To let you know how to wear gloves safely in a supermarket?

I have read some people saying that it felt a bit pointless to be wearing gloves in the supermarket, which touch the trolley then the food items, then the checkout desk etc. This is obviously a real concern because you could spread Coronavirus from the trolley to your food, then from checkout area to your food etc.

One option is to just use hand gel or wipes instead of gloves if you have them but here is a safe method if you are going to wear disposable gloves:

  1. Take three disposable gloves with you.
  2. Use glove no.1 to wipe the trolley clean then take it off as it may be contaminated with Covid-19 (it may not be!) from the trolley.
  3. Put glove no.2 on your dominant hand to push the trolley.
  4. Use your non-dominant bare hand to pick up food items (this avoids spreading germs from the trolley-glove to the food)
  5. At the checkout; remove your 'trolley glove'; apply hand gel or use a wipe then pack your bags.
  6. Then put glove no. 3 on to pay (as card machine may be contaminated) and to push the trolley one handed. At the car, take off your final glove.
  7. Apply hand gel or wipes after putting bags in the car.

I just anti bac, use trolly cleaning area, pack shopping then mild bleach wash everything once home and wash the bags.

Never seen a more inappropriate use of the word ‘just’

Grin 😂😂😂

Then when I do get home I leave the food in the garage overnight, or longer if not needed straight away.

The garage spiders then wipe there willlies on it all then 😂.

BunnytheBee · 08/04/2020 22:41

Forgot to mention, I obviously had a shower and changed my clothes after I had cleaned my shopping with a soap and bleach solution

BunnytheBee · 08/04/2020 22:42

No that only happens to your washing if you leave it on the line overnight 😬

HeresMe · 08/04/2020 22:43

Whatever you do wear gloves ordon't but if you do throw them in a bloody bin not on floor that's scummy behaviour.

HeresMe · 08/04/2020 22:45

Have you seen garage spiders they are usually huge, they will want to mark their territory and that shopping is theirs now 😂.

Mmm. All this time taken while there are people queuing outside?

I was behind a woman in Asda earlier this week at the trolley self-service checkout. She only had a shallow trolley rather than a full-sized one and not all that many items, but I simply could not believe just how long she took. Her daughter (about 9 or 10yo) was helping her, so goodness knows how long she'd have been on her own. Both were wearing disposable gloves but no masks.

Because of the social distancing, you had to commit to one queue and couldn't switch easily and I made a very bad choice. The next till along had three people with trollies go through it whilst I was waiting - including a father with a baby in a car seat to contend with.

I genuinely felt like even Rowan Atkinson's character in Love Actually ("It is the work of a moment, Sir!") would have shouted at her to get a move on!

You poor innocent souls, it's not clothes or food spiders wipe their willies on..

I'm terrified of the virus jumping from anything I look at in the supermarket along my line of vision, so I always make sure I scour my eyeballs with wire wool soaked in acetone once I get back home. Thankfully, I haven't seen any signs of having caught it that way just yet. Well, truth be told, I can't really see anything now; and my word, does it sting.

oobedobe · 08/04/2020 23:06

I just returned from the shops and saw so many people have started using gloves to 'protect' themselves, but then they are using their phone touching the screen or putting it up to her face or getting their wallet keys out etc with the gloves still on!

Also using the gloved (germy?) hand to move their mask up and down their face.

It all seemed pointless to me - just wash your hands regularly and take a bit of hand sanitizer to use on hands after shopping.

shinynewapple2020 · 08/04/2020 23:17

@stophuggingme

Bananas - buy the ones in a bag - discard bag

Eggs - discard cardboard box and put eggs in fridge

Frozen food - I wipe the packaging same as chilled food

Are people really still buying bakery breads??

@Isitweekendyet quarantining food - anything that comes in tins, packets, bottles etc and doesn't need to be put in fridge / freezer I put in shed for a few days as virus only lasts on packaging I think up to 3 days. Saves wiping over things

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 08/04/2020 23:40

@furforksake

Thank you 🙏❤️🤣😂😂

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 08/04/2020 23:41

Shiny plastic l can be 9 days at least...

Skeeter2020 · 08/04/2020 23:43

Ridiculous advice. Just wash your hands before and after

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 08/04/2020 23:47

Op im braving the supermarket tomorrow in gloves and glasses. Goggles...

I'm going to be treating everything I touch as contaminated from the get go.

I'll wear gloves, touch trolly handle. Touch food I need pay with gloves...

Then I'll get to car, unload with gloves dump trolly, remove gloves.

Douse hands with anti bacterial gel.
Also keys, touched with the gloves.

Home. Wash hands. Fresh gloves, unpack, decanter... Then wash etc

Yeah that was the point of my post really- if you change gloves a few times and use sanitiser then you're not spreading the virus from one item/object to another.

I'm glad this thread has descended into the 'spider-willy' thread as I was regretting my post!

I will end this thread now if that's okay.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. This was only really meant to help people who are already wearing gloves and worried about spreading germs from one object/item to another. It's not official advice obviously and it's probably not even worth wearing gloves unless you remove them surgically (i.e. from the wrist) so other people suggesting we just use hand gel are probably right!

Hercwasonaroll · 09/04/2020 00:05

Personally I go shopping and wash my hands afterwards.

To make sure the food is safe, I set fire to it all.... Not killed me yet.

Isla727 · 09/04/2020 00:06

Oh by the way the 'from the wrist' was if you're wearing one glove so your other hand is clean. If you're removing two gloves you pull the fingers from one, tuck them under and then pull the wrist off the other so that you never touch the outside of the gloves.

If you've cleaned the trolley handle why do you then need a glove on the hand that's pushing the trolley?

HyacynthBucket · 09/04/2020 00:23

I don't get how wiping the trolley handle with a glove is going to clean it or make any difference to viruses on it.

Isla727 · 09/04/2020 00:29

@HopelessLayout- sorry I meant that you would wipe it with a glove on, but using a wipe. The reason for then removing that glove is because it may have become contaminated from wiping the trolley.

I was only trying to help really but understand that we all do things differently!
