Hi there! -My 18-year old son has recently expelled his last milk tooth i.e. left canine.

Is the normal?

Not unusual

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 06/04/2020 23:53

I was 30 when mine came out- no new tooth to push it out.

WorraLiberty · 06/04/2020 23:53

What has the dentist said about it?

I work with a 30 year old who still has a baby tooth.

user1473878824 · 06/04/2020 23:53

I think it is pretty unusual?! But not abnormal.

user1473878824 · 06/04/2020 23:53

@WorraLiberty my uncle in his sixties still has three milk teeth!

LovingLola · 06/04/2020 23:54

It’s a bit later than most kids but I’m sure it’s grand.

Bearfrills · 06/04/2020 23:54

Its unusual but not abnormal. DH is nearly 40 and still has one of his milk teeth left. The dentist said they usually pull them out past a certain age about that the adult tooth can come through but seeing as it was in good condition, wasn't doing any harm, and the adult tooth coming in now would cause more problems than it would solve she was happy to leave it where it was.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/04/2020 23:54

DS(15) has a milk tooth which is a canine, which doesn't have a corresponding adult tooth (discovered after routine x-ray). We are hoping he doesn't lose it

powershowerforanhour · 06/04/2020 23:55

Is there a permanent one under it? I'm missing a permanent premolar on either side of my lower jaw and the corresponding milk teeth took aaaaages to come out, in fact IIRC one of them had to be extracted.

1willgetthere · 06/04/2020 23:56

Google says baby teeth are usually gone by age 12.
I'm 40 and still have a baby tooth, but no adult tooth to push it out.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/04/2020 23:57

DH has a milk tooth. The tooth itself is well over 45, nevermind the rest of DH Grin

WeirdAndPissedOff · 06/04/2020 23:58

I still had a lot of mine at 16/17 - got the dentist to remove them when the orthodontist told me I couldn't have a brace until they fell out.
Ended up being too late to get braces without paying, though. Sad

But it's definitely not unusual.

Ronnie27 · 06/04/2020 23:59

I’ve still got one and I’m 35. Grin

Pastaforall · 07/04/2020 00:01

I had 4 taken out at 24 when I had my braces put on. If they hadn’t I think they’d still be there now.

RainMinusBow · 07/04/2020 00:10

I've still got one and I'm 39! Mind you, my mum and maternal grandad also had the milk tooth into adulthood in exactly the same place so it wasn't a surprise! Dentist says he's never known three generations where it has happened before. On xray there is not an adult tooth under it.

livingmyslothlife · 07/04/2020 00:11

I was 23. DS at 12 has still quite a few.

Whatsmyname26 · 07/04/2020 00:24

I’m 38 and still have baby teeth

TheSparklyPussycat · 07/04/2020 00:28

I had one that lasted to my thirties. More recently I had a mouth x-ray and the adult tooth is still up there, it never came through but it's there. Dentist called it an eye tooth.

Lumierecandle · 07/04/2020 00:33

I was twelve when I lost my lost baby tooth and seventeen my wisdom teeth fully grew through. We all develop differently!
My sister is in her twenties and still has a milk tooth because she never developed the adult tooth to replace it.

Tigerzmum · 07/04/2020 00:34

Thank you all; I'll tell him when he wakes up this morning: Smile; He was on HouseParty yesterday evening and his friends saw it in the camera and thought him still having a milk too was hilarious! Something to cheer them up following the sad news on the PM's health.

DH still had 2 milk teeth at 19 when I first started going out with him.
He had them removed by our dentist when he was 20.
He's 70 now and still has lovely teeth. Smile

@WorraLiberty my uncle in his sixties still has three milk teeth!

Seriously? Wow! Shock

Sixgeese · 07/04/2020 07:51

I was about that age when I lost the last of mine. It was a long time ago but I remember having a X ray to check there were adult teeth underneath. In my case there were.

My Mum lost her last baby tooth in her 70s, but she didn't have any adult teeth underneath.

Connie222 · 07/04/2020 07:53

I’m 40 and still have two a baby teeth. X rays show no new teeth underneath.

I didn’t start losing any teeth until I was 8 though - was still losing them and growing new ones at 16 - it was embarrassing!
