To wish Rishi Sunak was Prime Minister

He just seems more in touch.

I am sick of the hard right in politics. Out of all the remaining members of the Cabinet, while BJ is in hospital, Rishi Sunak seems to be the most admirable MP.

AIBU?

flirtygirl I entirely agree that no Tory should ever be PM.

Really?! I think he looks bloody terrified every time he has to speak, like he’s found himself in a job that he wasn’t expecting to get.

FullOfCake · 08/04/2020 18:34

I agree op. I'm not a tory fan but I think he comes across fantastic atm. He gets my vote next time around

hesgotit · 08/04/2020 18:38

@PaquitaVariation in fairness he probably bloody has! Can you imagine being him, first a budget within a month and now this!

Rummikub · 08/04/2020 18:39

I think all potential PMs should have to live for 6 months on a low income without access to their contacts. Like a reality check internship.
I looked at Rishi's voting record on equality/human rights that a pp posted; I'm disappointed. But in these current times on balance I still prefer him over any of the other Tories.

bellinisurge · 08/04/2020 18:39

If you want no Tory to ever be Prime Minister maybe a functioning Labour Party like the one Starmer is trying to claw back would have been a good idea.

ilovesooty · 08/04/2020 18:40

He called Johnson his friend. It will be interesting to see how that plans out in the future.

ilovesooty · 08/04/2020 18:41

Are you in his constituency @FullOfCake ?

WeMarchOn · 08/04/2020 18:42

Rishi is a Southampton supporter so he is no 1 in my books 💪🏻 🤣

Theduchessstill · 08/04/2020 18:42

Oh my this is so predictable. Every time politician makes a half decent speech or manages to sound like they have paid attention when briefed and might have a clue what is going on, someone will start a thread saying they wish the person was the PM! I've seen it with Nicola Sturgeon, JRM, Rory Stewart, Mhairi Black.... anyone really.

Sunak has been in front line politics for 5 minutes. We have absolutely no idea whether he would be a decent PM (for a Tory). Yes, he's on top of his brief and comes across well, but is that really how low we're setting the bar? I know the most recent PMs have been pretty dire, but we should still aim higher. Not Pritti Patel is hardly the most ringing endorsement is it?

And I wouldn't be so sure his package is all his own work or represents his political leanings. They HAD to offer something pretty drastic - other countries were and even right-wing Tories would know having people starving in their homes will come back and bite you.

He's obviously highly ambitious - was wheeled out during the election to trot out the 'Get Brexit done' line time and again, and did so with aplomb. Just like Rory Stewart had been doing a few months before with whatever the line was when he was being loyal to May. Sunak - prettty ghastly really and if ever a Labour MP shows that level of ambition they are roasted for it. Tory MP manages to sound half-human and it's all 'Oh lovely posh voice - if only he was PM!'

^This 100%. The only reason Johnson won such a resounding victory at the last general election was that a lot of former Labour supporters preferred to have him than Corbin as PM.

Mittens030869 · 08/04/2020 18:45

But yes, I agree that Rishi comes across well.

MrsNettle · 08/04/2020 18:46

@CherryBakebadly Thank you for a brilliant link. I'm ashamed to admit that although I'm not a Tory supporter, he was beginning to win me over. However, your link shows his absolutely dreadful voting record!
He might be a more polished speaker than Boris and his package in the times of global crisis is good but we should not overlook what he stands for.

SimonJT · 08/04/2020 18:46

If you like him check his voting record, you’ll soon change your mind.

It shouldn’t matter if someone is a good public speaker, or wears a smart suit, but sadly it’s often valued more than the persons beliefs, voting record etc.

Yet to persuade my boyfriend that he isn’t hot Hmm

notangelinajolie · 08/04/2020 18:48

Our Prime Minister is in intensive care fighting for his life FFS.
Disgusting thread. YABVVU.

GCAcademic · 08/04/2020 18:50

Everyone loves him at the moment as he is throwing the cash around.

Let's wait and see how popular he is after we've been through a couple of years of the consequences of having to pay it back.

GCAcademic · 08/04/2020 18:54

No Tory should be pm ever

You don't think a political party which wins a general election should be in power?

flirtygirl · 08/04/2020 19:10

Yes I don't think the Tories should exist.

They only won because of "first past the post" which is a unfair way in a so-called democracy but has not been changed as it suits those who seek power.

I often dream about a world where parties that stand for things like the Tories and the Republicans did not exist. Hey a girl can dream....

GCAcademic · 08/04/2020 19:16

I find that scary, tbh. It's one thing (and quite reasonable) to have a problem with our electoral system. But to say that a mainstream party shouldn't exist is indicative of totalitarian tendencies. And I say that as someone who has never voted Tory.

LockdownLonely · 08/04/2020 19:17

It’s very easy to give away other people’s money.

Hingeandbracket · 08/04/2020 19:33

He is a nasty piece of work - which will become more obvious when this is all over.

Randomnessembraced · 08/04/2020 19:35

This man is young (40), intelligent and for a politician, relatively attractive. His parents are middle class emigrant Indians? GP and pharmacist? He married into an Indian billionaire family? So he is well connected and well educated and worked in the City of London for a while and went to Winchester College, Oxford (did the usual PPE degree) and then Stanford. On the face of it, he is like most successful City "boys". He can speak well and has an excellent education and perhaps some more empathy due to his background. However, to say he should run the country at 40 is a bit of a leap. He looks to be like lots of other successful men his age. He needs more political experience. I don't know much about him, but I assume if you marry into a billionaire family, then you can give up your City job and join politics which is comparatively underpaid but more prestigious.

Hippofrog · 08/04/2020 19:37

I’m sure he will be the PM one day

Scout2016 · 08/04/2020 20:02

Today he announced money for charities. Charities who have volunteers that help people flee domestic abuse, and make homeless people safe, or help disabled people. Such organisations are fantastic and necessary, and we would be lost without them, because the Government doesn't do anywhere near enough to provide these services. We shouldn't be dependent on charities for these things they should be provided and he and his Government should be embarrassed that we are so reliant on the voluntary sector and charities. Not proud to be giving them handouts.

JustinMyJustin · 08/04/2020 20:09

@CherryBakebadly Whenever I start thinking any Tory MP seems an okay person I check that site. It always helps me regain my sanity!
