Is the normal?

I'm 38 and still have a milk tooth, no adult tooth behind it, dentist said it could fall out tomorrow or in 20 years time so it's up to me if I want it out and to have an implant. I'm happy to leave it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 07/04/2020 08:33

I'm 38 and have a baby tooth between my upper molars on the left side. No idea why he's still there - the dentist asks every now and then if I'd like him removed but I worry because I've never had a tooth out and perhaps he's just happy there.

Darcydashwood · 07/04/2020 08:46

I’m 42 and still have one canine milk tooth! Hoping it will stay there as long as possible as x rays show the adult one in in the wrong place so will never come through! I have 6 monthly check ups on it to check it isn’t getting loose! 🤷‍♀️

x2boys · 07/04/2020 08:53

Ds1_had lost all.his by 10 but the dentist said this was very unusual 12 /13 is more usual but I think it can vary massively .

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 07/04/2020 09:22

DH still has a baby tooth, which isn't causing problems. OTOH, DD2 had two baby molars which started sinking into her gum, and needed surgery to remove them (and then five years worth of braces - the last 18 months were because the orthodontists messed up though).

my2bundles · 07/04/2020 11:11

I still had one age 23 which was removed by the dentIst. My dd lost her last few age 18 and my DS had lost all his by age 9. It varies massively even in the same family.

JorisBonson · 07/04/2020 11:28

I went to school with a lad who's baby teeth never fell out, and his adult teeth grew in behind them. He looked like a shark.

Sexnotgender · 07/04/2020 11:32

I’ve still got 2 baby teeth. I’m nearly 38.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/04/2020 11:34

I lost my last milk tooth at the age of 50.

GreenTulips · 07/04/2020 11:51

Did you have adult teeth come in?
I’m the same age and have 2

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 07/04/2020 15:26

To lose a babytooth at 18 is unusual.

Where is the adult tooth? Is it through? If not he needs an xray to find out where it is when dentists are open.

Im suprised the dentist hasnt referred him to an orthodontist with a retained canine. Now at 18 he might not qualify for treatment.

Some people will hold onto baby teeth for their whole lives. And this is not a problem, it is usually due to a missing permenant tooth.

However if a baby tooth is there longer than it should be then you need to find out where the adult tooth is and plan accordingly, as an unerupted adult tooth can cause damage to other adult teeth if its in the wrong place. Or the baby tooth can fall out and leave a gap. He needs to visit a dentist and probably an orthodontist.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 07/04/2020 15:27

Obviously not urgent to visit the dentist! Can wait till they are open again!

easyandy101 · 07/04/2020 15:27

My mum didn't lose her last 2 until her 40s

DobbyLovesSocks · 07/04/2020 15:32

I had an x-ray when I joined a new dental practice 5-6 years ago. Apparently i still have a milk tooth in my gums. it will remain there as there is nothing to push it out (I have too many teeth anyway and as a teen needed canines removing and braces to allow a second set to come through and be straightened). Just one of those things

screwcovid19 · 07/04/2020 15:35

My dad had his last 2 baby teeth removed when he joined the army.

I had all of mine removed as part of my orthodontics around 14yo, otherwise I think I may have still had some as an adult. The dentist commented that my roots were very deep still.

screwcovid19 · 07/04/2020 15:38

Should add I had 10 teeth removed for my orthodontics although I think 2 of them were permanent teeth. So 8 baby teeth in my mid teens still.

myfav · 07/04/2020 15:40

It is unusual. He should have x rays to see whether there is an adult tooth that hasn't dropped down yet.

Tigerzmum · 08/04/2020 02:19

...my apologies, I failed to mention that the adult tooth had pushed the milk tooth out, and now appears to be currently, but slowly making its way, (from being the where the milk tooth had been), to align itself now with the other adult teeth. All does appear to be progressing well....

My 52 yo sibling has one. It’s not going anywhere.

groovergirl · 08/04/2020 05:27

I was 17 when I lost my last milk tooth. The tooth fairy didn't bother coming and my dentist thought I was lying! Sad

Warsawa31 · 08/04/2020 06:39

Most importantly will the tooth fairy still be interested ?

possumgoddess · 08/04/2020 07:27

I am 60 and I still have 2 (the top canines) as do all my children. Our family seem to have a genetic predisposition to hanging on to them.

dentydown · 08/04/2020 08:01

I lost my last one when I was 15 and the dentist pulled it out. I didn’t want it pulled, but was made to have it done. Took a year for the new one to come through.

My cousin got his pulled at 16 and it still had a root on it.

Tigerzmum · 08/04/2020 09:02

Most importantly will the tooth fairy still be interested ?

...considering it's destined to be an antique of a budding musician I'd suggest the tooth fairy not miss a good deal...
