

100%

It’s always a company who undervalues the admin side of things and will expect the same person to sort teas and coffees, clean meeting rooms and other menial things as well.

Travis1 · 08/04/2020 20:52

Nah I’d run just on the job description. You know you’re going to have the piss ripped right out of you and probably a 50 hour week from the start

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 08/04/2020 20:53

It’s always a company who undervalues the admin side of things and will expect the same person to sort teas and coffees, clean meeting rooms and other menial things as well.

But still keep answering the phone. They get irritated when you have to forward the calls to do one of your other tasks and that you can't split yourself in two and do them both.

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 08/04/2020 20:53

Plus the requirement of an admin with 3 years experience and A-Levels is just absurd for that wage, which seems to be only scraping the minimum wage presuming the lower end covers minimum for 16 year olds and the 17,500 covers anyone over 25!

OP posts:
CatBatCat · 08/04/2020 20:56

The roles themselves sound more substantial than what they actually are and without knowing how many people they would expect to greet and administrate the induction and training for its a bit hard to say if it's too much. Either way, it's too low of a salary. I used to do similar for £21k

Oblomov20 · 08/04/2020 21:02

The job description is overkill. The wage is shit.

Yawnfest · 08/04/2020 21:02

Thay forgot to list -
Stick a brush up me arse and I'll sweep the floor for as well.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/04/2020 21:05

It sounds like a receptionist + exams officer type job rolled into one.

With a bit of attendance officer and course admin as well. Unless the place is tiny it sounds like a nightmare, either way it's nowhere near enough money for that role.

Khione · 08/04/2020 21:06

It's minimum wage for 36.39 hours

I'm retired but do a minimum wage job as relief.

I sit in a bus transporting children with special needs to school.

Sometimes it's a run with a child who can be a bit demanding - mostly it's a run chatting to 1 to 3 well behaved children. Often the opposite run with only the driver for company is more challenging. To me this job justifies minimum wage. There are responsibilities, safeguarding and occasional behavioural issues but the majority of the time it is pure supervision.

I used to work in different professional capacities and I wouldn't do the above job for less than £24k.

AmelieTaylor · 08/04/2020 21:07

I couldn't even be bothered wading through it. It's bloody clear why the need someone to sort things out. That's shit money, even just for the receptionist bit!
