Am I being over expectant or is this a lot of work and responsibility for the wage?

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 08/04/2020 20:31

Decided to have a look at jobs as I do every now and again, and came across this job in the full time section so presumably 37.5 to 40 hours per week.

Does this seem like a fair wage for the amount of work or not? Or am I out of touch?

For reference this job is based in Yorkshire.

Sounds like a clerical/secretarial/receptionist job which they've made a meal of in the job description. The salary is terrible though

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/04/2020 21:14

That salary is dreadful. I'm in a junior admin role, part time but my salary is just under £17k per annum in full time terms and I literally just do the most basic admin duties. I'm talking filing and stapling.

MellowBird85 · 08/04/2020 21:15

@Yawnfest

  • Thay forgot to list - Stick a brush up me arse and I'll sweep the floor for as well.*

DianaT1969 · 08/04/2020 21:20

They deserve to be called out on it. Who can afford to run a car and pay all rent/utilities/provide for a family on that?
We should all email them and say add £4k to it and stop insulting the unemployed!

managedmis · 08/04/2020 21:22

It's Reception and admin, but with accounts and PR thrown in to keep you on your toes.

So you're basically doing the job of 3 people.

managedmis · 08/04/2020 21:25

Reminds me of a job I had : they wanted me to process expense reports in Mandarin, take the tea towels home to wash at the end of the week and teach myself Photoshop. For about 18k. 40 hrs per week.

I got a new job.

managedmis · 08/04/2020 21:26

Ability to manage a significant workload

They're not shy

LilacTree1 · 08/04/2020 21:28

Salaries have been stagnating for years. It’s pretty terrible. I know they like to include everything that might be asked of you but yes, it’s a big ask.

No doubt they’ll moan about how hard it is to find someone good.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/04/2020 21:31

Crap wage but about right for the job and hours, the wages in the UK are a fucking disgrace.

Justanotherlurker · 08/04/2020 21:32

It's a basic role wanting a moon on a stick, nothing new, however it is obviously a smalll company so you can write off half the demands and responsibilities of as dealing with phone calls that are vaguely on point.

It's a starter job, we are in the 21st century and wanting a defining desk job to be specific is never going to happen

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 08/04/2020 21:38

It's not a starter job if they're requiring 3 years experience and someone with a driving license.

titchy · 08/04/2020 21:40

Presumably it's an FE college. In which case there is absolutely no money in FE whatsoever. The sector has been totally decimated and colleges are merging left right and centre to stay viable.

The role to be honest is fairly entry level, but unless you want a career in college or uni admin and can look at it as a stepping stone I'd avoid.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/04/2020 21:41

Don’t you think the majority of employers jump on the minimum wage when they could pay more? Is it greed or what? I often think of the NMW was £5 per hour then employers would offer this, it’s ridiculous that some folks are actually better off not working!

Inappropriatefemale · 08/04/2020 21:41

*if not of

MitziK · 08/04/2020 21:41

Learners = Term Time only contract in most cases.

Which means you can lop 20% off that salary before you even start.

Tanfastic · 08/04/2020 21:54

I gave up three quarters through It sounds a similar sort of job description to what I have but I earn a few grand more than that.

I agree it sounds like a FE position. I've looked at these type of jobs before at our local FE and been astonished at what they expect for the money.

heroineinahalfshell · 08/04/2020 22:06

I'm going to guess this role is at an adult education centre. The public adult ed sector is massively underfunded and staff therefore massively overworked. Private providers exploit students and staff. I did basically this exact role for the same pay, and it almost destroyed me, until I bailed to do further qualifications and I now earn 2x what I earned there.

DieSchottin93 · 08/04/2020 22:17

£16.5-17.5k salary yet they want 3+ years experience. Ridiculous. Would be just about acceptable for an entry level role but blimey, that list of tasks is ridiculous Confused

QueenOfWinterfell · 08/04/2020 22:26

Sounds like you’d be doing three peoples jobs for a really shit wage. Not sure how they expect you to be able to afford to run a car and pay all your bills on that! Bet it gets advertised at regular intervals because nobody puts up with it for long.
