To let you know how to wear gloves safely in a supermarket?

I have read some people saying that it felt a bit pointless to be wearing gloves in the supermarket, which touch the trolley then the food items, then the checkout desk etc. This is obviously a real concern because you could spread Coronavirus from the trolley to your food, then from checkout area to your food etc.

One option is to just use hand gel or wipes instead of gloves if you have them but here is a safe method if you are going to wear disposable gloves:

  1. Take three disposable gloves with you.
  2. Use glove no.1 to wipe the trolley clean then take it off as it may be contaminated with Covid-19 (it may not be!) from the trolley.
  3. Put glove no.2 on your dominant hand to push the trolley.
  4. Use your non-dominant bare hand to pick up food items (this avoids spreading germs from the trolley-glove to the food)
  5. At the checkout; remove your 'trolley glove'; apply hand gel or use a wipe then pack your bags.
  6. Then put glove no. 3 on to pay (as card machine may be contaminated) and to push the trolley one handed. At the car, take off your final glove.
  7. Apply hand gel or wipes after putting bags in the car.

It's been discussed endlessly that hand sanitiser isn't the miracle some think it is.
Yes but with a high alcohol content it does render the virus inactive till you can get to a sink.
We dont all have access to water and soap and towels multiple times a day.

Anyone who has done proper barrier nursing to contain or avoid infection will be laughing at all this fannying about wearing gloves in Tesco.

I tend to avoid supermarket loos at the best of times, it would be the last place I'd want to go to wash my hands at the moment.

Rather take my chances with my high alcohol level hand sanitiser until I can get home to wash my hands.

I wore gloves today to shop. I sprayed trolley handle with dettol spray, then using gloves, pushed trolley round shop, putting food in trolley, then used gloves to pay. Got to car, put shopping in boot. Took gloves off. De-sanitused hands. Drove home. Quite simple really. Washed handes when walking in house. Put shopping away washed hands again. Not washing shopping.

I guess it depends which supermarket you frequent toilet wise. I agree some can be grotty. But if you really want to wash your hands with soap immediately then they are there.

But you can just wash your hands when you get home too and that's fine.

It's really fascinating to see that people actually think gloves will protect them somehow. The only way you will get infected from your hands, is if you touch your face. So go about your shopping, don't touch your face, and then wash your hands. Please don't use gloves, it's unnecessary, wasteful, and will likely create a shortage for people who actually need them, like healthcare workers.

I'm wearing gloves I found at the back of my cupboard, that I bought years ago, no healthcare worker needs the ones I've got!!

So i take my trolley to the toilet with me before i leave then push the same trolley ro my car? The ssme trolley which us by now probably not clean as i have bern picking things off the shelves that others have picked up and put down.
Or i take my shopping put it in the car then queue for 20 minutes, go back into the supermarket full of people just to go wash my hands?

I will stick to anti- bac for the few minutes it takes me to get home.

TabbyMumz...I more meant that even if only a small percentage of the population who normally don't buy gloves, now go out and buy some gloves, it will create a shortage eventually.

I don't think you are allowed to take the trolley to the toilet with you TBH, there's usually somewhere to put it. As I said this is just if you really feel the need to wash your hands there and then.
Otherwise just wash your hands when you get home and don't touch your face.

Actually, a blow torch is what you need. A quick blast of the trolley and then intermittent purification of the contents every few aisles.

@SharonaCorona, well actually yes I do have a condition but that's beside the point. I was trying to help people who already wear gloves to shop! The method I suggested reduces cross-contamination to an extent and more so than either just wearing one set of gloves to touch everything OR just waiting until home to wash hands (as keys, steering wheel, car door are handled in between OR phone, wallet etc.).

There are people at both extremes- some people are over the top with hygiene like me, some people are less concerned and then some people have no concept of hygiene and are unwittingly spreading Covid around.
