To wish Rishi Sunak was Prime Minister

He just seems more in touch.

I am sick of the hard right in politics. Out of all the remaining members of the Cabinet, while BJ is in hospital, Rishi Sunak seems to be the most admirable MP.

AIBU?

Okay sadpapercourtesan. I shall be interested to see what ensues too.

He’s far too amateur to be PM. In 10 years? Maybe.

Tellmetruth4 · 08/04/2020 17:44

Slick marketing and good speaking skills. Completely untested. You need to do more than just give away money to be an effective PM.

They must have zero confidence in Patel though. She’s the Home Secretary, one of the most important posts. You’d think she’d be very publicly involved but they’re clearly sidelining her for fear of the damage she would do. I can imagine the markets going into free fall as soon as she opened her mouth.

ilovesooty · 08/04/2020 17:45

I think sadpapercourtesan is right. We will certainly see him behaving very differently once recession hits.

TheMustressMhor · 08/04/2020 17:49

I too am deeply suspicious of Patel.

The Party (I imagine) are also concerned about what she is likely to say.

He is posh boy from a top school. Been the whole way, Oxford, Ivy League, Goldman Sachs. Understands the money and can talk the talk but make no mistake he is not a socialist Tory. Prob nicer than Reese Mogg tho

meditrina · 08/04/2020 17:54

I think he is doing very well at the moment, when right in the centre of a dreadful storm when he's only been in the job for about 5 minutes.

Yes, we need to see more of him over time, but right now he looks good

Much of what is being announced now must have come in the main from officials. It's be 30 (?) years before the release of official papers and we get to see what work he commissioned and what options he was choosing from

Genevieva · 08/04/2020 17:56

He is a new MP but has an incredibly high profile role. He is basically Boris Johnson's right hand man.

I think the whole Brexit debacle caused people to think that Johnson's political instincts are different form what they actually are. He is a self-confessed One Nation Tory. He likes big government spending and investment. This puts him at the left of the Conservative party spectrum. Since he took over the people at the far right of the Tory spectrum like Mogg have been sidelined. Rishi's announcements on support during this crisis would not have been made without the PM's support, as he has the final say. I think they are both One Nation Tories.

Rishi is also young, so he could well be our PM at some point. He certainly communicates well and has a thoughtful approach that fills the listener with confidence.

Lllot5 · 08/04/2020 17:57

I like him. Speaks well answers every question ( you might not like the answer) future prime minister definitely.

Umnoway · 08/04/2020 17:58

I think Keir Starmer will be next PM.

QuaffthisKindNepenthe · 08/04/2020 17:58

Is there a Tory bumhole that Mumsnet will not lick?

Troels · 08/04/2020 18:04

I think he will be one day

Whatsername177 · 08/04/2020 18:06

What are you basing it on?

'He speaks well and seems nice' isnt enough.

He does speak well, he does seem nice. But there needs to be more than popularity to make someone good PM material.

Rummikub · 08/04/2020 18:07

I like him. I'm not a Tory in any way. He does come across as genuine. JRM, Raab, IDS, etc wouldn't have been able to deliver the economic support package in the same way I don't think. He answers questions directly. Post covid I think there'll be measures that may hit self employed, but I'm not entirely against that. I like his message and if he turns out to be a typical tory hard liner I will be gutted!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 08/04/2020 18:12

Some people are easily impressed. Probably explains why the UK has been a political soap opera for the last 5 years.

Ostanovka · 08/04/2020 18:13

I thought he spoke well in the briefing tonight. Clear, checked he'd answered questions properly, authoritative but approachable.

TheMustressMhor · 08/04/2020 18:15

@GhostofFrankGrimes

You may be right.

Anyone saying they are going to spend lots of money tends to be impressive.

Exoffice · 08/04/2020 18:17

I thought Priti Patel was next?

I think Corona is going to people's heads Grin

ilovesooty · 08/04/2020 18:17

I don't think he's any more genuine than any other member of government. He's just the type to impress the electorate though. And I suspect he might be pretty ambitious as he's come a long way in a very short time.

CherryBakebadly · 08/04/2020 18:21

Some people seem to think he’s in the wrong party. His voting record says otherwise: www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25428/rishi_sunak/richmond_%28yorks%29/votes

RunningNinja79 · 08/04/2020 18:21

I'm in his constituency. He seemed nice enough when he knocked on my door to promote himself in the November elections. Then again he was after votes.

BlueThursday · 08/04/2020 18:22

God you wouldn’t dare let Patel host a daily presser would you

QuaffthisKindNepenthe · 08/04/2020 18:22

I agree that people are easily impressed.

He called Boris his boss, ffs.

No, the British public are your boss, and don't you forget it, mate.

flirtygirl · 08/04/2020 18:23

No Tory should be pm ever.

Not unless they suddenly understand all sections of the society in which they preside over. Not all privilege breeds contempt but in the case of two many politicians, it seems to do so.

Until then no no and no.

None of them ever.
